Replace the passenger-side airbag module in a 2021-2024 Ford F-150, including proper battery disconnect procedures and system verification.

Warnings

⚠️AIRBAG SYSTEM IS SAFETY-CRITICAL. Improper installation can result in airbag failure to deploy during a collision, causing serious injury or death. If you are not confident in any step, seek professional service.
⚠️Battery MUST be disconnected and minimum 2-minute wait observed before touching any airbag components. Failure to wait can cause accidental deployment and severe injury.
⚠️Never use electrical test equipment on airbag circuits while connected. Never probe airbag connectors with power applied.
⚠️Always carry airbag module with cover facing UP, away from your body. Place module cover-side UP on a clean surface. Accidental deployment can cause serious injury.
Handle new airbag module carefully. Do not drop, strike, or expose to moisture, grease, or electrical static discharge.
After installation, airbag warning light MUST be cleared using proper diagnostic scan tool. Light remaining on indicates system fault.
ℹ️This procedure requires proper disposal of old airbag module. Contact local waste management or Ford dealer for proper disposal procedures. Do not throw in regular trash.

Parts

  • Passenger airbag module × 1 — Use OEM Ford specification
  • Airbag module retaining clips (if damaged) × 1 — Use OEM specification
  • Dashboard trim clips (if damaged during removal) × 1 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface, turn off ignition, and remove key fob from vehicle interior
  2. Ensure front passenger seat is moved fully rearward and reclined to provide maximum dashboard access
  3. Take photos of dashboard trim arrangement before disassembly for reference during reassembly
  4. Open hood and locate battery in engine compartment
  5. Ensure you have clean workspace ready to place airbag module cover-side UP away from work area

Procedure

  1. 1
Disconnect battery and observe waiting period
Using 10mm socket, loosen and remove negative battery terminal bolt. Remove negative cable from battery post and secure away from terminal. Then remove positive terminal in same manner. Wait a MINIMUM of 2 minutes (recommend 5 minutes) to allow airbag system capacitors to fully discharge before proceeding.
⚠️Do NOT proceed until at least 2 full minutes have elapsed after battery disconnect. Set a timer to ensure compliance.
  2. 2
    Remove glove box assembly
Open glove box fully. Remove contents. Locate damper arm on right side of glove box and squeeze release tabs to disconnect damper from glove box door. Locate hinge pins on both sides and compress glove box sides inward to release from dashboard. Lower glove box completely and set aside.
  3. 3
    Remove upper dashboard trim panel
Starting at passenger side, use plastic trim tools to carefully release clips securing upper dashboard trim panel above glove box area. Work from right to left, releasing approximately 8-10 clips. Gently pull panel forward and up to release. Disconnect any electrical connectors for vents or sensors if equipped. Set panel aside in safe location.
Dashboard trim clips break easily. Apply gentle, even pressure and work slowly to avoid damage.
  4. 4
    Access airbag module mounting area
With glove box and trim removed, locate the passenger airbag module housing in center of dashboard. Identify the airbag electrical connector (typically yellow with locking tab). The module is mounted behind a door panel in the dashboard face.
  5. 5
    Disconnect airbag electrical connector
Locate yellow airbag connector at rear of module. Press down on orange locking tab while pulling connector halves apart. Do NOT pull on wires. Ensure connector is fully separated and position cable away from work area to prevent accidental reconnection.
⚠️Verify battery has been disconnected for at least 2 minutes before touching connector. Never force connector or use metal tools near connector pins.
  6. 6
    Remove airbag module mounting bolts
Locate the airbag module mounting bolts (typically 4 Torx bolts accessible through openings in the metal dashboard structure). Using appropriate Torx bit (usually T30), remove all mounting bolts. Keep bolts organized for reinstallation. Note bolt locations as they may be different lengths.
Support airbag module while removing final bolt to prevent it from falling.
    Torque spec
    Airbag Module Bolts7 Nm (5 lb-ft)
  7. 7
    Remove old airbag module
Carefully pull airbag module forward out of dashboard opening. Keep module cover facing UP and away from your body at all times. Check for any additional clips or retainers that may still be engaged. Once free, immediately place module cover-side UP on clean surface away from work area.
⚠️Never place airbag module cover-side down. Always carry and store with cover facing UP away from your body.
  8. 8
Inspect mounting area and prepare new module
Inspect dashboard mounting structure for damage, cracks, or broken clips. Clean mounting surface with clean cloth. Remove new airbag module from packaging carefully, avoiding contact with deployment surface. Verify part number matches vehicle specification. Do not remove protective cover if present until ready to install.
Do not touch or contaminate airbag deployment surface. Handle only by sides and rear housing.
  9. 9
    Install new airbag module
Position new airbag module into dashboard opening, keeping cover facing outward. Align mounting holes with dashboard structure. Ensure no wiring is pinched between module and dashboard. Press module into position ensuring any retaining clips engage properly.
  10. 10
    Install and torque mounting bolts
Install all airbag module mounting bolts hand-tight first, ensuring proper thread engagement. Using torque wrench, tighten bolts in cross-pattern to 7.0 Nm (5.0 lb-ft). Verify module is secure and flush with dashboard contour.
Do NOT overtighten airbag mounting bolts. Overtightening can damage module housing or prevent proper deployment.
    Torque spec
    Airbag Module Bolts7 Nm (5 lb-ft)
  11. 11
    Reconnect airbag electrical connector
Route airbag harness connector to module. Align connector halves and push firmly together until click is heard. Press orange locking tab down to secure connection. Gently tug on connector to verify it is locked and will not separate.
  12. 12
Reinstall dashboard trim and glove box
Reconnect any electrical connectors to upper trim panel. Position trim panel and press firmly to engage all clips, working from left to right. Reinstall glove box by inserting hinge pins into dashboard slots and squeezing sides inward. Reconnect glove box damper arm. Verify all trim pieces are flush and secure.
  13. 13
    Reconnect battery
Reconnect positive battery terminal first, then negative terminal. Torque both battery terminal bolts to 8.0 Nm (6.0 lb-ft) using torque wrench. Ensure connections are clean and tight.
    Torque spec
    Battery Terminal Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
  14. 14
Clear airbag codes and verify system
Turn ignition to ON position (do not start engine). Observe airbag warning light on instrument cluster - it should illuminate for approximately 6 seconds then turn off. If light remains on or flashes, system has detected a fault. Connect OBD-II scan tool capable of accessing airbag system, clear any stored codes, and verify no active faults present.
⚠️Do NOT operate vehicle if airbag warning light remains illuminated. This indicates system fault and airbag may not deploy in crash.

Reassembly

  1. Verify all dashboard trim panels are properly seated and all clips engaged
  2. Confirm glove box opens and closes smoothly with damper functioning correctly
  3. Check that no tools or parts were left in dashboard area
  4. Ensure passenger airbag ON/OFF indicator (if equipped) functions properly when seat sensor is activated

Verification

  • Turn ignition to ON position and verify airbag warning light illuminates briefly then extinguishes completely within 6-10 seconds
  • Using professional scan tool, verify no active or pending airbag system fault codes are present
  • Visually inspect dashboard for proper airbag module alignment and trim fit
  • Verify passenger airbag indicator light functions correctly (if vehicle is equipped with occupant detection system)
  • Gently press on dashboard above airbag area to ensure module is securely mounted with no movement or rattles
  • Test drive vehicle and confirm no warning lights illuminate and all dashboard components are secure without squeaks or rattles
  • Consider having system professionally verified at Ford dealer to ensure proper installation and functionality
