Parts

  • Climate control module × 1 — Use OEM specification
  • Trim panel retaining clips (if broken) × 1 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key fob from vehicle
  3. Open driver's door and leave open throughout procedure to maintain interior lighting
  4. Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 2 minutes for airbag system to discharge
  5. Gather all tools and replacement parts within easy reach

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove lower instrument panel trim
Using a trim panel removal tool, carefully pry out the lower instrument panel trim piece below the climate control module. Start at the bottom edge and work around the perimeter. Release all retaining clips and pull the trim forward. Disconnect any electrical connectors for switches or lights if equipped, then set trim aside.
  2. 2
    Remove center stack trim bezel
Insert trim removal tool at the top edge of the center stack trim bezel surrounding the touchscreen and climate controls. Carefully release clips working from top to bottom on both sides. Gently pull the bezel forward approximately 2 inches, being careful not to strain any connected wiring. This bezel typically has 8-10 retaining clips around its perimeter.
  3. 3
    Disconnect bezel electrical connectors
Reach behind the center stack bezel and disconnect any electrical connectors for hazard switch, heated seat controls, or other integrated switches. Press the locking tabs and pull connectors straight out. Note the position and routing of each connector for reassembly.
  4. 4
    Remove center stack bezel completely
With all electrical connections released, remove the center stack bezel completely from the vehicle and set aside on a protected surface to avoid scratching. This provides full access to the climate control module mounting screws.
  5. 5
Remove climate control module mounting screws
Locate the four T20 Torx screws securing the climate control module to the instrument panel structure. These are typically positioned at the corners of the module. Remove all four screws and store in a magnetic tray. Note that some screws may be different lengths; the upper screws are typically shorter than the lower screws.

  6. 6
    Pull climate control module forward
Carefully pull the climate control module straight forward from the instrument panel approximately 3-4 inches. Support the module with one hand to prevent it from hanging by its electrical connectors. Use a flashlight to identify the connectors on the rear of the module.
  7. 7
    Disconnect climate control electrical connectors
Locate the main electrical connector on the rear of the climate control module. Press the locking tab (typically red or gray) and pull the connector straight back to disconnect. If equipped with dual-zone climate control, there may be a second connector. Ensure all connectors are fully released before removing the module completely.
  8. 8
    Remove old climate control module
With all electrical connections disconnected, remove the climate control module completely from the vehicle. Inspect the mounting area for any debris or damaged clips. If transferring any components to the new module, do so carefully.
  9. 9
    Install new climate control module
Position the new climate control module near the opening in the instrument panel. Connect all electrical connectors to the rear of the new module, ensuring each connector locks into place with an audible click. Verify connections are secure by gently tugging on each connector.
  10. 10
    Secure climate control module
Carefully push the climate control module straight back into the instrument panel opening, ensuring it is properly aligned with the mounting holes. Install the four T20 Torx mounting screws, starting them all by hand before tightening. Tighten screws in a cross pattern to the specified torque to ensure even seating of the module.

  11. 11
    Reinstall center stack bezel
Reconnect all electrical connectors to switches and controls on the center stack bezel in reverse order of removal. Position the bezel near the instrument panel and verify all connectors are properly seated. Align the bezel with the instrument panel opening and press firmly around all edges to engage the retaining clips. Listen for audible clicks indicating proper clip engagement.
  12. 12
    Reinstall lower instrument panel trim
Reconnect any electrical connectors to the lower instrument panel trim piece. Align the trim with its mounting location and press firmly to engage all retaining clips, starting at one side and working across. Ensure the trim is flush and properly seated along all edges.

Reassembly

  1. Reconnect the negative battery terminal and tighten securely
  2. Verify all trim panels are properly seated and aligned with no gaps or misalignment
  3. Check that all dashboard switches and controls operate smoothly without binding
  4. Ensure no tools or fasteners were left in the dashboard cavity

Verification

  • Turn ignition to ON position and verify the climate control display illuminates properly
  • Test all climate control functions including fan speed, temperature adjustment, mode selection, and defrost
  • Verify air flows from correct vents when mode is changed (floor, dash, defrost)
  • Test A/C and heat functions to ensure commands are being sent to the HVAC system
  • Check that all dashboard warning lights perform normal bulb check and extinguish
  • If dual-zone climate control is equipped, verify both driver and passenger side controls function independently
  • Verify radio, clock, and other systems reset by battery disconnect are functioning and reset any needed settings
  • Road test vehicle and verify climate control operates normally under all conditions
