Parts
- Headlight switch assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Trim panel clips (if damaged) × 5 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key
- Open driver's door and leave open for access throughout procedure
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 2 minutes for airbag system capacitors to discharge
- Gather all necessary tools and parts before beginning
Procedure
- 1Disconnect battery negative terminalUsing a 10mm socket, loosen the negative battery terminal bolt. Remove the negative cable from the battery post and secure it away from the terminal to prevent accidental reconnection. Wait at least 2 minutes before proceeding to allow the supplemental restraint system (airbag) to fully discharge.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 2Remove lower dash trim panelLocate the lower dash trim panel on the driver's side below the steering column. Insert a panel removal tool at the bottom edge and carefully pry to release the retention clips. Work your way around the panel perimeter, releasing all clips. Once all clips are free, pull the panel away from the dash and set aside.
- 3Remove left side instrument panel end capOpen the driver's door fully. Locate the instrument panel end cap on the left side of the dash. Use a panel removal tool to carefully pry the end cap away from the dash, starting at the rear edge near the door opening. Release all retention clips and remove the end cap.
- 4Remove headlight switch bezelLocate the headlight switch bezel on the left side of the instrument panel. Using a trim removal tool, carefully pry around the edges of the bezel to release the retention clips. There are typically 4 clips securing the bezel. Once all clips are released, pull the bezel straight out approximately 2 inches to access the switch connector.
- 5Disconnect headlight switch electrical connectorWith the bezel pulled away from the dash, locate the electrical connector on the back of the headlight switch assembly. Press the locking tab on the connector while pulling it straight away from the switch. If equipped with multiple connectors, disconnect all connectors while noting their positions for reassembly.⚠Do not pull on wires; always grip the connector body to prevent damaging the wiring harness.
- 6Remove headlight switch mounting screwsWith the electrical connector(s) disconnected, locate the two mounting screws securing the headlight switch to the bezel or mounting bracket. These are typically located on the sides of the switch assembly. Remove both screws completely and set aside in a safe location.Torque specCover Screws12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
- 7Remove headlight switch assemblyWith the mounting screws removed, carefully pull the headlight switch assembly straight out from the bezel or mounting bracket. Remove the switch completely from the vehicle and inspect the mounting area for any damage or debris.
- 8Install new headlight switch assemblyPosition the new headlight switch assembly into the mounting bracket or bezel, aligning it properly with the mounting holes. Ensure the switch sits flush and is correctly oriented before installing fasteners.
- 9Install mounting screwsInsert both mounting screws into the headlight switch assembly. Using a torque wrench, tighten the screws to specification in a crosswise pattern to ensure even pressure. Do not overtighten as this may crack the switch housing.Torque specCover Screws12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
- 10Reconnect electrical connector(s)Connect the electrical connector(s) to the back of the new headlight switch assembly. Push each connector straight onto the switch terminals until you hear and feel a positive click, indicating the locking tab has engaged. Gently tug on each connector to verify it is fully seated.
- 11Reinstall headlight switch bezelPosition the headlight switch bezel back into the instrument panel opening. Align all retention clips with their mounting holes. Press firmly around the entire perimeter of the bezel until all clips snap into place and the bezel is flush with the surrounding dash surface.
- 12Reinstall instrument panel end cap and lower trimReinstall the left side instrument panel end cap by aligning the clips and pressing firmly until all clips engage. Reinstall the lower dash trim panel by aligning the clips and pressing firmly around the perimeter until all clips are fully seated.
- 13Reconnect battery negative terminalReconnect the negative battery cable to the negative battery post. Using a 10mm socket and torque wrench, tighten the battery terminal bolt to specification. Ensure the connection is secure but do not overtighten.⚠Do not overtighten battery terminal bolts as this can damage the battery post or terminal.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Verify all trim panels are securely fastened with no gaps or misalignment
- Check that all retention clips are properly engaged
- Ensure no tools or parts were left in the dash area
Verification
- Turn the ignition to the ON position without starting the engine
- Test all headlight switch positions: off, parking lights, headlights, and auto (if equipped)
- Verify instrument panel dimmer control functions properly through full range
- Test fog light switch operation if equipped
- Confirm dome light override function works correctly
- Verify dashboard illumination responds to dimmer control
- Check for any warning lights on the instrument cluster related to lighting systems
- Reset clock and radio presets as needed
- Test power window auto-up/down function and reinitialize if necessary by fully opening each window, then fully closing and holding the switch for 2 seconds
