This procedure covers the removal and replacement of a single shift solenoid in the 10R80 automatic transmission, requiring transmission pan removal and internal access.
Warnings
⚠Transmission fluid must be at operating temperature (150-170°F) for proper level check. Cold fill will result in overfill.
⚠The 10R80 transmission contains pressurized internal components. Do not attempt this repair immediately after vehicle operation.
ℹ️Identify which solenoid has failed using scan tool data before beginning work. Solenoid positions are labeled on the valve body.
⚠️Vehicle must be properly supported on jack stands. Never work under a vehicle supported only by a floor jack.

Parts
- Shift solenoid (identify specific solenoid before ordering) × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Transmission pan gasket × 1 — BC3Z-7A191-B or equivalent
- Transmission filter (recommended) × 1 — BC3Z-7A098-A or equivalent
- Transmission drain plug washer × 1 — Use OEM specification
Fluids
- Motorcraft MERCON LV ATF — 6.5 qt
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Place wheel chocks behind rear tires
- Allow transmission to cool to ambient temperature (minimum 2 hours after operation)
- Raise front of vehicle and support securely on jack stands at frame rails
- Verify correct replacement solenoid has been identified using diagnostic scan tool
- Gather all tools and parts within reach before beginning
Procedure
- 1Access transmission panPosition drain pan under transmission. The 10R80 pan is located toward the rear of the transmission. Remove any skid plates or underbody panels that restrict access to the transmission pan. On RWD F-150, clearance is typically adequate without removing crossmembers.
- 2Drain transmission fluidLocate the drain plug on the transmission pan (if equipped). Remove drain plug and allow fluid to drain completely into drain pan. If no drain plug is present, carefully loosen pan bolts starting at the rear edge, allowing one corner to drop and fluid to drain. Expect approximately 5-6 quarts to drain. Remove and discard drain plug washer.Torque specDrain Plug42 Nm (31 lb-ft)
- 3Remove transmission panRemove all transmission pan bolts in reverse criss-cross pattern. Support pan with one hand as final bolts are removed to prevent fluid spillage. Lower pan carefully and empty remaining fluid into drain pan. Inspect pan for excessive debris or metal shavings. Clean pan interior thoroughly with brake cleaner and shop towels.⚠Residual fluid will spill when pan is removed. Keep drain pan positioned to catch fluid.Torque specPan Bolts20 Nm (15 lb-ft)
- 4Remove transmission filterLocate the transmission filter attached to the valve body with multiple bolts. Remove filter mounting bolts and lower filter carefully. Note the filter orientation and any alignment dowels. Discard old filter and O-ring seals. Clean filter mounting surface on valve body with lint-free shop towels.
- 5Locate target solenoidWith filter removed, the valve body and solenoid pack are now visible. Solenoids are mounted to the valve body and identified by letter designations. Reference your diagnostic codes to identify the specific failed solenoid (typically SS-A through SS-E). The solenoid pack may have identification labels. Take a photo for reference before removal.
- 6Disconnect solenoid electrical connectorLocate the electrical connector attached to the target solenoid. Press the locking tab and carefully disconnect the connector. Inspect connector pins for corrosion or damage. Clean connector with electrical contact cleaner if necessary. Do not allow fluid to enter connector.
- 7Remove shift solenoidRemove the solenoid mounting bolt(s) securing the target solenoid to the valve body. Carefully extract the solenoid by pulling straight out to avoid damaging valve body bores. Note the orientation and any O-rings or seals on the solenoid body. Inspect the valve body bore for debris or scoring.⚠Do not drop solenoid bolts into transmission case. Use magnetic pickup tool if dropped.Torque specSensor Bolts14 Nm (10 lb-ft)
- 8Install new shift solenoidLubricate new solenoid O-rings with clean MERCON LV transmission fluid. Align solenoid with valve body bore and insert straight in, ensuring proper seating. Install solenoid mounting bolt and tighten to specification. Reconnect electrical connector until locking tab clicks into place.Torque specSensor Bolts14 Nm (10 lb-ft)
- 9Install transmission filterInstall new filter with new O-ring seals, ensuring proper alignment with dowel pins. Install filter mounting bolts and tighten evenly in criss-cross pattern to avoid cocking the filter. Verify filter is seated flush against valve body.
- 10Clean gasket surfacesRemove all old gasket material from transmission pan and transmission case mating surfaces using plastic scraper. Do not use metal scrapers that could damage aluminum surfaces. Clean both surfaces thoroughly with brake cleaner and wipe dry with lint-free towels. Surfaces must be completely clean and dry for proper gasket seal.
- 11Install transmission panPosition new gasket on transmission pan, aligning all bolt holes. If gasket has adhesive backing, ensure it is properly seated. Carefully raise pan into position, aligning gasket with transmission case. Start all pan bolts by hand to ensure proper thread engagement. Tighten bolts in criss-cross pattern from center outward to specification.⚠Over-tightening pan bolts will distort the pan and cause leaks. Use torque wrench and follow sequence.Torque specPan Bolts20 Nm (15 lb-ft)
- 12Install drain plug and refill transmissionInstall new drain plug washer and reinstall drain plug to specification. Lower vehicle to ground. Locate transmission fill plug on driver side of transmission case. Remove fill plug. Using fluid pump or funnel with extension tube, add approximately 5.5 quarts of MERCON LV transmission fluid through fill hole. Reinstall fill plug temporarily.Torque specDrain Plug42 Nm (31 lb-ft)Fill Plug42 Nm (31 lb-ft)
- 13Check fluid level and testStart engine and allow to idle. Shift transmission through all gear positions, pausing 3 seconds in each position. Return to Park. With engine running and transmission at operating temperature (150-170°F), remove fill plug. Fluid should drip slowly from fill hole. Add fluid in small increments if needed until proper level is achieved. Reinstall fill plug to specification.⚠Transmission must be at operating temperature for accurate fluid level check. Cold fluid level will be incorrect.Torque specFill Plug42 Nm (31 lb-ft)
- 14Clear codes and verify operationUsing scan tool, clear all transmission fault codes. Perform a test drive including all gear ranges. Monitor shift quality and scan tool live data to verify new solenoid is functioning correctly. Check for proper shift points and absence of harsh shifts or slipping.
Reassembly
- Install transmission pan with new gasket, torquing bolts in criss-cross pattern to avoid pan distortion
- Reinstall any underbody panels or skid plates removed during access
- Verify no tools or parts have been left in work area or transmission
Verification
- Check transmission pan and drain plug for leaks with vehicle running at operating temperature
- Verify transmission fluid level is correct at operating temperature using fill plug method
- Test drive vehicle and verify smooth shifting through all gears without slipping or harsh engagement
- Use scan tool to verify no transmission fault codes are present and solenoid operates correctly
- Monitor transmission for proper operation over next 50-100 miles and recheck fluid level
