This procedure covers inspection, adjustment, and replacement of the transmission shift linkage on a 2015-2020 Ford F-150 with 5.0L V8 and column-mounted shifter.
Warnings
⚠Ensure vehicle is securely supported on jack stands before working underneath
⚠Improper shift linkage installation or adjustment will prevent proper gear engagement and may cause transmission damage
ℹ️Have a helper available to operate the shifter from inside the vehicle during adjustment

Parts
- Shift linkage assembly × 1 — BC3Z-7341-A or equivalent
- Shift linkage bushings × 2 — Use OEM specification
- Retaining clips × 2 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and apply parking brake
- Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels
- Verify shifter moves freely through all gear positions from inside vehicle
- Raise front of vehicle and support securely on jack stands at frame rails
- Allow exhaust system to cool completely if vehicle was recently operated
Procedure
- 1Access shift linkage from underneathPosition yourself under the vehicle near the transmission bell housing area on driver side. Locate the shift linkage running from the column down to the transmission manual lever. Use flashlight to inspect the linkage path and identify connection points at both column and transmission ends.
- 2Inspect linkage conditionCheck all linkage components for wear, damage, or corrosion. Examine both bushings where linkage connects to column and transmission lever. Look for cracks in plastic bushings, worn pivot points, or loose connections. Verify retaining clips are present and properly seated. If bushings are worn or cracked, replacement is required.
- 3Disconnect linkage at transmissionLocate the linkage connection at the transmission manual lever on driver side of transmission. Use needle nose pliers to remove the retaining clip securing the linkage ball socket to the transmission lever stud. Carefully pry the linkage socket off the ball stud using flathead screwdriver. Note the orientation of components for reassembly.
- 4Disconnect linkage at columnTrace the linkage up to the steering column connection point. Remove the retaining clip at the column-side connection using needle nose pliers. Separate the linkage from the column shift lever. The linkage assembly should now be free to remove from vehicle.
- 5Remove linkage mounting hardwareIdentify any mounting brackets or support clips securing the linkage to the frame or body. Remove bolts securing linkage brackets using 10mm or 13mm socket as applicable. Keep track of all fasteners and bracket positions for reinstallation.Torque specLinkage Bolts15 Nm (11 lb-ft)
- 6Install new or serviced linkageIf replacing linkage, transfer any reusable brackets to new assembly. Position the linkage assembly along its routing path from transmission to column. Install new bushings at both connection points if not pre-installed. Ensure linkage routing does not contact exhaust components or other heat sources and has adequate clearance from moving parts.
- 7Secure linkage mounting bracketsInstall and hand-tighten all linkage mounting bracket bolts to frame or body. Verify linkage has proper clearance throughout its range of motion before final tightening. Torque all linkage mounting bolts to specification using torque wrench.Torque specLinkage Bolts15 Nm (11 lb-ft)
- 8Connect linkage to columnAt the steering column connection point, attach the linkage ball socket to the column shift lever stud. Ensure the connection is fully seated. Install a new retaining clip and verify it is properly engaged to prevent separation.
- 9Connect linkage to transmission leverPosition the transmission in Neutral by moving the manual lever to the middle detent position. Attach the linkage ball socket to the transmission manual lever stud, ensuring full seating. Install new retaining clip and verify secure engagement.ℹ️Transmission must be in Neutral position before connecting linkage for proper adjustment
- 10Adjust and verify shifter operationHave a helper move the column shifter slowly through all gear positions (P-R-N-D-L) while you observe the transmission manual lever movement from underneath. Verify the transmission lever reaches each detent position fully and that indicator positions match actual transmission gear selection. The linkage should move smoothly without binding. If adjustment is needed, loosen linkage bolts slightly, reposition for proper alignment, and re-torque.
- 11Final inspectionPerform final visual inspection of all connections, retaining clips, and mounting points. Verify linkage has adequate clearance from exhaust, driveshaft, and frame components throughout full range of motion. Check that all fasteners are properly torqued and secure.
Reassembly
- Lower vehicle from jack stands
- Remove wheel chocks
- Start engine and verify proper gear engagement in all positions
- Verify Park pawl engages and holds vehicle when in Park position on an incline
Verification
- With engine running and brake applied, shift through all gear positions confirming smooth engagement without hesitation or grinding
- Verify transmission indicator in instrument cluster matches shifter position in all gears
- Confirm vehicle does not move in Park and reverse lights illuminate in Reverse
- Test drive vehicle to verify proper shift quality and gear selection under load
- Verify shifter returns to Park position smoothly and key can be removed from ignition
