Preparation
- Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
- Turn ignition off and remove key from vehicle
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 2 minutes for airbag system to discharge
- Move passenger seat fully rearward for access (or remove seat entirely for easier access)
- Allow HVAC system to cool if recently operated
Procedure
- 1Disconnect batteryLoosen and remove the negative battery terminal bolt. Move the cable away from the battery post and secure it to prevent accidental contact.
- 2Remove lower trim panelFrom the passenger footwell, locate and remove the lower dash trim panel. This panel is secured by plastic push clips. Carefully pull the panel away from the dash to release the clips, starting from the bottom edge and working upward.
- 3Locate blower motor housingIdentify the blower motor assembly on the passenger side of the HVAC housing. The motor is a cylindrical component approximately 6 inches in diameter mounted vertically in the housing with the electrical connector facing toward the center of the vehicle.
- 4Disconnect electrical connectorPress the release tab on the blower motor electrical connector and pull straight out to disconnect. If present, disconnect the blower motor resistor connector using the same method. Note the routing of the wiring harness for reinstallation.
- 5Remove blower motor screwsLocate the three mounting screws securing the blower motor to the HVAC housing. These screws are positioned around the perimeter of the motor flange. Remove all three screws using an 8mm socket. Keep screws organized as they will be reused.Torque specBlower Motor Screws4 Nm (3 lb-ft)
- 6Extract blower motorCarefully pull the blower motor assembly straight out from the HVAC housing. The motor and fan cage assembly should come out as one unit. Tilt and rotate as needed to maneuver the fan cage through the opening without damaging the housing or surrounding components.⚠The blower fan cage may have accumulated debris; support the assembly to prevent scattering dirt into the vehicle interior
- 7Inspect housing and resistorWith the blower motor removed, inspect the HVAC housing opening for debris, leaves, or obstructions. Remove any foreign material. Inspect the blower motor resistor (if equipped) for signs of burning, corrosion, or damage. The resistor is typically mounted near the blower motor opening.
- 8Install new blower motorAlign the new blower motor assembly with the mounting holes in the HVAC housing. Carefully insert the motor and fan cage into the housing, ensuring the mounting flange seats flush against the housing. The electrical connector tab should face toward the vehicle centerline.
- 9Install mounting screwsInstall the three blower motor mounting screws by hand to ensure proper thread engagement. Once all screws are started, tighten them in a star pattern to 4.0 Nm (3.0 lb-ft) using a torque wrench. Do not overtighten as the housing is plastic.Torque specBlower Motor Screws4 Nm (3 lb-ft)
- 10Reconnect electrical connectorsReconnect the blower motor electrical connector, ensuring it clicks fully into place. If applicable, reconnect the blower motor resistor connector. Verify both connections are secure by gently tugging on the connectors.
- 11Test blower motor operationTemporarily reconnect the negative battery terminal (finger-tight only). Turn the ignition to the ON position and test the blower motor at all speed settings to verify proper operation and that no unusual noises are present. Turn ignition off and disconnect battery terminal again.
- 12Reinstall trim panelAlign the lower dash trim panel with the mounting locations. Press firmly on each clip location until all clips are fully seated and the panel is secure.
- 13Reconnect batteryReconnect the negative battery terminal and tighten the terminal bolt to specification using a torque wrench.
Reassembly
- Ensure all electrical connections are fully seated and locked
- Verify all mounting screws are tightened to proper specification
- Confirm trim panel clips are fully engaged and panel is flush with dash
- Return passenger seat to desired position if it was moved
Verification
- Start the engine and test blower motor operation at all fan speed settings (speeds 1-7 or as equipped)
- Verify airflow is strong and consistent at all speeds with no unusual noises, vibrations, or rattles
- Test blower motor with different mode selections (defrost, floor, vent) to ensure proper operation
- Verify no air leaks around the blower motor housing
- Check that no warning lights are illuminated on the instrument cluster
