This procedure covers the inspection and replacement of rubber exhaust hangers on a 2021-2024 Ford F-150 with the 3.5L EcoBoost V6 engine, ensuring proper exhaust system support and preventing rattles or misalignment.
Warnings
⚠️Allow exhaust system to cool completely before starting work. Exhaust components can remain extremely hot for over an hour after engine shutdown and can cause severe burns.
⚠Do not work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always use properly rated jack stands on solid, level ground.
⚠Rubber hangers under tension can slip suddenly during removal or installation. Keep hands and face clear of the snap path.
ℹ️The 3.5L EcoBoost F-150 typically has 4-6 exhaust hangers from the catalytic converters to the tailpipe. Inspect all hangers even if replacing only damaged ones.

Parts
- Exhaust hanger rubber isolators × 4 — Use OEM specification
- Anti-seize compound × 1 — Copper or nickel-based
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level, solid ground and engage parking brake
- Place wheel chocks at front wheels
- Allow exhaust system to cool completely (minimum 1 hour after last engine operation)
- Raise rear of vehicle using floor jack at rear axle or frame lift points
- Support vehicle securely on jack stands rated for vehicle weight, positioned at manufacturer frame points
- Visually inspect entire exhaust system from underneath to identify which hangers need replacement
Procedure
- 1Locate and inspect exhaust hangersFrom underneath the vehicle, locate all exhaust hanger points. On the 2021-2024 F-150 3.5L EcoBoost RWD, hangers are typically located: one near the transmission crossmember supporting the mid-pipe, two supporting the muffler assembly, and one or two at the tailpipe. Check each rubber isolator for cracking, tearing, deterioration, or separation from the metal mounting points. Mark damaged hangers for replacement.
- 2Clean hanger mounting areasUse a wire brush to clean dirt and corrosion from the metal hanger hooks on both the exhaust pipe and vehicle frame mounting points. This will make removal and installation easier and allow better inspection of the metal components.
- 3Apply lubricant to first hangerSpray silicone lubricant or apply soapy water generously to the first rubber hanger to be replaced, coating both the exhaust-side hook and frame-side mounting stud. Allow lubricant to penetrate for 30-60 seconds. This significantly eases removal and installation.
- 4Remove old rubber hanger from exhaust hookUsing a pry bar or large flathead screwdriver, carefully pry the rubber isolator off the exhaust pipe hook. Work the pry bar between the rubber and the hook, applying steady pressure to stretch the rubber opening over the hook end. The hanger may be under tension, so control the pry bar to prevent sudden release. Once free from the exhaust hook, leave the hanger attached to the frame mount temporarily.
- 5Remove hanger from frame mountWhile supporting the exhaust pipe section with one hand to prevent it from dropping, use the pry bar to stretch the rubber isolator off the frame-mounted stud or hook. Pull the old hanger completely free. If the exhaust pipe drops slightly, this is normal - it will be repositioned during installation.
- 6Install new rubber hanger onto frame mountApply fresh lubricant to the new rubber hanger isolator. First, stretch the hanger opening over the frame-mounted stud or hook. Use the pry bar if needed to stretch the rubber, but avoid cutting or tearing the new part. Ensure the hanger is fully seated on the frame mount with the rubber sitting flush against any mounting collar.
- 7Install new hanger onto exhaust hookSupport the exhaust pipe and align it with the hanger position. The pipe may need to be lifted, lowered, or shifted laterally to align properly. Apply additional lubricant to the exhaust hook. Use the pry bar to stretch the rubber isolator opening over the exhaust pipe hook, working carefully to avoid tearing the new rubber. Ensure the hanger is fully seated on both the frame and exhaust hooks with the exhaust pipe hanging at the correct height and position.
- 8Repeat for remaining hangersRepeat steps 3-7 for each remaining damaged hanger. Work from front to rear or replace alternating hangers to maintain exhaust support throughout the process. Never remove multiple adjacent hangers simultaneously as this can cause the exhaust to drop excessively and strain remaining hangers or damage exhaust components.
- 9Check hanger bolts if applicableIf any exhaust hanger mounting bolts at the frame were loosened or removed during the procedure, verify they are reinstalled and torqued to specification. Apply anti-seize to bolt threads before installation.Torque specHanger Bolts23 Nm (17 lb-ft)
- 10Verify exhaust alignmentVisually inspect the entire exhaust system from underneath. Verify that pipes are centered in their respective tunnels and that there is adequate clearance (minimum 1 inch) between exhaust components and the vehicle body, frame, suspension components, fuel lines, and brake lines. Check that the tailpipe exits straight and is centered in the rear bumper cutout. Adjust exhaust position by manipulating pipes at the flexible hangers if needed.
Reassembly
- No disassembly was required for this procedure beyond hanger removal
- Ensure all new hangers are fully seated on both frame and exhaust mounting points
- Verify exhaust system has proper clearance from all surrounding components before lowering vehicle
Verification
- With vehicle still raised, firmly push and pull on exhaust pipes at multiple points to verify hangers are securely holding and not slipping off mounting points
- Check that exhaust system returns to center position after being displaced and does not contact body or frame components
- Lower vehicle from jack stands and remove wheel chocks
- Start engine and let idle while listening for any rattles, buzzing, or contact sounds that would indicate misaligned exhaust or improper hanger installation
- With engine running, have an assistant observe tailpipe from rear while you gently rev engine to 2000 RPM - excessive movement indicates failed or improperly installed hangers
- Take a short test drive over various road surfaces and listen for exhaust rattles or knocking sounds, particularly over bumps
