Parts
- Blower Motor Control Module × 1 — Motorcraft YH-1933 or equivalent
- Electrical contact cleaner × 1 — Use dielectric grease for connectors
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key
- Open passenger door and unlock glove box
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 2 minutes for airbag system to discharge
Procedure
- 1Disconnect battery negative terminalUsing a 10mm socket, loosen the negative battery terminal bolt. Remove the cable from the terminal and secure it away from the battery post to prevent accidental reconnection during the repair.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 2Remove glove boxOpen the glove box completely. Locate the damper arm on the right side and squeeze the tabs to disconnect it from the glove box. Push inward on both sides of the glove box to release the stop tabs, then lower the glove box down and remove it from the dash. Set aside carefully to avoid breaking mounting points.
- 3Locate blower motor control moduleWith the glove box removed, look up and to the left inside the opening. The blower motor control module is a rectangular black or gray module mounted on the HVAC housing. It will have a large wire harness connector attached and cooling fins visible on one side. Use a flashlight to clearly identify the module location.
- 4Disconnect electrical connectorPress the locking tab on the electrical connector and pull straight out to disconnect it from the blower motor control module. The connector may be stiff - do not wiggle excessively. If resistance is high, spray electrical contact cleaner around the connector and allow it to penetrate before attempting removal again.
- 5Remove module mounting boltsUsing a 7mm or 8mm socket (verify which fits your specific module), remove the mounting bolts securing the blower motor control module to the HVAC housing. Most modules use 2-3 bolts. Keep track of bolt locations as some may be different lengths. The module may be positioned awkwardly requiring an extension and swivel socket.Torque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 6Remove old moduleCarefully pull the blower motor control module away from the HVAC housing. Note the orientation and positioning of the module for proper installation of the replacement. Check the mounting surface on the HVAC housing for any debris or corrosion and clean if necessary with electrical contact cleaner.
- 7Install new modulePosition the new blower motor control module in the same orientation as the old unit. Align the mounting holes and ensure the module sits flush against the HVAC housing. The cooling fins should face into the airstream. Hand-thread all mounting bolts before tightening any of them.Torque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 8Tighten module mounting boltsUsing a torque wrench with appropriate socket, tighten the module mounting bolts to specification in a cross-pattern if multiple bolts are present. This ensures even pressure and proper thermal contact with the mounting surface.Torque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 9Reconnect electrical connectorApply a small amount of dielectric grease to the terminals of the electrical connector. Align the connector with the module socket and push firmly until you hear and feel a distinct click. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is fully locked in place.
- 10Reinstall glove boxPosition the glove box in front of the opening and compress the sides to clear the dash opening. Guide it into position and release the sides so the stop tabs engage. Reconnect the damper arm to the right side of the glove box. Verify the glove box opens and closes smoothly without binding.
- 11Reconnect batteryReconnect the negative battery cable to the negative terminal. Using a 10mm socket and torque wrench, tighten the terminal bolt to specification. Do not overtighten as this can damage the terminal or battery post.⚠Do not overtighten battery terminal bolts - excessive torque can crack the battery post or strip the terminalTorque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Verify all fasteners are tightened to proper specifications
- Ensure no tools or parts are left in the glove box area
- Check that glove box operates normally and latches properly
Verification
- Turn ignition to ON position (engine off) and test all blower motor speeds (1-7 or 1-4 depending on model) using the HVAC controls
- Verify smooth operation at all fan speeds with no unusual noises, vibrations, or hesitation
- Check that fan speed responds immediately to control input without delay
- Start engine and run HVAC system for 5 minutes at various speeds to ensure proper operation under load
- Verify no diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) are present using an OBD-II scanner
- Confirm no battery drain warning lights are illuminated on the instrument cluster
