Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 2 minutes before proceeding
- Roll window fully up before disconnecting battery (if window is functional)
- Gather all tools and new parts
- Take photos of door panel and interior for reference during reassembly
Procedure
- 1Remove door panel screws and handlesOpen the front door fully. Remove the T20 Torx screw behind the door pull handle cover. Carefully pry out the small trim cover behind the interior door handle using a plastic trim tool. Remove the T30 Torx screw securing the door handle assembly. Remove any additional T20 screws at the bottom edge of the door panel.
- 2Disconnect door panel electrical connectionsCarefully pull the switch panel from the armrest area. Disconnect all electrical connectors from the window switches, mirror switch, and door lock switch by pressing the release tabs. On models with puddle lights, disconnect the puddle light connector from the bottom of the door panel.
- 3Remove door panelUsing trim panel removal tools, carefully release the retaining clips around the perimeter of the door panel by working from bottom to top. Start at the lower corners and work your way around. Once all clips are released, lift the panel up and away from the door to disengage it from the window sill area. Set the panel aside on a protected surface.
- 4Remove or peel back vapor barrierCarefully peel back the plastic vapor barrier to access the window regulator and motor assembly. If the barrier uses adhesive, work slowly to avoid tearing. If necessary, completely remove the barrier, but plan to replace or re-seal it during reassembly.
- 5Secure window glass in up positionIf window is not already in the full up position, manually push it up. Use masking tape to secure the window glass to the door frame, taping it in the fully raised position. This prevents the glass from falling when the regulator is disconnected. Ensure tape is secure on both sides of the glass.
- 6Disconnect window motor electrical connectorLocate the window motor electrical connector inside the door cavity. Press the connector release tab and disconnect the harness from the motor. Move the wiring harness aside to provide clearance for regulator removal.
- 7Disconnect window glass from regulatorLocate the two window glass mounting bolts that attach the glass to the regulator carrier. These are accessed through holes in the inner door structure. Use a 10mm socket to remove these bolts while supporting the glass. Once disconnected, ensure the glass is securely taped in the up position.
- 8Remove regulator and motor mounting boltsLocate all regulator mounting bolts (typically 3-4 bolts securing the regulator track and motor assembly to the door). - 9Remove regulator and motor assemblyCarefully maneuver the regulator and motor assembly out through the access opening in the door. You may need to tilt and rotate the assembly to fit it through the opening. The regulator cables and tracks must be carefully guided out to avoid bending or damage to door components.
- 10Install new regulator and motor assemblyGuide the new regulator and motor assembly into the door through the access opening, reversing the removal process. Align the regulator tracks and motor mounting holes with the door mounting points. Ensure the regulator cables are properly positioned and not kinked or twisted.
- 11Install regulator mounting boltsInstall all regulator and motor mounting bolts finger-tight first to ensure proper alignment. - 12Connect window glass to regulatorRemove the tape securing the window glass. Carefully lower the glass until the mounting holes in the glass bracket align with the regulator carrier mounting points. Install the two glass mounting bolts and torque to specification. - 13Connect electrical and test operationReconnect the window motor electrical connector. Temporarily reconnect the battery negative terminal and test window operation before final reassembly. Verify the window moves smoothly up and down through its full range of travel. Check for any binding or unusual noises. Adjust glass alignment if necessary. Disconnect battery again before continuing reassembly.
Reassembly
- Re-seal or replace the vapor barrier, ensuring complete coverage and proper adhesion to prevent water intrusion
- Align door panel clips with their receptacles in the door frame and press firmly to seat all clips
- Reconnect all electrical connectors for switches, ensuring each connector clicks into place
- Install door panel screws and trim covers in reverse order of removal
- Reconnect battery negative terminal and torque to specification
- Perform final window operation test and verify all door panel switches function correctly
Verification
- Test window operation through complete up and down cycles multiple times to ensure smooth operation
- Verify window fully seats in up position and seals properly against weather stripping
- Check that window does not bind or make unusual noises during operation
- Verify auto-up and auto-down features work correctly (if equipped)
- Confirm all door panel switches and features operate normally
- Check door panel for secure mounting with no rattles or loose clips
- Verify door panel fit and gaps are even around all edges
