Preparation

    Using ridge reamer, carefully remove carbon ridge at top of each cylinder bore. Do not cut into parent metal of cylinder wall. Clean metal shavings from bores immediately.
    Cover adjacent cylinders and crankshaft journals with shop towels to prevent debris contamination.

    Remove pistons and connecting rods
    Mark each connecting rod cap and rod with cylinder number (1-8) and orientation using permanent marker or stamps. Remove connecting rod bolts. Push piston and rod assembly out top of block. Install rod cap back onto rod immediately. Keep assemblies organized by cylinder number.
    ⚠️Connecting rods and caps must return to original cylinders in exact orientation. Mixing components will cause bearing failure and engine damage.

    Inspect and measure cylinder bores
    Clean cylinder bores with brake cleaner and lint-free towels. Measure each bore at top, middle, and bottom in two perpendicular directions using bore gauge. Record measurements. Check for taper, out-of-round, scoring, or glazing. Maximum taper: 0.002", maximum out-of-round: 0.002". Consult machine shop if measurements exceed specifications.
