Climate Control Module

Remove and replace the climate control module (HVAC control head) located in the center dash assembly of a 2015-2020 Ford F-150 with 5.0L V8 Coyote engine.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and set parking brake
2. Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 2 minutes
3. Set steering wheel to straight-ahead position
4. Ensure ignition is in OFF position and keys are removed
5. Photograph center stack and climate control area for reference

Procedure

1. 1

   Remove center lower trim panel
   Using trim panel removal tools, carefully pry out the lower center dash trim panel below the climate controls. Start at the bottom edges and work upward. Release the retaining clips by gently pulling outward. Once clips are released, pull panel away from dash and set aside.

   Remove cupholders and storage bin
   Pull out the cupholder assembly by releasing the tabs on each side. Lift upward to remove. Remove any items from the center storage bin. Press the release tabs on the storage bin liner and lift out to access fasteners behind it.

   Remove center trim bezel screws
   Locate and remove the two T20 Torx screws at the bottom of the center trim bezel (the panel surrounding the climate controls and radio). These screws are typically located in the cupholder/storage area that was just exposed.

   Remove center trim bezel
   Carefully pull the center trim bezel away from the dash assembly, starting at the bottom. Work your way up the sides, releasing the retaining clips. Once all clips are free, tilt the bezel forward. You do not need to fully remove it, just create enough access to reach behind.

   Disconnect hazard switch connector
   Reach behind the trim bezel and locate the hazard flasher switch electrical connector. Press the release tab and disconnect the connector. The bezel can now be fully removed and set aside on a clean, soft surface.

   Remove climate control module mounting screws
   With the bezel removed, locate the four 7mm mounting screws securing the climate control module to the dash structure. Remove all four screws and place them in a magnetic tray to prevent loss.

   Cover Screws14 Nm (10 lb-ft)

   Extract climate control module
   Carefully pull the climate control module forward out of the dash opening. Pull it out far enough to access the electrical connectors on the rear of the unit. Support the module with one hand while working on the connectors.

   Disconnect electrical connectors
   Locate the main electrical connector(s) on the back of the climate control module. Most F-150s have one large connector with a sliding lock tab. Press or slide the lock tab to the unlock position, then press the release tab and pull the connector straight back to disconnect. If equipped with automatic climate control, there may be a second smaller connector to disconnect using the same procedure.

   Remove old climate control module
   With all connectors disconnected, remove the old climate control module from the vehicle. Inspect the mounting area for any debris or damaged clips. Clean the area if necessary before installing the new module.

    Install new climate control module
    Position the new climate control module near the dash opening. Connect all electrical connectors by aligning the connector keys and pushing firmly until you hear/feel a click. Ensure all locking tabs are fully engaged. Gently tug on connectors to verify secure connection.

    Secure climate control module
    Carefully slide the climate control module into the dash opening, ensuring no wires are pinched behind the unit. Align the mounting screw holes and install all four 7mm screws. Tighten screws in a cross pattern to 14.0 Nm (10.0 lb-ft).

    Reinstall center trim bezel
    Reconnect the hazard flasher switch electrical connector. Position the center trim bezel over the climate control module and radio, aligning all clips with their receptacles. Press firmly around the perimeter of the bezel until all clips snap into place. Install the two T20 Torx screws at the bottom and tighten securely.

    Reinstall storage components and lower trim
    Reinstall the center storage bin liner by pressing down until it clicks into place. Reinstall the cupholder assembly. Position the lower center trim panel and press firmly to engage all retaining clips, working from top to bottom.

    Reconnect battery and initialize system
    Reconnect the negative battery terminal and tighten securely. Turn the ignition to ON position without starting the engine. The climate control module should illuminate and perform a self-test, cycling through display segments briefly.

Reassembly

1. Verify all trim panels are flush and all clips are fully engaged
2. Ensure no gaps exist between bezel and dash components
3. Confirm all buttons and knobs operate smoothly without binding
4. Check that cupholder and storage bin function properly

Verification

• Turn ignition to ON and verify climate control module display illuminates properly
• Test all climate control functions: fan speed, temperature adjustment, mode selection, and recirculation
• Verify air flows from correct vents when changing mode settings
• Test rear defroster button (if equipped) and verify indicator light functions
• Confirm A/C compressor engages when A/C button is pressed (listen for compressor clutch engagement)
• Check that automatic climate control functions operate correctly if equipped
• Verify no fault codes are present using an OBD-II scanner
