This procedure replaces the turn signal switch (multifunction switch) on the steering column of a 2015-2020 Ford F-150 with the 5.0L V8 engine.

Warnings

⚠️Battery must be disconnected for at least 2 minutes before working on steering column components to allow airbag system capacitors to discharge
Do not rotate the steering wheel or turn the ignition key while the multifunction switch is disconnected, as this may damage the clockspring
The steering column is equipped with an anti-theft locking mechanism; do not force any components during removal
ℹ️Photograph or label all electrical connectors before disconnection to ensure proper reassembly

Parts

  • Turn signal/multifunction switch assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
  • Electrical contact cleaner × 1 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and set parking brake
  2. Turn steering wheel to the straight-ahead position and note alignment
  3. Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key
  4. Disconnect negative battery terminal first, then positive battery terminal
  5. Wait at least 2 minutes for airbag system capacitors to discharge
  6. Adjust steering column to lowest and fully extended position for easier access

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove lower steering column covers
Remove the two Torx T20 screws securing the lower steering column cover beneath the column. Gently pull the lower cover away from the column, releasing any retaining clips. Set aside the cover and screws.
    Torque spec
    Steering Column Covers2 Nm (1.5 lb-ft)
  2. 2
    Remove upper steering column covers
Locate and remove the two Torx T20 screws securing the upper steering column cover. Carefully separate the upper cover from the column, being mindful of any wiring that may be routed near the cover. Set aside with lower cover.
    Torque spec
    Steering Column Covers2 Nm (1.5 lb-ft)
  3. 3
    Disconnect multifunction switch electrical connectors
Locate the large electrical connector on the back of the multifunction switch assembly (turn signal switch). Press the locking tab and carefully pull the connector straight out from the switch. If equipped with additional connectors for cruise control or wiper functions on the same assembly, disconnect those as well by depressing their locking tabs.
ℹ️Take a photo of connector orientation before removal to ensure correct reassembly
  4. 4
    Remove multifunction switch mounting screws
Locate the two Torx T20 mounting screws securing the multifunction switch to the steering column. These screws are typically located on the left side of the column. Remove both screws completely and retain them for reinstallation.
    Torque spec
    Switch Mounting Screws3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
  5. 5
    Remove multifunction switch assembly
Carefully slide the multifunction switch assembly away from the steering column. The switch may have a guide pin or slot that requires you to move it in a specific direction (typically toward the driver's seat). Gently wiggle the switch if it resists removal, but do not force it. Remove the assembly completely from the vehicle.
Do not disturb the clockspring assembly behind the switch; it must remain centered for proper airbag operation
  6. 6
    Inspect clockspring and column
With the switch removed, visually inspect the clockspring assembly for any damage, cracks, or visible wear. Verify the clockspring centering window shows the proper alignment marks. Inspect the steering column for any debris or damage. Clean the mounting surface with electrical contact cleaner if needed.
  7. 7
    Install new multifunction switch
Position the new multifunction switch assembly onto the steering column, aligning it with the guide pins or slots. Ensure the switch is fully seated against the column mounting surface before proceeding. The levers should move freely without binding.
ℹ️Ensure the switch is in the neutral position (turn signals off) before installation
  8. 8
    Install switch mounting screws
Install the two Torx T20 mounting screws through the switch into the steering column. Hand-tighten first to ensure proper thread engagement, then torque to specification using an inch-pound torque wrench. Verify the switch does not move or rotate after tightening.
    Torque spec
    Switch Mounting Screws3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
  9. 9
    Reconnect electrical connectors
Reconnect the main electrical connector to the multifunction switch, ensuring it clicks into place and the locking tab is fully engaged. Reconnect any additional connectors for cruise control or wiper functions. Gently tug on each connector to verify it is securely locked.
  10. 10
    Reinstall steering column covers
Position the upper steering column cover over the column, ensuring all wiring is properly routed and not pinched. Install the two Torx T20 screws and torque to specification. Install the lower cover, aligning all retaining clips, then install its screws and torque to specification.
    Torque spec
    Steering Column Covers2 Nm (1.5 lb-ft)
  11. 11
    Reconnect battery
Reconnect the positive battery terminal first, then the negative battery terminal. Torque the terminal bolts to specification. Ensure terminals are clean and making good contact.
    Torque spec
    Battery Terminal Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)

Reassembly

  1. Verify all steering column covers are properly secured with no gaps or loose fasteners
  2. Ensure no wiring is pinched between covers or components
  3. Return steering column to driver's preferred position

Verification

  • Turn ignition to ON position (engine off) and verify all dashboard warning lights illuminate normally, then extinguish
  • Test left turn signal function - verify left turn signal indicator flashes on instrument cluster and audible click is heard
  • Test right turn signal function - verify right turn signal indicator flashes on instrument cluster and audible click is heard
  • Test hazard light function - verify both turn signal indicators flash simultaneously
  • If equipped, test windshield wiper and washer functions through all switch positions
  • If equipped, test cruise control functions including set, resume, and cancel
  • Verify high beam and low beam functions operate correctly
  • Check that turn signals self-cancel after steering wheel rotation
  • Scan for any diagnostic trouble codes related to the multifunction switch or clockspring
  • Test drive vehicle to confirm all turn signal and multifunction switch operations work correctly under normal driving conditions
