Power Steering Reservoir

This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the power steering reservoir on a 2015-2020 Ford F-150 with the 5.0L V8 Coyote engine equipped with electric power steering.

Preparation

1. Verify that your vehicle actually has a hydraulic power steering reservoir rather than EPAS by checking for a pump and fluid lines at the front of the engine
2. If replacing washer reservoir: allow engine to cool to ambient temperature
3. Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
4. Open hood and secure with prop rod

Procedure

   Confirm Power Steering System Type
   Locate the area near the driver side firewall. The 5.0L V8 F-150 uses electric power steering (EPAS) with no hydraulic pump, reservoir, or fluid. If you see a translucent reservoir in this area, it contains windshield washer fluid, not power steering fluid. Verify your repair need before proceeding.

   Access Washer Fluid Reservoir (if applicable)
   If replacing the washer fluid reservoir: Remove the plastic engine cover by pulling upward on the front tabs, then lifting away from the engine. Set aside. The washer reservoir is located on the driver side of the engine bay near the fender.

   Drain Washer Fluid
   Disconnect the electrical connector from the washer pump by pressing the release tab and pulling away. Disconnect the washer hose from the pump outlet by squeezing the retaining clip and pulling the hose off. Allow fluid to drain into a suitable container or use a fluid transfer pump to remove fluid from the reservoir.

   Remove Reservoir Mounting Fasteners
   Remove the mounting bolts securing the washer reservoir to the fender well and inner fender. Typically 2-3 bolts secure the reservoir. Carefully note the position and orientation of any brackets or spacers.
   Torque spec

   Mounting Bolts34 Nm (25 lb-ft)

   Remove Reservoir Assembly
   Lift the reservoir up and out of the engine bay. Maneuver carefully to avoid spilling remaining fluid. Inspect the pump grommet and hose connections on the new reservoir to ensure they are properly installed before installation.

   Install New Reservoir
   Position the new washer reservoir into the mounting location, ensuring all tabs and alignment features are properly seated. Install mounting bolts and tighten to specification. Ensure the reservoir is secure and does not rattle.

   Mounting Bolts34 Nm (25 lb-ft)

   Connect Hoses and Electrical
   Reconnect the washer hose to the pump outlet, ensuring the retaining clip engages fully. Connect the electrical connector to the washer pump until it clicks into place. Verify the connection is secure by gently pulling on the connector.

   Refill and Test System
   Fill the washer reservoir with windshield washer fluid to the full mark (approximately 3.5 quarts). Start the vehicle and test the washer system by activating the windshield washers. Check for leaks at all connections and verify proper spray pattern on windshield.

Reassembly

1. Reinstall the plastic engine cover by aligning the rear tabs first, then pressing down on the front until all clips engage
2. Wipe down any spilled washer fluid from painted surfaces to prevent streaking
3. Close and secure the hood

Verification

• Verify washer reservoir is securely mounted with no movement or rattling
• Check that washer pump operates correctly and fluid sprays onto windshield at proper angle and volume
• Inspect all connections for leaks after operating the washer system several times
• Confirm fluid level remains stable after testing, indicating no leaks in the system
