Warnings
⚠Ensure vehicle is in Park with parking brake engaged before working on tailgate
ℹ️Some 2015-2020 F-150 models require SYNC 3 calibration after camera replacement using FORSCAN or dealership diagnostic tool
⚠Do not force trim clips - plastic retainers are fragile and easily broken in cold temperatures

Parts
- Backup camera assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Tailgate trim clips (assorted) × 5 — Ford W714399-S300
- Camera seal/gasket × 1 — Usually included with camera
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Lower tailgate to horizontal position
- Clean tailgate area around camera location to prevent dirt from entering during disassembly
- If replacing camera due to moisture intrusion, have compressed air available to dry connector cavity
Procedure
- 1Remove tailgate upper trim panelOpen the tailgate. Locate the upper trim panel that spans the width of the tailgate. Using the T20 Torx driver, remove the two screws at each end of the trim panel near the tailgate hinges. Carefully use panel removal tools to release the trim clips along the bottom edge of the panel by gently prying outward. Start from one end and work across to avoid breaking clips.
- 2Access camera mounting areaWith the upper trim panel removed, locate the backup camera assembly mounted in the center of the tailgate handle area. You should now see the back of the camera housing and its electrical connector. Use the flashlight to inspect the connector for any signs of corrosion or moisture.
- 3Disconnect camera electrical connectorPress the locking tab on the camera electrical connector and carefully pull the connector straight away from the camera. Do not pull on the wires. If corrosion is present, spray with electrical contact cleaner and allow to dry before proceeding. Note the orientation of the connector for reassembly.
- 4Remove camera mounting fastenersUsing the 10mm socket, remove the two nuts securing the camera assembly to the tailgate from inside the tailgate structure. These nuts secure studs that protrude from the back of the camera housing. Support the camera from the outside while removing the final nut to prevent it from falling.
- 5Remove old camera assemblyFrom the exterior of the tailgate, gently push the camera assembly forward and out of its mounting location. The camera may have a rubber seal or gasket that needs to be carefully worked free. Inspect the mounting area for any debris, water intrusion, or damaged paint. Clean the area thoroughly and allow to dry if moisture is present.
- 6Prepare new camera for installationInspect the new camera assembly for the proper seal/gasket installation. Ensure the gasket is properly seated in the camera body groove. Apply a thin layer of dielectric grease to the electrical connector on the new camera to prevent future corrosion. Verify the camera lens is clean and free of protective film or debris.
- 7Install new camera assemblyFrom the exterior of the tailgate, align the new camera assembly with the mounting hole in the tailgate. Ensure the seal is properly positioned. The camera should have alignment features or a specific orientation - the cable connector should point toward the driver side of the vehicle. Carefully press the camera into position until the mounting studs protrude through the tailgate inner structure.
- 8Secure camera mounting nutsFrom inside the tailgate structure, thread the two 10mm nuts onto the camera mounting studs by hand. Tighten the nuts in an alternating pattern to ensure even seating of the camera gasket. Tighten to a snug fit - these do not require specific torque and over-tightening can crack the camera housing. Verify the camera is flush with the tailgate exterior and the seal is evenly compressed.
- 9Reconnect electrical connectorConnect the electrical connector to the new camera assembly, ensuring it clicks fully into place. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is locked. Route the wiring harness to ensure it will not be pinched when the trim panel is reinstalled.
- 10Test camera operationBefore reinstalling trim, turn the ignition to the ON position (engine does not need to run). Shift the transmission into Reverse and verify the backup camera image appears on the display screen. Check that the image is clear, properly oriented, and that guideline overlays appear if equipped. If no image appears, verify connector engagement and check for blown fuses (fuse 26 in the passenger compartment fuse box).
- 11Reinstall tailgate trim panelPosition the upper trim panel and align all clip locations. Press firmly along the bottom edge to engage the trim clips - you should hear audible clicks as each clip seats. Install the T20 Torx screws at each end of the trim panel near the hinges. Do not overtighten the screws as this can crack the plastic trim.
Reassembly
- Ensure all trim clips are fully seated and trim panel is flush with tailgate
- Verify Torx screws are snug but not overtightened
- Close and open tailgate several times to verify no interference or rattles from trim panel
- Clean camera lens exterior with microfiber cloth
Verification
- Start vehicle and shift into Reverse - backup camera image should appear within 1-2 seconds
- Verify camera image is clear, properly aligned (not tilted), and shows correct field of view
- Check that dynamic guidelines appear and move with steering input if equipped with active guidelines
- Verify no warning messages appear on instrument cluster related to camera system
- If camera was replaced due to image quality issues, compare new image clarity to confirm improvement
- For 2017+ models with SYNC 3, access camera settings to verify system recognizes camera and allows adjustments
