Replace valve stem seals on the 5.0L Coyote V8 to resolve oil consumption or smoking issues. Requires removal of camshafts and valve train components.
Warnings
⚠Engine must be completely cold before starting this procedure. Hot components can cause severe burns.
⚠Do not rotate crankshaft with camshafts removed. This will cause valve-to-piston contact and severe engine damage.
⚠️Valve springs are under high tension. Improper use of valve spring compressor can cause tool or spring to fly free, causing injury.
ℹ️Take photographs during disassembly to ensure correct reassembly of all components, especially wiring harness routing.

- Remove engine cover by pulling upward on front corners to release clips.
- Drain engine coolant into appropriate container by opening radiator petcock and lower radiator hose.
- Remove air intake system including air box, intake tube, and mass airflow sensor assembly.
- Label and photograph all vacuum lines, electrical connectors, and fuel lines before disconnection.
- Relieve fuel system pressure by removing fuel pump fuse and cranking engine until it fails to start.
Procedure
- 1Remove ignition coils and spark plugsDisconnect all eight ignition coil electrical connectors. Remove the mounting bolt from each coil and pull coils straight out. Remove all spark plugs and store in order by cylinder number to inspect for wear patterns.Torque specSpark Plugs - Aluminum Head20 Nm (15 lb-ft)
- 2Remove valve coversDisconnect PCV hoses and any electrical connectors attached to valve covers. Remove valve cover bolts in reverse of tightening sequence (outside to center). Carefully lift valve covers and remove old gaskets. Clean all mating surfaces with plastic scraper and brake cleaner.Torque specCover Bolts20 Nm (15 lb-ft)
- 3Remove accessory drive componentsRemove serpentine belt by rotating tensioner clockwise. Remove alternator mounting bolts and set aside with wiring attached. Remove power steering pump mounting bolts (if equipped) and secure out of way without disconnecting lines. Remove A/C compressor mounting bolts and support compressor without disconnecting refrigerant lines.Torque specMounting Bolts60 Nm (44 lb-ft)
- 4Remove timing chain coversRemove crankshaft pulley bolt (use breaker bar and have assistant apply brake pedal). Remove harmonic balancer using appropriate puller. Remove all timing cover bolts, noting different lengths for proper reinstallation. Carefully pry timing cover away from engine block and cylinder heads. Clean all gasket surfaces thoroughly.Torque specCover Bolts20 Nm (15 lb-ft)Gasket Bolts25 Nm (19 lb-ft)
- 5Lock timing chain and mark positionsRotate crankshaft to TDC cylinder #1 (both camshaft timing marks aligned with cylinder head surface). Install timing chain locking tool if available, or mark timing chain to camshaft sprocket positions with paint pen. Mark camshaft sprocket orientation to camshafts. Photograph timing chain routing for reassembly reference.⚠Accurate timing mark documentation is critical. Incorrect timing will cause catastrophic engine damage on startup.
- 6Remove camshaft sprockets and timing chainRemove camshaft position sensor bolts and sensors. Hold camshafts with holding tool and remove camshaft sprocket bolts. Remove sprockets and timing chain as an assembly. Do not allow camshafts to rotate during removal.Torque specSensor Bolts14 Nm (10 lb-ft)
- 7Remove camshaft bearing capsLoosen camshaft bearing cap bolts in reverse order (outward from center) in multiple passes, no more than 1/4 turn per pass to prevent camshaft binding. Remove bearing caps and store in order with bolts installed in correct positions. Mark caps for intake/exhaust and cylinder bank identification if not already marked.⚠Loosen camshaft cap bolts gradually and evenly. Uneven removal can bend camshafts or damage bearing surfaces.Torque specCamshaft Cap Bolts14 Nm (10 lb-ft)
- 8Remove camshafts and rocker armsCarefully lift camshafts straight up from cylinder heads. Remove rocker arms and hydraulic lash adjusters, keeping them organized by cylinder and valve position. Store lash adjusters upright in clean engine oil to prevent air infiltration. Inspect camshaft lobes and bearing journals for wear or scoring.Torque specRocker Arm Bolts30 Nm (22 lb-ft)
- 9Compress valve springs and remove keepersInstall valve spring compressor on first valve. Compress spring until keepers are accessible. Use magnetic pick-up tool to carefully remove both valve keepers. Slowly release spring compressor and remove retainer and spring. Repeat for all 32 valves, keeping components organized by cylinder and position.⚠️Ensure valve spring compressor is properly seated before compressing. Tool slippage can cause serious injury.⚠Do not lose valve keepers. These small components are critical for valve retention.
- 10Remove old valve sealsUse valve seal removal tool or needle-nose pliers to carefully pull old valve seals off valve guides. Inspect valve stems and guides for excessive wear or damage. Clean valve stem tops and guide areas with brake cleaner. Inspect valve spring seats and shims; replace if damaged.ℹ️Do not allow valves to drop into cylinders. Stuff clean rags into cylinder bores around valves as precaution.
- 11Install new valve sealsLightly oil new valve seals with clean engine oil. Place seal protector sleeve over valve stem to protect seal during installation. Slide new seal over valve stem and guide. Use appropriate seal installation tool to press seal squarely onto valve guide until it bottoms. Remove protector sleeve. Verify seal is fully seated and not cocked. Repeat for all 32 valves.⚠Do not install seals without valve stem protector sleeves. Sharp valve keeper grooves will damage seals.
- 12Reinstall valve springs and keepersInstall valve spring and retainer onto each valve. Compress spring with valve spring compressor. Install both keepers into valve stem groove using magnetic tool. Slowly release compressor while ensuring keepers seat properly. Tap valve stem lightly with plastic hammer to verify keeper retention. Repeat for all valves.⚠Verify both keepers are fully seated in valve stem groove before releasing spring compressor. Improperly seated keepers will allow valve to drop into cylinder.
- 13Reinstall rocker arms and camshaftsInstall hydraulic lash adjusters in original positions. Install rocker arms in original positions. Apply clean engine oil to camshaft journals and lobes. Carefully install camshafts in original positions, ensuring intake and exhaust are not swapped. Verify camshaft timing marks face upward.Torque specRocker Arm Bolts30 Nm (22 lb-ft)
- 14Install camshaft bearing capsApply thin bead of RTV sealant to rear camshaft cap mating surfaces where specified. Install bearing caps in original positions and orientation. Install cap bolts finger-tight. Tighten bolts in sequence from center outward in multiple passes to specified torque. Verify camshafts rotate freely by hand after torquing.⚠Tighten camshaft caps evenly in multiple passes. Uneven tightening can bind camshafts or damage journals.Torque specCamshaft Cap Bolts14 Nm (10 lb-ft)
