This procedure replaces a faulty blend door actuator in the HVAC system to restore proper temperature control and eliminate clicking noises from the dashboard.

Warnings

Disconnecting the battery will erase radio presets and require clock reset
ℹ️Some 2015-2017 models may require removal of the glove box for better access
Do not force the blend door manually as this can damage the HVAC housing

Parts

  • Blend door actuator × 1 — Use OEM Ford part or equivalent HVAC actuator

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and turn off ignition
  2. Allow HVAC system to reach ambient temperature if recently operated
  3. Disconnect negative battery cable and wait 2 minutes for system capacitors to discharge
  4. Remove lower dash panel on passenger side by releasing trim clips
  5. Identify which blend door actuator has failed (temperature blend, mode door, or fresh air door) by listening for clicking noise location during HVAC operation before disconnection

Procedure

  1. 1
    Access the HVAC actuator area
With the lower passenger dash panel removed, use the flashlight to locate the blend door actuator on the HVAC housing. The temperature blend actuator is typically located on the driver side of the HVAC case, accessible from the passenger footwell. Remove any wire harness clips or brackets blocking access to the actuator mounting screws.
  2. 2
    Disconnect actuator electrical connector
Press the locking tab on the actuator electrical connector and carefully pull the connector straight off the actuator. Do not pull on the wires themselves. Note the connector orientation for reinstallation.
  3. 3
    Remove actuator mounting screws
Using the 7mm socket and extension, remove the three actuator mounting screws. The screws are typically positioned in a triangular pattern. Keep the screws organized as they are specific to this application. Support the actuator with one hand as you remove the final screw to prevent it from falling.
    Torque spec
    Actuator Screws3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
  4. 4
    Remove the failed actuator
Gently pull the actuator straight away from the HVAC case. The actuator shaft should disengage from the blend door arm. If resistance is felt, carefully rotate the actuator slightly while pulling. Do not force removal as this could damage the blend door linkage.
  5. 5
    Inspect blend door operation
With the actuator removed, use the flashlight to inspect the blend door shaft and linkage arm. Manually move the blend door arm through its full range of motion to verify smooth operation without binding. If the door binds or feels rough, debris may be present in the HVAC case requiring further disassembly.
The blend door should move smoothly through its full range; binding indicates a separate issue that must be addressed before installing the new actuator
  6. 6
    Prepare new actuator
Remove the new actuator from packaging and verify it matches the original part. Check that the actuator gear is in the neutral or mid-position. Do not manually force the actuator gear as this can damage the internal gears before installation.
  7. 7
    Install new actuator
Position the blend door arm to approximately mid-travel position. Align the new actuator shaft with the blend door linkage arm and carefully push the actuator into position on the HVAC case. The shaft should engage smoothly with the linkage. Ensure the actuator mounting surface is flush against the HVAC case before installing screws.
  8. 8
    Install actuator mounting screws
Thread in all three mounting screws by hand first to ensure proper alignment. Using the 7mm socket and torque wrench, tighten the screws in a star pattern to the specified torque. Do not overtighten as this can strip the plastic housing threads.
The HVAC case is plastic; overtightening can strip threads or crack the housing

  9. 9
    Reconnect electrical connector
Align the electrical connector with the actuator terminals, ensuring proper orientation. Push the connector firmly onto the actuator until the locking tab clicks into place. Gently pull on the connector to verify it is securely locked.
  10. 10
    Reinstall wire harness brackets
Reattach any wire harness clips or brackets that were removed for access. Ensure all wiring is routed away from moving components and sharp edges.
  11. 11
    Reconnect battery and initialize system
Reconnect the negative battery cable. Turn the ignition to the ON position without starting the engine. The HVAC system will perform a self-calibration cycle where you will hear the actuators moving through their full range. This process takes approximately 30-60 seconds. Do not interrupt this calibration.
  12. 12
    Test actuator operation
Start the engine and turn on the HVAC system. Cycle through all temperature settings from full cold to full hot, listening for smooth actuator operation without clicking or grinding. Test all airflow modes (defrost, floor, panel, etc.) to verify proper operation of all actuators.

Reassembly

  1. Reinstall the lower passenger dash panel by aligning trim clips and pressing firmly until all clips engage
  2. Verify all dash panels are secure with no gaps or loose sections
  3. Reset clock and radio presets as needed

Verification

  • With engine running and HVAC on, adjust temperature from minimum to maximum; air temperature should change smoothly from cold to hot
  • Listen for any clicking, grinding, or unusual noises from the dash area during temperature adjustment
  • Verify all airflow modes function correctly (defrost, floor, vent, bi-level)
  • Check that airflow direction changes appropriately when mode selector is adjusted
  • Confirm no air leaks are audible from behind the dash panel
  • Test driver and passenger side temperature controls independently if equipped with dual-zone climate control
