Parts

  • Multifunction switch (dimmer/turn signal switch) × 1 — Use OEM Ford specification

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and set parking brake
  2. Turn ignition off and remove key fob from vehicle
  3. Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 2 minutes for airbag system to discharge
  4. Turn steering wheel to center position and verify wheels are straight ahead
  5. Gather all tools and new parts before beginning

Procedure

  1. 1
    Disconnect battery and prepare workspace
Disconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm socket. Wait a minimum of 2 minutes to allow the airbag supplemental restraint system (SRS) to fully discharge. This is critical for safety when working around the steering column.

    Battery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
  2. 2
    Remove lower steering column covers
Using a trim panel removal tool, carefully pry the lower steering column cover at the seam points. Remove the T20 Torx screws securing the lower cover (typically 2-3 screws). Separate the lower cover from the upper cover and remove it from the steering column. Take care not to damage the trim clips.
    Torque spec
    Cover Screws12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
  3. 3
    Remove upper steering column cover
Locate and remove the T20 Torx screws securing the upper steering column cover (typically 2 screws near the instrument cluster). Gently lift the upper cover away from the steering column, being mindful of any wire routing clips attached to it. Set the cover aside.
    Torque spec
    Cover Screws12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
  4. 4
    Disconnect multifunction switch electrical connectors
Locate the electrical connectors on the back of the multifunction switch assembly. Depress the locking tabs on each connector (typically 2 connectors) and carefully pull them straight back to disconnect. Note the routing and position of the wiring harness for reinstallation.
Do not pull on wires - only pull on the connector bodies to avoid damaging the wiring harness
  5. 5
    Remove multifunction switch mounting screws
Using a T20 Torx driver, remove the screws securing the multifunction switch to the steering column (typically 2 screws on the left side of the column). Keep these screws in a safe location as they will be reused if the new switch does not include replacement hardware.
    Torque spec
    Connector Screws4 Nm (3 lb-ft)
  6. 6
    Remove multifunction switch assembly
Carefully slide the multifunction switch assembly away from the steering column. The switch slides on a track - pull it straight outward until it disengages from the column. Inspect the mounting points on the steering column for any damage or debris and clean if necessary.
ℹ️If the switch binds during removal, check for any overlooked fasteners - do not force it
  7. 7
    Prepare new multifunction switch
Remove the new multifunction switch from its packaging and compare it to the old switch to verify correct replacement. Check that all mounting points align and that the electrical connectors match. If the switch has a protective shipping lock or pin, remove it according to manufacturer instructions.
ℹ️Some replacement switches include a position lock that must be removed before installation - check instructions included with the part
  8. 8
    Install new multifunction switch
Align the new multifunction switch with the steering column mounting track. Ensure the switch is properly oriented with the turn signal lever pointing down and to the left. Slide the switch onto the column until it seats fully against the mounting surface. Verify it moves smoothly through all positions (turn signals, high beams, low beams).
Ensure the steering wheel remains centered and is not rotated during switch installation to maintain clockspring alignment
  9. 9
    Install mounting screws
Insert the T20 Torx mounting screws into the multifunction switch mounting holes. Thread them in by hand first to ensure proper engagement. Using a torque wrench, tighten the screws to specification in a cross pattern to ensure even seating of the switch.
    Torque spec
    Connector Screws4 Nm (3 lb-ft)
  10. 10
    Reconnect electrical connectors
Route the wiring harness connectors to the new multifunction switch following the same path as the original installation. Align each connector with its corresponding receptacle on the switch and push firmly until you hear and feel the locking tab engage. Gently tug on each connector to verify it is securely locked.
Ensure connectors are fully seated - partially connected switches can cause intermittent electrical faults and diagnostic codes
  11. 11
    Reinstall upper steering column cover
Position the upper steering column cover over the steering column, ensuring all wire routing clips are properly seated. Align the cover with the lower mounting points and press into place. Install the T20 Torx screws and tighten to specification.
    Torque spec
    Cover Screws12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
  12. 12
    Reinstall lower steering column cover
Align the lower steering column cover with the upper cover and the mounting points on the column. Press the cover into place, ensuring all trim clips engage properly. Install the T20 Torx screws and tighten to specification. Verify the cover is flush and secure around the entire perimeter.
    Torque spec
    Cover Screws12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
  13. 13
Reconnect battery and perform system test
Reconnect the negative battery terminal and tighten to specification. Do not overtighten as this can damage the terminal. Turn the ignition to the ON position (engine off) and test all multifunction switch operations: turn signals (left and right), hazard flashers, high beams, low beams, and flash-to-pass function. Verify dash indicators illuminate correctly for each function.
ℹ️Battery terminal bolts are intentionally low torque - do not exceed specification
    Torque spec
    Battery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all trim clips are fully engaged and steering column covers are flush with no gaps
  2. Verify all electrical connectors are locked and wiring is not pinched between covers
  3. Confirm battery terminal is tight but not overtightened per specification

Verification

  • With ignition ON, test turn signals in both directions and verify dash indicators and exterior lights function
  • Test high beam function by pulling the multifunction switch toward the steering wheel and verify high beam indicator illuminates
  • Test flash-to-pass function by pushing the switch forward gently without latching
  • Operate hazard flashers and verify all turn signals flash simultaneously
  • Test wiper controls (if integrated) to ensure full switch functionality
  • Start engine and verify no warning lights related to lighting system or SRS remain illuminated
  • Road test vehicle in safe conditions to confirm all functions work properly during operation
