- Motorcraft DOT 4 LV Brake Fluid — 0.5 qt
- Motorcraft Orange Coolant — 1 qt
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Allow engine to cool for at least 1 hour if recently operated
- Gather all tools, parts, and fluids before beginning
- Raise front of vehicle using floor jack and secure with jack stands under frame rails
- Remove front wheels if performing brake inspection (optional but recommended)
Procedure
- 1Drain engine oilPosition drain pan under oil pan. Locate oil drain plug on passenger side of oil pan. Using appropriate socket, loosen drain plug slowly and remove by hand once loose. Allow oil to drain completely for at least 10 minutes. Remove and discard old crush washer from drain plug. Install new crush washer on drain plug and reinstall plug.
- 2Replace engine oil filterLocate oil filter on driver side of engine block, positioned vertically. Use oil filter wrench to loosen filter (turn counterclockwise). Remove filter and allow remaining oil to drain. Wipe mounting surface clean with lint-free cloth. Apply thin film of fresh oil to new filter gasket. Install new filter hand-tight, then rotate an additional 3/4 turn. Do not use filter wrench for installation.
- 3Refill engine oilLower vehicle to ground. Remove oil filler cap on driver side valve cover. Using funnel, add 7 quarts of Motorcraft 0W-20 synthetic oil initially. Install filler cap, start engine and run for 2 minutes, then shut off. Wait 5 minutes for oil to settle. Check dipstick and add remaining oil to bring level between MIN and MAX marks. Final capacity is approximately 7.5 quarts including filter.
- 4Replace engine air filterOpen hood and locate air filter housing on driver side of engine bay. Release four spring clips securing air box cover. Lift cover and remove old air filter element. Clean any debris from housing using compressed air or damp cloth. Install new air filter with arrow pointing toward engine (direction of airflow). Secure cover and ensure all four clips are fully engaged.
- 5Replace cabin air filterOpen glove box and remove contents. Press inward on both sides of glove box to release stops and lower fully. Remove cabin air filter cover by pressing release tabs. Slide out old filter noting airflow direction arrow. Clean filter housing area if needed. Install new filter with airflow arrow pointing down toward floor. Reinstall cover and glove box stops.
- 6Inspect and replace spark plugsRemove eight individual ignition coils by disconnecting electrical connectors and removing mounting bolt from each coil. Pull coils straight up to remove. Use compressed air to clean around spark plug wells. Using spark plug socket with extension, remove all eight spark plugs. Inspect for wear, deposits, or damage. Gap new spark plugs to 0.051-0.057 inches (factory specification). Apply anti-seize compound sparingly to plug threads. Install plugs hand-tight, then torque to 15 Nm (11 lb-ft). Reinstall ignition coils.
- 7Inspect brake systemWith wheels removed, visually inspect brake pads through caliper opening. Front pads should have minimum 3mm friction material remaining. Inspect rotors for scoring, grooves, or excessive wear. Check brake hoses for cracks, bulging, or damage. Inspect caliper slide pins for proper lubrication and movement. If pads are below 4mm, replacement is recommended. Check brake fluid level in master cylinder reservoir under hood.
- 8Test and service cooling systemWith engine cold, locate coolant reservoir on passenger side of engine bay. Check coolant level against MIN/MAX marks on reservoir. Use coolant tester to verify freeze protection to at least -34°F (-37°C) and specific gravity of 1.080-1.085. Inspect all visible hoses for cracks, soft spots, or leaks. Check radiator cap seal and pressure rating (16 PSI). Top off with 50/50 mix of Motorcraft Orange coolant and distilled water if needed. Do not mix coolant types.⚠️Never open cooling system when hot. Pressurized coolant can cause severe burns.
- 9Inspect and top off brake fluidLocate brake fluid reservoir on driver side of master cylinder under hood. Clean area around cap before opening. Check fluid level - should be between MIN and MAX marks. Fluid should be clear to light amber. If dark or contaminated, full system flush is recommended. Top off only with Motorcraft DOT 4 LV brake fluid if needed. Do not overfill. Ensure cap is securely tightened.⚠Brake fluid damages paint. Wipe up any spills immediately with damp cloth.
- 10Inspect belts and hosesVisually inspect serpentine belt for cracks, fraying, glazing, or missing ribs. Belt should have consistent tension without excessive deflection. Check automatic tensioner for proper operation and bearing noise. Inspect all accessible coolant hoses, vacuum lines, and PCV hoses for cracks, hardening, or deterioration. Replace any questionable components.
- 11Check transmission fluid levelWith vehicle on level ground and engine at operating temperature, shift through all gear positions and return to Park. Engine must be running. Locate transmission dipstick at rear of engine bay near firewall on passenger side. Remove dipstick, wipe clean, reinsert fully, then remove and check level. Fluid should be in HOT range and bright red in color. Add Motorcraft MERCON LV ATF through dipstick tube if needed. Dark or burnt-smelling fluid indicates need for service.
- 12Inspect differential fluidRaise rear of vehicle and secure on jack stands. Locate differential fill plug on driver side of rear axle housing. Clean area around plug. Remove fill plug using appropriate socket. Fluid level should be at bottom of fill hole. If low, add Motorcraft 75W-140 synthetic gear oil until fluid reaches fill hole. Fluid should be translucent without metallic particles or burnt smell. Reinstall fill plug.
- 13Rotate tires and check pressureFollowing Ford's recommended rotation pattern for RWD F-150 (front to rear on same side, rear cross to opposite front), rotate all four tires. Inspect tires for uneven wear, damage, or objects embedded in tread. Check tread depth with gauge - minimum 2/32 inch, replace if at or below 4/32 inch. Inflate all tires including spare to specification on driver door jamb sticker (typically 35 PSI front and rear, but verify for specific model). Install wheels and torque lug nuts in star pattern.
- 14Perform final system checksLower vehicle completely to ground. Start engine and verify oil pressure light extinguishes within 2 seconds. Check for any fluid leaks under vehicle. Verify all dashboard warning lights are off. Test all exterior lights including headlights, turn signals, brake lights, and reverse lights. Check windshield washer operation and top off reservoir if needed. Test horn, wipers, and climate control system operation. Road test vehicle for 5-10 miles, checking for unusual noises, vibrations, or warning lights.
