Parts
- Dashboard speaker × 1 — Use OEM specification or aftermarket equivalent
- Trim panel clips (if broken) × 2 — Ford retainer clips
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Turn ignition off and remove key
- Disconnect battery negative terminal to prevent airbag deployment and electrical shorts
- Wait at least 2 minutes after battery disconnect for airbag system capacitors to discharge
- Identify which dashboard speaker requires replacement (driver side or passenger side)
Procedure
- 1Remove A-pillar trim panelCarefully pull the A-pillar trim panel away from the pillar starting at the top. The panel is secured by push-in clips. Pull firmly but steadily to release clips without breaking them. On models with tweeter speakers in the A-pillar, disconnect the speaker connector before fully removing the panel.
- 2Remove upper dashboard end capLocate the dashboard end cap on the side where the speaker is being replaced. Use a trim removal tool to carefully pry the end cap away from the dashboard, starting at the rear edge. The cap is held by 2-3 clips. Work slowly to avoid breaking the plastic tabs.
- 3Remove dashboard top cover panelLocate and remove the T20 Torx screws securing the dashboard top cover panel near the windshield. There are typically 2 screws in the area above the speaker location. Carefully lift the rear edge of the panel and slide it rearward to disengage the front clips from under the windshield trim.
- 4Access speaker mounting areaWith the top cover panel removed, locate the dashboard speaker grille. The grille may be integrated into the dashboard or separate. If separate, use a trim tool to carefully pry up the speaker grille, releasing the retaining clips around its perimeter.
- 5Remove speaker mounting fastenersRemove the speaker mounting screws (typically three T20 Torx screws or 7mm bolts) securing the speaker to the dashboard structure. Support the speaker with one hand while removing the final fastener to prevent it from falling into the dashboard cavity.
- 6Disconnect speaker electrical connectorCarefully pull the speaker upward to access the electrical connector on the back. Press the locking tab on the connector and pull it straight off the speaker terminals. Note the orientation of the connector for reinstallation.
- 7Remove old speakerLift the speaker out of the dashboard mounting location. Inspect the mounting area for any debris or damaged mounting points that need attention before installing the new speaker.
- 8Install new speakerConnect the electrical connector to the new speaker, ensuring it clicks into place securely. Test fit the speaker in the mounting location to verify proper alignment with mounting holes. Lower the speaker into position, ensuring the wire harness is not pinched.
- 9Secure speaker mounting fastenersInstall the speaker mounting screws or bolts and tighten in a cross pattern to ensure even seating. Torque to manufacturer specification if provided, or snug firmly by hand (typically 10-15 inch-lbs for plastic bosses). Do not overtighten as this can crack the plastic mounting points.
Reassembly
- Reinstall the speaker grille if separate, ensuring all clips engage properly
- Reinstall the dashboard top cover panel by engaging front clips first, then lowering into place and securing with T20 Torx screws
- Reinstall the dashboard end cap by aligning and pressing firmly until all clips engage
- Reinstall the A-pillar trim panel, reconnecting any speaker connectors first, then pressing the panel into place starting at the bottom
- Reconnect the battery negative terminal and torque to specification if using torque wrench
Verification
- Reconnect battery and turn ignition to ON position without starting engine
- Turn on audio system and test speaker operation at various volume levels
- Verify no rattles or buzzing sounds from the speaker area
- Test balance and fade controls to confirm the replaced speaker is functioning properly
- Check that all dashboard trim panels are secure with no gaps or loose clips
- Verify no warning lights appear on the instrument cluster after battery reconnection
