This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the radiator cap on a 2015-2020 Ford F-150 with the 3.5L EcoBoost V6 engine.

Warnings

⚠️Never open the radiator cap when the engine is hot. The cooling system is pressurized to 16 PSI and can spray boiling coolant, causing severe burns.
Allow the engine to cool completely before beginning this procedure, ideally for at least 2 hours after shutdown.

Tools required

Shop towel or ragEssential

Parts

  • Radiator cap × 1 — Motorcraft RS-546 or equivalent 16 PSI cap

Preparation

  1. Ensure the engine is completely cold to the touch
  2. Open the hood and secure it in the open position
  3. Locate the radiator cap on top of the radiator assembly at the front of the vehicle

Procedure

  1. 1
    Verify engine temperature
Touch the upper radiator hose with the back of your hand to confirm it is cool. If the hose is warm or hot, wait longer for the engine to cool completely.
  2. 2
    Remove the old radiator cap
Place a shop towel over the radiator cap. Press down firmly on the cap while turning counterclockwise to the first stop. Wait a few seconds to allow any residual pressure to escape, then press down again and continue turning counterclockwise to remove the cap completely.
  3. 3
    Inspect the radiator filler neck
Examine the radiator filler neck for cracks, damage, or corrosion on the sealing surface. Clean any debris from the neck using a clean shop towel. If damage is present, the radiator may need replacement.
  4. 4
    Check coolant level
With the cap removed, verify the coolant level is visible near the top of the radiator neck. If coolant is low, top off with Motorcraft Orange Coolant to the proper level before installing the new cap.
  5. 5
    Install the new radiator cap
Align the new radiator cap tabs with the slots on the radiator filler neck. Press down firmly and turn clockwise until the cap locks into place with a distinct click or stop. Ensure the cap is fully seated and locked.

Reassembly

  1. No reassembly required for this procedure

Verification

  • Verify the radiator cap is fully seated and locked by attempting to turn it further clockwise
  • Start the engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature while monitoring for coolant leaks around the cap
  • After the engine cools, recheck the radiator cap to ensure it remains properly seated
