This procedure replaces the airbag control module (also called the Restraint Control Module or RCM), which is the computer that controls all airbag deployment functions and stores crash data.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
2. Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key
3. Disconnect negative battery terminal first, then positive terminal
4. Wait a MINIMUM of 60 seconds for airbag system backup power to discharge - set a timer to be certain
5. Ensure you have the new airbag module available and programming equipment ready before removal
6. Document any airbag fault codes currently stored in the system using scan tool before starting work

Procedure

1. 1

   Remove center console trim
   Using trim removal tools, carefully pry up the center console trim panel starting from the rear cupholders. Work your way forward, releasing the clips that secure the trim. Disconnect any electrical connectors for power outlets or USB ports as needed. Set trim pieces aside in a safe location.

   Access the transmission tunnel area
   Remove the lower center console panels to access the transmission tunnel area between the driver and passenger seats. The airbag control module is located under the center console, mounted to the transmission tunnel. You may need to remove additional trim or carpeting to fully expose the module.

   Locate the airbag control module
   The RCM is a metal box approximately 4x6 inches, typically mounted on the transmission tunnel with a large yellow connector and a smaller connector. It may have a protective cover that needs to be removed first. Note the orientation and routing of all connectors before removal.

   Disconnect electrical connectors
   Carefully unlock and disconnect the main yellow airbag harness connector from the module. This connector has a safety lock mechanism - press the release tab fully before pulling. Then disconnect the secondary connector (usually black or gray). Do not force connectors - ensure locking mechanisms are fully released.
   ⚠Ensure 60 seconds have elapsed since battery disconnect before touching any connectors. Airbag connectors use special locking mechanisms - forcing them can cause damage.

   Remove module mounting bolts
   Using a 10mm socket, remove the bolts securing the airbag control module to the mounting bracket on the transmission tunnel. There are typically 2-3 mounting bolts. Support the module as you remove the final bolt to prevent it from dropping.

   Remove old module
   Carefully remove the old airbag control module from the vehicle. Inspect the mounting location for any corrosion, damage, or debris. Clean the mounting surface if necessary. Check that all rubber grommets or isolators remain in place on the mounting bracket.

   Install new module
   Remove the new airbag control module from its protective packaging only when ready to install. Position the new module in the mounting location in the same orientation as the old one. Ensure any mounting grommets or isolators are properly seated.
   ⚠Handle the new module only by its metal case. Do not touch electrical contacts or connectors with bare hands. Keep away from static electricity sources.

   Install mounting bolts
   Install the module mounting bolts and tighten by hand initially. Once all bolts are started, torque them to specification using a torque wrench. Do not overtighten as this can damage the module case or mounting threads.

   Connect electrical connectors
   Connect the secondary connector first, ensuring it clicks fully into place. Then connect the main yellow airbag harness connector, pushing firmly until you hear and feel it lock. Verify both connectors are fully seated and locked by gently pulling on them - they should not come loose.

    Reconnect battery
    Reconnect the positive battery terminal first, then the negative terminal. Torque the battery terminal bolts to specification - do not overtighten as this can damage the battery posts.
    ⚠The airbag warning light will illuminate and remain on until the module is programmed. This is normal.

    Program new module
    Using Ford IDS or equivalent professional scan tool, perform the RCM configuration and programming procedure. This process will program the module with your vehicle's VIN, enable all airbag circuits, and configure the module for your specific vehicle options (seat occupancy sensors, side airbags, etc.). Follow all prompts from the scan tool completely.
    ⚠️Module programming is MANDATORY. The airbag system will not function without proper programming. If you cannot complete this step, do not drive the vehicle - have it towed to a facility with proper equipment.

    Clear fault codes and verify system
    After programming is complete, clear all airbag fault codes using the scan tool. Turn the ignition on (engine off) and verify the airbag warning light follows the proper startup sequence: it should illuminate for approximately 6 seconds during bulb check, then turn off. If the light stays on or flashes, retrieve fault codes and diagnose the issue before proceeding.

Reassembly

1. Reinstall all center console trim panels in reverse order of removal, ensuring all clips are properly seated
2. Reconnect all electrical connectors for power outlets and USB ports
3. Verify all trim pieces are secure and properly aligned
4. Test all center console functions including power outlets, cupholders, and storage compartments

Verification

• Turn ignition to ON position and verify the airbag warning light illuminates briefly (approximately 6 seconds) then turns off completely
• Using the scan tool, verify no airbag fault codes are present in the system
• Verify all airbag circuits show as active and functional in the scan tool live data
• Confirm the crash data and event logs are clear (no old crash data present)
• Test drive the vehicle briefly and verify the airbag light remains off during operation
• If the airbag warning light remains illuminated, flashes, or any fault codes are present, DO NOT drive the vehicle - diagnose and repair the fault immediately
