This procedure covers removal and replacement of the oil pan gasket on a 2021-2024 Ford F-150 with the 3.5L EcoBoost engine, requiring subframe lowering for access.

Warnings

⚠️Vehicle must be securely supported on jack stands rated for the vehicle weight. Never work under a vehicle supported only by a floor jack.
Engine and oil may be extremely hot. Allow engine to cool completely before beginning work.
Subframe must be properly supported before removing mounting bolts to prevent sudden dropping and injury.
ℹ️This procedure requires lowering the front subframe which affects suspension geometry. A post-repair alignment is recommended.

Fluids

  • Motorcraft 0W-20 Full Synthetic — 6 qt

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Allow engine to cool completely (minimum 2 hours after operation)
  3. Disconnect negative battery terminal
  4. Raise vehicle and support securely on jack stands at all four corners
  5. Remove front skid plate if equipped
  6. Remove engine under cover panels

Procedure

  1. 1
    Drain engine oil
Place drain pan under oil pan. Remove oil drain plug and allow oil to drain completely. Inspect drain plug threads and oil pan threads for damage. Install new crush washer on drain plug and reinstall drain plug.
    Torque spec
    Oil Drain Plug35 Nm (26 lb-ft)
  2. 2
Remove oil filter and level sensor
Remove oil filter and allow remaining oil to drain. Disconnect electrical connector from oil level sensor. Remove oil level sensor from oil pan using appropriate socket.
  3. 3
Support engine and remove motor mounts
Install engine support bar across fender aprons or attach engine hoist to lifting eyes on engine. Take up tension to support engine weight. Remove both front engine motor mount-to-subframe mounting bolts on each side.
⚠️Engine must be properly supported before removing motor mount bolts to prevent engine from shifting or falling.
  4. 4
Disconnect steering rack and sway bar
Remove steering rack mounting bolts from subframe but do not disconnect steering shaft or hydraulic lines. Support steering rack with wire or bungee cord. Disconnect sway bar end links from lower control arms on both sides.
  5. 5
    Support and lower front subframe
Position transmission jack or multiple adjustable jack stands under front subframe. Remove all subframe mounting bolts (typically 4 bolts). Slowly and evenly lower subframe approximately 3-4 inches to provide clearance for oil pan removal. Ensure all brake lines, fuel lines, and electrical harnesses have sufficient slack.
Lower subframe slowly and evenly. Check for any binding components or lines that may not have sufficient clearance.
  6. 6
    Remove oil pan bolts
Remove all oil pan mounting bolts working from the outside edges toward the center. Note bolt locations as some may be different lengths. Tap oil pan gently with rubber mallet if needed to break gasket seal. Carefully lower oil pan, being mindful of oil pickup tube.
    Torque spec
    Oil Pan Bolts12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
  7. 7
    Remove oil pickup tube
Remove oil pickup tube mounting bolts from engine block. Carefully pull pickup tube from engine block, noting O-ring location. Inspect O-ring for damage and replace if worn, cracked, or compressed.
  8. 8
    Clean gasket surfaces
Thoroughly clean all gasket material from oil pan and engine block mating surfaces using plastic gasket scraper. Do not gouge or scratch aluminum surfaces. Clean surfaces with brake cleaner and ensure completely dry. Inspect oil pan for cracks or damage, particularly around bolt holes.
Do not use metal scrapers on aluminum surfaces as gouges can cause oil leaks. Use only plastic or composite scrapers.
  9. 9
Install new gasket and oil pickup tube
Install new O-ring on oil pickup tube, lightly lubricating with clean engine oil. Carefully insert pickup tube into engine block and install mounting bolts. Position new oil pan gasket on oil pan, ensuring all bolt holes align properly. Some gaskets may have adhesive backing or may require a light bead of RTV at block corners if specified by gasket manufacturer.
  10. 10
    Install oil pan
Carefully raise oil pan into position, guiding around oil pickup tube. Start all oil pan bolts by hand, ensuring gasket remains properly positioned. Tighten oil pan bolts to specification in sequence from center outward in a star pattern to ensure even gasket compression.
ℹ️Follow proper tightening sequence from center outward to prevent gasket distortion and ensure proper sealing.
    Torque spec
    Oil Pan Bolts12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
  11. 11
Raise subframe and reinstall mounting bolts
Raise front subframe back into position using transmission jack, ensuring proper alignment with all mounting points. Install all subframe mounting bolts and torque to specification. Reconnect sway bar end links and steering rack mounting bolts.
  12. 12
Reinstall motor mounts and remove engine support
Install motor mount-to-subframe mounting bolts on both sides and torque to specification. Carefully remove engine support bar or hoist.
  13. 13
Install oil level sensor and fill with oil
Install oil level sensor with new seal if required and torque to specification. Reconnect electrical connector. Install new oil filter. Fill engine with 6 quarts of Motorcraft 0W-20 full synthetic oil.

Reassembly

  1. Reinstall engine under covers and skid plate if equipped
  2. Lower vehicle from jack stands
  3. Reconnect negative battery terminal
  4. Double-check that all bolts are tightened and all connections are secure

Verification

  • Start engine and allow to idle for 2-3 minutes while monitoring for leaks around oil pan gasket
  • Check oil level on dipstick and add oil if necessary to reach full mark
  • Turn off engine and wait 5 minutes, then recheck oil level and inspect entire oil pan perimeter for any seepage
  • Test drive vehicle and recheck for leaks after reaching operating temperature
  • Monitor oil level over next few days to ensure no consumption from leaks
