Parts
- Dash speaker (3.5 inch or 4 inch depending on trim level) × 1 — Ford CL3Z-18808-A or aftermarket equivalent
- Trim panel clips (if damaged) × 5 — Ford push-pin retainers
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Allow interior to cool if vehicle has been in direct sunlight (heated plastic is more prone to cracking)
- Gather all trim removal tools and place protective cloth on dash to prevent scratches
- Identify which dash speaker needs replacement (driver side A-pillar area or passenger side A-pillar area)
Procedure
- 1Remove A-pillar trim panelCarefully pull the A-pillar trim panel away from the windshield pillar starting at the top. The panel is held by push-pin clips. Work slowly from top to bottom, releasing each clip without forcing. If equipped with side curtain airbag, disconnect the airbag connector by pressing the release tab.
- 2Remove upper dash end capLocate the dash end cap on the side where the speaker is being replaced. This cap wraps around the end of the dashboard near the door opening. Use a trim tool to release the clips holding the end cap in place. Pull the cap rearward and away from the dash to remove it completely.
- 3Access speaker grilleWith the A-pillar trim and dash end cap removed, you will now see the speaker grille located in the upper corner of the dash near the windshield. The grille is a small triangular or rectangular piece that covers the speaker.
- 4Remove speaker grilleUse a trim tool to carefully pry up the speaker grille. It is held in place by small clips on the underside. Start at one edge and work around the perimeter until all clips release. Lift the grille away from the dash to expose the speaker.
- 5Remove speaker mounting screwsThe speaker is secured with either 2 or 3 Phillips head screws depending on the model year. Remove these screws completely and set them aside. Use a magnetic screwdriver or parts tray to avoid losing the small screws.Torque specCover Screws14 Nm (10 lb-ft)
- 6Disconnect speaker connectorCarefully pull the speaker forward enough to access the electrical connector on the back. Press the release tab on the connector and pull it straight off the speaker terminals. Note the orientation of the connector for reinstallation.
- 7Remove old speakerWith the connector disconnected, remove the old speaker from the dash opening. Inspect the mounting location for any debris or damage to the mounting surface.
- 8Install new speakerPosition the new speaker in the dash opening, ensuring it is oriented correctly with the mounting holes aligned. Connect the electrical connector to the speaker terminals until you hear a click, confirming it is fully seated.
- 9Secure speaker with screwsInstall the speaker mounting screws and tighten them in a cross pattern if there are multiple screws. Torque the screws to specification to avoid cracking the speaker housing or stripping the mounting points.Torque specCover Screws14 Nm (10 lb-ft)
- 10Test speaker operationBefore reinstalling trim panels, turn the ignition to the accessory position and test the speaker. Adjust the balance/fade settings to isolate the replaced speaker and verify it produces clear sound without distortion or rattles.
- 11Reinstall speaker grillePosition the speaker grille over the speaker and press firmly around all edges until all clips engage. Ensure the grille sits flush with the surrounding dash surface.
- 12Reinstall dash end capAlign the dash end cap with its mounting location and press firmly to engage the retaining clips. Ensure the cap is fully seated and aligned with the surrounding dash surfaces.
- 13Reinstall A-pillar trimIf side curtain airbag connector was disconnected, reconnect it first. Align the A-pillar trim with its mounting position and press firmly along the length of the panel to engage all push-pin clips. Start at the bottom and work toward the top for best results.
Reassembly
- Verify all trim panels are fully seated and aligned with no gaps
- Check that all clips are properly engaged by gently pulling on trim pieces
- Ensure no wiring is pinched behind trim panels
Verification
- Turn ignition to accessory mode and test audio system
- Use balance and fade controls to isolate the replaced speaker
- Verify speaker produces clear sound at low, medium, and high volumes without distortion or rattles
- Inspect all reinstalled trim panels for proper fit and finish
- Check for any squeaks or rattles from trim panels while pressing on them
