This procedure covers the removal and replacement of the Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor on the 3.5L EcoBoost V6 engine, which monitors intake manifold pressure for engine management.
Warnings
⚠Allow engine to cool completely before beginning work to prevent burns from hot components
ℹ️The MAP sensor is a delicate electronic component - handle with care and avoid dropping or striking it
⚠Do not use excessive force when removing the electrical connector as the locking tab can break easily

Parts
- MAP Sensor × 1 — Use OEM Ford or quality aftermarket sensor
- MAP Sensor O-ring or seal (if separate) × 1 — Often included with sensor
Preparation
- Ensure engine is completely cool to the touch
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 2 minutes for electrical system to discharge
- Locate the MAP sensor on the intake manifold - it is typically mounted on the upper intake plenum with a single electrical connector
- Clean the area around the MAP sensor with compressed air to prevent debris from entering the intake manifold
Procedure
- 1Access the MAP SensorRemove the engine cover if equipped by pulling upward on the cover to release the grommets. On the 3.5L EcoBoost, the MAP sensor is located on the intake manifold, typically on the passenger side of the engine bay. You may need to move aside wiring harnesses or hoses for better access.
- 2Disconnect the Electrical ConnectorPress the locking tab on the MAP sensor electrical connector and carefully pull the connector straight off the sensor. Do not twist or rock the connector excessively. If the connector is stubborn, gently wiggle it while applying outward pressure. Inspect the connector pins for corrosion or damage.
- 3Remove the MAP Sensor Mounting HardwareLocate the one or two small screws securing the MAP sensor to the intake manifold. These are typically small Torx or hex head screws. Carefully remove the screws and set them aside in a safe location. Note the orientation of the sensor before removal.
- 4Extract the MAP SensorGently pull the MAP sensor straight out of the intake manifold. You may need to twist it slightly to break the seal. Be careful not to drop the sensor or allow any debris to fall into the open port in the intake manifold. If equipped with a separate O-ring seal, inspect it and replace if damaged, hardened, or missing.⚠Cover the open intake manifold port immediately with a clean lint-free cloth to prevent debris contamination
- 5Inspect Mounting Port and CleanExamine the MAP sensor mounting port in the intake manifold for debris, carbon buildup, or damage. Clean the area with electrical contact cleaner if needed, ensuring no cleaner enters the intake manifold. Remove the protective cloth from the port just before installing the new sensor.
- 6Install New MAP SensorInstall the new O-ring or seal on the MAP sensor if it is separate from the sensor body. Ensure it is properly seated in the sensor groove. Remove the protective cloth from the intake port. Carefully insert the new MAP sensor into the mounting port, aligning it with the same orientation as the original. Press it firmly into place until it seats completely.
- 7Secure the MAP SensorInstall the mounting screws and tighten them using an inch-pound torque wrench to the specified torque. Tighten in a crossing pattern if there are two screws. Do not over-tighten as this can crack the sensor housing or strip the threads in the intake manifold.Torque specMAP Sensor Screws3 Nm (2 lb-ft)
- 8Reconnect Electrical ConnectorPush the electrical connector firmly onto the MAP sensor until you hear or feel a distinct click indicating the locking tab has engaged. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is secure. Ensure the connector seal is properly seated to prevent moisture intrusion.
- 9Reinstall Engine Cover and BatteryReinstall the engine cover by aligning the grommets with the mounting posts and pressing down firmly until seated. Reconnect the negative battery terminal. The vehicle may need to complete a short drive cycle for the PCM to relearn sensor parameters.
Reassembly
- Ensure all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
- Verify no tools or parts are left in the engine compartment
- Double-check that the engine cover is properly installed if equipped
Verification
- Start the engine and verify it idles normally without rough running or stalling
- Check for any diagnostic trouble codes using an OBD-II scanner - clear any MAP sensor codes that may have been set previously
- Verify there are no vacuum leaks around the MAP sensor mounting location by listening for hissing sounds at idle
- Test drive the vehicle and verify normal acceleration and power delivery across the RPM range
- Re-scan for codes after test drive to confirm no MAP sensor-related codes return
