Replace engine oil and oil filter on the 2015-2020 Ford F-150 with 5.0L V8 Coyote engine using Motorcraft 0W-20 full synthetic oil.
Warnings
⚠️Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always use jack stands rated for the vehicle weight.
⚠Engine oil and components can be extremely hot. Allow engine to cool for at least 30 minutes before beginning work.
ℹ️The 5.0L Coyote engine uses a cartridge-type oil filter accessed from the top of the engine, not a traditional spin-on filter from underneath.

Parts
- Oil filter × 1 — Motorcraft FL-500S or equivalent
- Oil drain plug crush washer × 1 — Ford YN16-6734-AA or equivalent
Fluids
- Motorcraft 0W-20 Full Synthetic — 7.5 qt
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels
- Allow engine to cool if recently operated (minimum 30 minutes)
- Gather all tools, new filter, crush washer, and 7.5 quarts of Motorcraft 0W-20 synthetic oil
- Raise front of vehicle using floor jack at designated front jacking point
- Secure vehicle on jack stands placed at manufacturer-specified points on frame rails
- Lower jack slightly to transfer weight to stands, but leave jack in place as backup
Procedure
- 1Access the oil drain plugLocate the oil drain plug on the passenger side of the oil pan toward the rear. Position the drain pan underneath the drain plug, slightly offset toward the passenger side to catch the oil stream.
- 2Drain engine oilUsing a 16mm socket or wrench, loosen the drain plug slowly. Once loose, quickly remove it by hand, keeping inward pressure to prevent oil from flowing until the plug is clear. Allow oil to drain completely for at least 5 minutes. Oil flow will initially be strong, then slow to a drip.⚠Hot oil can cause severe burns. Keep hands and arms clear of the oil stream.
- 3Install drain plug with new crush washerRemove the old crush washer from the drain plug and discard. Install the new crush washer onto the drain plug. Clean the drain plug threads and oil pan sealing surface with a clean rag. Thread the drain plug in by hand to ensure proper thread engagement, then torque to specification.Torque specOil Drain Plug35 Nm (26 lb-ft)
- 4Locate the oil filter housingLower the vehicle carefully or work from the top. Open the hood and locate the oil filter housing on the driver side of the engine, near the front. It is a black plastic cap approximately 76mm in diameter with a hexagonal center section.
- 5Remove oil filter housing capPosition a rag around the base of the filter housing to catch residual oil. Using a 76mm oil filter cap wrench, turn the housing cap counterclockwise to remove. The cartridge filter will come out with the cap. Some oil will drain from the housing.
- 6Remove old filter cartridge and O-ringsPull the old filter cartridge from the cap. Inspect the cap and housing for two O-rings: one on the cap threads and one on the bottom of the cap. Remove both old O-rings and discard. Clean the cap threads and sealing surfaces thoroughly with a clean rag.
- 7Install new filter and O-ringsInstall the new O-rings provided with the new filter onto the cap (one on threads, one on bottom sealing surface). Lightly coat both O-rings with clean engine oil. Insert the new filter cartridge into the cap, ensuring it seats fully.
- 8Reinstall oil filter housing capCarefully thread the filter housing cap back into the engine block by hand, ensuring proper alignment to avoid cross-threading. Once hand-tight, use the filter wrench to tighten to specification.Torque specOil Filter Housing Cap25 Nm (18 lb-ft)
- 9Fill engine with new oilLocate the oil filler cap on the driver side valve cover marked with an oil can symbol. Remove the cap and insert a funnel. Pour in 7.0 quarts of Motorcraft 0W-20 synthetic oil initially. Wait 1 minute for oil to settle, then add remaining 0.5 quarts slowly while monitoring.
- 10Install oil filler cap and start engineInstall the oil filler cap and hand-tighten securely (do not overtighten). Start the engine and let it idle. Check the oil pressure gauge to confirm pressure builds within 5 seconds. Inspect underneath the vehicle for leaks at the drain plug. Inspect the filter housing for leaks. Let engine run for 1-2 minutes, then shut off.ℹ️Oil pressure light should extinguish within 1-2 seconds of starting. If it remains on, shut off engine immediately and investigate.
- 11Check oil levelWait 2-3 minutes for oil to drain back into the pan. Remove the dipstick (orange handle on passenger side of engine), wipe clean, fully reinsert, then remove and check level. Oil should be between the MIN and MAX marks. Add oil in small increments if needed to reach the MAX mark. Do not overfill.
Reassembly
- Ensure oil filler cap is securely tightened
- Confirm no tools or rags are left in engine bay
- If vehicle was raised, carefully raise with floor jack, remove jack stands, and lower vehicle to ground
- Remove wheel chocks
Verification
- Start engine and verify oil pressure gauge shows normal pressure immediately
- Inspect underneath vehicle for any oil leaks at drain plug and around oil pan
- Inspect oil filter housing area for any leaks around cap
- Verify oil level is at MAX mark on dipstick when engine is off and vehicle is level
- Reset oil life monitoring system using vehicle settings menu if equipped
- Record mileage and date of oil change for maintenance records
