This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the instrument cluster in a 2015-2020 Ford F-150 with the 5.0L Coyote V8 engine, including dashboard trim removal and electrical disconnection.
Warnings
⚠Disconnecting the battery will erase radio presets and may require recalibration of power windows and other modules.
⚠Do not force trim panels or clips as they break easily. Use proper trim removal tools.
ℹ️The instrument cluster stores vehicle configuration data. Replacement clusters may require programming by a Ford dealer or with appropriate scan tool.

Parts
- Instrument cluster assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification or verified replacement
- Trim panel retaining clips (as needed) × 1 — Ford trim clips assortment
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Turn ignition off and remove key from vehicle
- Allow vehicle to sit for at least 5 minutes to allow airbag system to discharge
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait an additional 2 minutes before proceeding
- Adjust steering column to lowest and furthest extended position for access
Procedure
- 1Disconnect battery negative terminalUsing a 10mm socket, loosen the negative battery terminal bolt. Remove the negative cable from the battery post and secure it away from the battery to prevent accidental reconnection during the procedure.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 2Remove lower steering column coverLocate the two screws on the underside of the lower steering column cover. Remove these screws using a 7mm socket or appropriate driver. Gently pull the lower cover down and away from the column, releasing any retaining clips. Set the cover aside.Torque specCover Screws14 Nm (10 lb-ft)
- 3Remove upper steering column coverWith the lower cover removed, locate the upper steering column cover fasteners. Carefully release the retaining clips by gently prying with a trim tool at the seam between upper and lower halves. Lift the upper cover up and over the steering column, maneuvering around the ignition lock cylinder if necessary.
- 4Remove instrument cluster bezelUsing a trim panel removal tool, carefully pry around the perimeter of the instrument cluster bezel to release the retaining clips. Start at the bottom corners and work your way around. There are typically 8-10 clips holding the bezel in place. Once all clips are released, pull the bezel straight back toward the rear of the vehicle and set it aside.⚠The bezel plastic is fragile and clips can break if excessive force is applied. Work slowly and ensure each clip is fully released before pulling.
- 5Remove instrument cluster mounting screwsWith the bezel removed, you will see four 7mm screws securing the instrument cluster to the dashboard frame. These are located at the four corners of the cluster opening. Remove all four screws and retain them for reinstallation.Torque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 6Pull cluster forward and access connectorsCarefully pull the instrument cluster straight out toward the steering wheel approximately 3-4 inches. You will feel resistance from the electrical connectors on the rear. Use a flashlight to illuminate the back of the cluster and identify the connector locations.
- 7Disconnect electrical connectorsLocate the two main electrical connectors on the rear of the instrument cluster. Press the release tab on each connector while pulling the connector straight away from the cluster. There may be a smaller ground wire connector as well. Disconnect all electrical connections, noting their positions for reinstallation.⚠Do not pull on the wiring harnesses. Always grip the connector body and press the release tab to avoid damaging pins or the connector housing.
- 8Remove instrument cluster from vehicleWith all electrical connectors disconnected, carefully remove the instrument cluster from the dashboard opening. Maneuver it around the steering column and set it on a clean, soft surface with the face down to prevent scratching the lens.
- 9Install replacement instrument clusterPosition the new or replacement instrument cluster near the dashboard opening. Before inserting it, verify that all electrical connectors are accessible and in good condition. Carefully maneuver the cluster into the opening, routing it around the steering column.
- 10Reconnect electrical connectorsPush the instrument cluster partially into the opening, leaving enough room to access the rear connectors. Reconnect all electrical connectors to the rear of the cluster, ensuring each one clicks securely into place. Verify that the ground wire is properly connected if equipped. Gently tug on each connector to confirm proper engagement.
- 11Secure instrument cluster with mounting screwsPush the instrument cluster fully into the dashboard opening, ensuring it sits flush with the mounting surface. Install the four mounting screws at the corners and torque them to specification using a torque wrench. Do not over-torque as this can crack the cluster housing.Torque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 12Reinstall instrument cluster bezelPosition the instrument cluster bezel over the cluster and align it with the dashboard opening. Press firmly around the perimeter to engage all retaining clips. You should hear audible clicks as each clip seats properly. Verify the bezel is flush and evenly seated all around.
- 13Reinstall steering column coversPosition the upper steering column cover over the column and align the mounting tabs. Press down to engage any clips. Then position the lower cover and align it with the upper cover. Install the lower cover screws and torque to specification.Torque specCover Screws14 Nm (10 lb-ft)
- 14Reconnect battery and perform initializationReconnect the negative battery terminal and torque the terminal bolt to specification. Do not overtighten. Turn the ignition to the ON position without starting the engine and verify that the instrument cluster illuminates and performs its self-test sequence.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Ensure all trim panels are properly seated and all retaining clips are engaged
- Verify that no tools or parts have been left in the dashboard area
- Check that all dashboard screws and fasteners have been reinstalled and properly torqued
- Confirm the steering column covers are secure and do not interfere with column adjustment
Verification
- Turn ignition to ON position and verify all instrument cluster gauges sweep and illuminate properly
- Check that warning lights perform their bulb check sequence and extinguish appropriately
- Start the engine and verify that the tachometer, speedometer, and all other gauges function correctly
- Test all dashboard illumination levels with the dimmer switch
- Verify odometer reading matches previous cluster (or note new mileage if replacement requires programming)
- Check for any warning messages or diagnostic trouble codes using a scan tool
- Test drive the vehicle to confirm speedometer accuracy and proper gauge operation under various conditions
- If a new cluster was installed, verify it has been properly programmed with correct VIN and mileage by a dealer or qualified technician
