Battery

This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the 12-volt battery on a 2015-2020 Ford F-150 with the 3.5L EcoBoost V6 engine.

• Group 65 or H6 battery (750-850 CCA recommended for EcoBoost) × 1 — Motorcraft BXT-65-850 or equivalent

Preparation

1. Ensure the vehicle is parked on level ground with the engine off and cooled
2. Turn off all electrical accessories and remove the key from the ignition
3. Open the hood and prop it securely
4. Locate the battery in the engine compartment on the driver's side

Procedure

1. 1

   Disconnect negative battery terminal
   Using a 10mm socket, loosen the negative (-) battery terminal bolt. Remove the cable from the battery post and position it away from the battery to prevent accidental contact. The negative terminal is marked with a minus sign and typically has a black cable.

   Disconnect positive battery terminal
   Using a 10mm socket, loosen the positive (+) battery terminal bolt. Remove the cable from the battery post. The positive terminal is marked with a plus sign and typically has a red cable or protective cover.

   Battery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)

   Remove battery hold-down bracket
   Locate the battery hold-down bracket at the base of the battery. Using a 13mm socket, remove the hold-down bolt securing the battery bracket. Lift the bracket off the battery and set aside.
   Torque spec

   Battery Hold-Down Bolt8 Nm (6 lb-ft)

   Remove battery from tray
   Carefully lift the battery straight up and out of the battery tray. Battery weighs approximately 40-50 pounds; use proper lifting technique. Inspect the battery tray for corrosion or debris.
   ⚠Battery is heavy; use both hands and proper lifting technique to avoid injury

   Clean battery tray and terminals
   Clean the battery tray of any corrosion or debris using a wire brush or battery terminal cleaner. Clean both battery cable terminals thoroughly to ensure good electrical contact. Neutralize any acid residue with a baking soda and water solution if necessary.
   ℹ️Wear gloves when cleaning battery corrosion; white or blue-green deposits may be acidic

   Install new battery
   Place the new battery into the battery tray, ensuring it is oriented correctly with the positive terminal matching the positive cable location. The battery should sit flush in the tray with no rocking or movement.
   ⚠Ensure battery orientation is correct before connecting terminals to avoid electrical damage

   Install battery hold-down bracket
   Position the battery hold-down bracket over the battery base. Install the hold-down bolt and tighten to specification using a torque wrench. Ensure the battery is secure and cannot move.

   Connect positive battery terminal
   Apply a thin layer of dielectric grease to the positive battery post if desired. Connect the positive (+) cable to the positive post and tighten the terminal bolt to specification. Do not overtighten as this can damage the battery post or terminal.

   Connect negative battery terminal
   Apply a thin layer of dielectric grease to the negative battery post if desired. Connect the negative (-) cable to the negative post and tighten the terminal bolt to specification. Do not overtighten. The connection is complete when the cable cannot be rotated on the post.

    Apply terminal protector
    Spray battery terminal protector on both terminals to prevent future corrosion, or apply a thin coat of dielectric grease over the terminal connections if terminal protector spray is not available.

Reassembly

1. No additional reassembly required for this procedure

Verification

• Turn the ignition to the ON position without starting the engine and verify all dashboard lights illuminate normally
• Start the engine and verify it cranks and starts normally without hesitation
• Check for any warning lights on the instrument cluster, particularly battery or charging system warnings
• Verify all electrical accessories function properly (radio, windows, lights, climate control)
• Check that battery terminals are tight and cannot be moved by hand
• Test drive the vehicle briefly to allow the PCM to relearn idle and transmission parameters; initial shifting may feel different until relearn is complete
