This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the rear door lock actuator on a 2021-2024 Ford F-150 with 3.5L EcoBoost engine, requiring removal of the interior door panel and disconnecting electrical connections.
Warnings
⚠Disconnect battery negative terminal and wait 2 minutes before starting work to prevent airbag deployment or electrical shorts
⚠Door panel clips are fragile and break easily - use proper trim tools and work carefully
ℹ️Take photos of electrical connections before disconnecting to aid reassembly

Parts
- Rear door lock actuator assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Door panel retaining clips (if damaged) × 1 — Ford push-pin retainers
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 2 minutes
- Open rear door fully and secure in open position
- Lower rear window completely using manual override if necessary
- Protect door sill and surrounding areas with towels to prevent scratches
Procedure
- 1Remove door panel screwsRemove the T30 Torx screw from the door pull handle recess. Remove the screw behind the door release handle trim cover by prying the cover up gently. Remove any additional screws from the bottom edge of the door panel (typically 2-3 screws).
- 2Disconnect door handle cableReach behind the interior door handle and disconnect the door release cable by rotating the cable end counterclockwise and pulling it out of the handle mechanism. Set the cable aside to prevent interference.
- 3Remove door panelUsing a trim panel removal tool, carefully release the retaining clips around the perimeter of the door panel, starting from the bottom rear corner and working your way around. Lift the panel upward to disengage it from the window sill clips, then pull it away from the door frame. Rest the panel on a clean surface.⚠Work slowly and listen for clips releasing - forcing the panel can break clips or damage the panel
- 4Disconnect electrical connectorsDisconnect the power window switch connector and any other electrical connectors attached to the door panel by pressing the release tab and pulling straight out. Photograph connector locations before removal. Set the door panel completely aside.
- 5Peel back vapor barrierCarefully peel back the plastic vapor barrier only as much as needed to access the door lock actuator area. The actuator is typically located in the lower rear section of the door. Use masking tape to hold the barrier out of the way.ℹ️Keep the vapor barrier intact - tears will allow moisture into the door panel
- 6Disconnect actuator electrical connectorLocate the door lock actuator electrical connector inside the door cavity. Press the connector lock tab and disconnect the harness from the actuator. Move the harness out of the work area.
- 7Disconnect actuator control rodsIdentify the plastic control rods connected to the actuator (typically one for the latch mechanism and one for the lock cylinder). Disconnect each rod by releasing the plastic retaining clip and pulling the rod end off the actuator linkage. Note the orientation of each rod for reinstallation.⚠Control rod clips are fragile - use a flathead screwdriver carefully to release them without breaking
- 8Remove actuator mounting boltsRemove the three 7mm or 10mm bolts securing the door lock actuator to the door frame. Support the actuator with one hand while removing the final bolt to prevent it from falling into the door cavity.
- 9Remove actuator from doorCarefully maneuver the actuator out through the service opening in the door frame. You may need to rotate or tilt the actuator to clear internal door structures. Remove the actuator completely from the door.
- 10Install new actuatorPosition the new door lock actuator into the door cavity and align it with the mounting holes on the door frame. Install the three mounting bolts and tighten to 8.0 Nm (6.0 lb-ft) using a torque wrench. Ensure the actuator is properly seated against the door frame.Torque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 11Reconnect control rodsConnect the control rods to the new actuator in the same orientation as removed. Ensure each rod snaps firmly into place and the retaining clips are fully engaged. Manually test the actuator linkage movement to verify proper connection.
- 12Reconnect electrical connectorPlug the electrical connector into the new actuator until you hear and feel it click into place. Gently tug on the connection to verify it is secure.
- 13Reposition vapor barrierPress the vapor barrier back into position on the door frame, ensuring all edges are properly sealed. Check that no wires or rods are pinched behind the barrier.
- 14Reinstall door panelReconnect all electrical connectors to the door panel (power window switch, etc.). Reconnect the door release cable to the interior handle mechanism. Position the door panel onto the door frame, hooking the top edge over the window sill, then press firmly around the perimeter to engage all retaining clips. Reinstall all Torx screws and replace any trim covers.
- 15Reconnect battery and testReconnect the negative battery terminal and tighten to 6.0 Nm (4.0 lb-ft). Turn the ignition to ON position (engine off) and test the door lock operation using both the key fob and interior switch multiple times. Verify the actuator locks and unlocks smoothly with proper sound and feel.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Ensure all door panel clips are properly engaged before driving to prevent rattles
- Verify vapor barrier is completely sealed to prevent water intrusion
- Check that door release handle and power window switches function properly after panel installation
Verification
- Test door lock and unlock operation from key fob - should hear actuator engage clearly
- Test door lock and unlock from interior switch on all doors - rear door should respond correctly
- Manually pull interior and exterior door handles to ensure proper latch operation
- Verify no rattles or loose components when opening and closing the door
- Check that interior door panel is secure with no gaps or misalignment
