Remove and replace the throttle body assembly on the 5.0L Coyote V8 engine, including air intake system components and electrical connections.
Warnings
⚠Allow engine to cool completely before starting work to avoid burns from hot components
⚠Do not spray throttle body cleaner into a hot engine or near ignition sources
ℹ️Disconnecting battery will reset PCM learned parameters; vehicle may idle roughly for first few drive cycles after repair
ℹ️Do not force throttle plate open manually as this may damage the electronic throttle control mechanism

Parts
- Throttle body assembly × 1 — Motorcraft CM5312 or equivalent
- Throttle body gasket × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Air intake hose clamps (if damaged) × 2 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Ensure engine is completely cool to the touch
- Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
- Disconnect negative battery cable using 10mm wrench and secure away from terminal
- Wait minimum 5 minutes for capacitors to discharge
- Locate throttle body on top of engine intake manifold, driver side
- Take photo of air intake routing for reference during reassembly
Procedure
- 1Remove Engine CoverGrasp engine cover firmly and pull upward to disengage rubber grommets from ball studs on valve covers. Set cover aside in clean area.
- 2Disconnect Air Intake AssemblyLoosen the clamp at the air filter housing outlet using flathead screwdriver. Loosen the clamp at the throttle body inlet. Disconnect crankcase ventilation hose from air intake tube by squeezing spring clamp and pulling hose free. Remove entire air intake tube by pulling away from throttle body and air filter housing.Torque specAir Intake Hose Clamps3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
- 3Disconnect Throttle Body Electrical ConnectorLocate electrical connector on right side of throttle body. Press down on red safety tab to unlock. Squeeze connector release tabs and pull connector straight off throttle body. Move wiring harness aside.
- 4Remove Throttle Body Mounting BoltsUsing 8mm socket and extension, remove the four throttle body mounting bolts in a crisscross pattern. Keep bolts organized for reinstallation. Note that bolts may be different lengths; mark positions if necessary.ℹ️Throttle body bolts may be 10.0 Nm or 16.0 Nm depending on model year - verify during removalTorque specThrottle Body Bolts10 Nm (7 lb-ft)
- 5Remove Throttle BodyCarefully pull throttle body away from intake manifold. Twist slightly if needed to break gasket seal. Remove and discard old throttle body gasket from intake manifold surface. Inspect throttle bore and plate for carbon buildup.
- 6Clean Mounting SurfacesUsing clean lint-free rag, thoroughly clean intake manifold mating surface. Remove all gasket material and debris. Spray brake cleaner on rag (not directly on manifold) and wipe surface until completely clean. Ensure no debris falls into intake manifold opening; stuff clean rag into opening temporarily if needed.⚠Do not allow debris or cleaning materials to enter intake manifold as this will cause engine damage
- 7Inspect and Clean New Throttle BodyRemove new throttle body from packaging. Verify gasket surfaces are clean. Do NOT open throttle plate manually. Check that electrical connector pins are straight and undamaged. If reusing old throttle body, clean bore and plate with throttle body cleaner and lint-free cloth.
- 8Install New Gasket and Throttle BodyPosition new throttle body gasket onto intake manifold, aligning all four bolt holes. Remove protective rag from intake if used. Carefully position new throttle body onto gasket, ensuring gasket remains aligned. Start all four mounting bolts by hand to ensure proper thread engagement.
- 9Torque Throttle Body BoltsUsing torque wrench, tighten throttle body bolts in crisscross pattern (top left, bottom right, top right, bottom left) to 10.0 Nm (7.4 lb-ft) for 2015-2017 models or 16.0 Nm (12.0 lb-ft) for 2018-2020 models. Make second pass in same pattern to verify all bolts reach specification.⚠Over-torquing throttle body bolts can crack throttle body housing or distort boreTorque specThrottle Body Bolts10 Nm (7 lb-ft)
- 10Reconnect Electrical ConnectorPush electrical connector onto throttle body until it clicks into place. Verify red safety tab engages properly. Gently tug on connector to confirm it is fully seated and locked.
- 11Reinstall Air Intake AssemblyPosition air intake tube onto throttle body inlet and air filter housing outlet. Ensure tube is fully seated on both connections. Reconnect crankcase ventilation hose to intake tube, ensuring spring clamp is properly seated. Tighten both hose clamps to 5.0 Nm (4.0 lb-ft) using torque wrench.Torque specAir Intake Hose Clamps3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
- 12Reinstall Engine Cover and Reconnect BatteryAlign engine cover grommets with ball studs on valve covers and press down firmly until cover snaps into place. Reconnect negative battery cable and tighten to specification using 10mm wrench.
Reassembly
- Double-check all hose clamps are tight and oriented correctly
- Verify electrical connector is fully locked with safety tab engaged
- Confirm engine cover is fully seated on all mounting points
- Ensure no tools or rags were left in engine bay
Verification
- Turn ignition to ON position without starting engine; verify check engine light illuminates then extinguishes (normal bulb check)
- Start engine and verify it idles smoothly without stalling after initial rough idle period
- Verify no air leaks around throttle body or intake connections by listening for hissing sounds
- Rev engine gently to 2000-3000 RPM and release; throttle should respond smoothly without hesitation
- Check for diagnostic trouble codes using OBD-II scanner; clear any codes related to battery disconnect
- Test drive vehicle through several drive cycles to allow PCM to relearn idle and throttle parameters
- After 50 miles, verify no check engine light and smooth throttle response throughout RPM range
