Replace the electronic parking brake actuator motor assembly on the rear brake caliper to restore parking brake function.
Warnings
⚠️SAFETY-CRITICAL REPAIR: Parking brake failure can cause vehicle rollaway resulting in death or serious injury. If you are uncertain about any step, have this repair performed by a qualified technician.
⚠️Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always use properly rated jack stands on solid, level ground.
⚠️Brake fluid is toxic and damages paint. Avoid skin contact and immediately clean any spills.
⚠Electronic parking brake must be placed in service mode before removal. Failure to do so can damage the actuator or caliper assembly.
⚠Do not press brake pedal while caliper is removed or partially disassembled.
ℹ️This procedure is for the rear parking brake actuator. The 2021-2024 F-150 uses an integrated electronic parking brake system on the rear calipers.

Parts
- Parking brake actuator motor assembly × 1 — Use OEM Ford specification
- Actuator mounting bolts (if not included with actuator) × 1 — Use OEM specification
- Brake fluid × 1 — DOT 4 LV
Fluids
- Motorcraft DOT 4 LV Brake Fluid — 0.5 qt
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level ground and engage transmission park
- Place wheel chocks in front of front wheels
- Connect scan tool to OBD-II port and turn ignition to ON position (engine off)
- Using scan tool, navigate to parking brake service mode and retract the parking brake actuator pistons fully (this releases tension on the parking brake mechanism)
- Verify parking brake is in service/retracted mode before proceeding
- Loosen rear wheel lug nuts while vehicle is on ground (do not remove)
- Raise rear of vehicle with floor jack and secure on jack stands at manufacturer-specified lift points
- Remove rear wheel on side being serviced
Procedure
- 1Disconnect battery negative terminalDisconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical issues during actuator replacement. Wait 2 minutes for system capacitors to discharge before proceeding.
- 2Access rear brake caliperInspect the rear brake caliper and locate the electronic parking brake actuator motor mounted on the back of the caliper assembly. Clean the area around the actuator with brake cleaner to remove dirt and debris.
- 3Disconnect actuator electrical connectorLocate the electrical connector on the parking brake actuator motor. Press the locking tab and carefully disconnect the wiring harness connector from the actuator. Secure the harness away from work area to prevent damage.
- 4Remove actuator mounting boltsRemove the mounting bolts securing the parking brake actuator motor to the rear caliper housing. These are typically Torx-head bolts. Keep track of any washers or spacers. The actuator may have internal spring tension; control removal carefully.⚠Actuator contains internal spring mechanism. Control the unit as you remove the final bolt to prevent it from dropping or releasing suddenly.Torque specMounting Bolts31 Nm (23 lb-ft)
- 5Remove old parking brake actuatorCarefully pull the parking brake actuator straight away from the caliper housing. The actuator shaft engages with the caliper piston mechanism; it may require slight rotation while pulling to disengage. Note the orientation and position for installation of the new unit.
- 6Inspect caliper piston mechanismWith actuator removed, inspect the exposed caliper piston and spindle mechanism for damage, corrosion, or debris. Clean the mating surface on the caliper housing with brake cleaner. Verify the piston spindle rotates smoothly by hand. If piston mechanism is damaged, caliper replacement may be required.⚠Do not allow dirt or debris to enter the caliper piston mechanism. Contamination will cause parking brake malfunction.
- 7Prepare new parking brake actuatorUnpack the new parking brake actuator. Verify it is in the fully retracted position (shaft pulled in). If necessary, use scan tool to retract the new actuator before installation. Check that the actuator shaft splines are clean and undamaged. Apply a thin coat of appropriate brake-compatible grease to the actuator shaft splines if specified by manufacturer.
- 8Install new actuatorAlign the new parking brake actuator shaft with the caliper piston spindle mechanism. Carefully push the actuator into position while ensuring the shaft splines engage correctly with the piston mechanism. The actuator should seat flush against the caliper housing mounting surface. Do not force; if resistance is felt, remove and verify alignment.
- 9Install and torque actuator mounting boltsInstall the actuator mounting bolts with any washers or spacers in their original positions. Tighten bolts evenly in a cross pattern to prevent binding. Torque mounting bolts to specification using a calibrated torque wrench.Torque specMounting Bolts31 Nm (23 lb-ft)
- 10Reconnect electrical connectorReconnect the wiring harness electrical connector to the new parking brake actuator motor. Ensure the connector locks fully with an audible click. Verify the connector is secure by gently pulling on it.
- 11Reconnect battery and exit service modeReconnect the negative battery terminal. Turn ignition to ON position. Using the scan tool, exit parking brake service mode. The system will perform an initialization sequence and restore normal parking brake function. Monitor scan tool for any fault codes.⚠Do not attempt to drive vehicle while parking brake is in service mode. Always exit service mode using scan tool before operating vehicle.
- 12Reinstall wheel and lower vehicleReinstall the rear wheel. Hand-tighten lug nuts in a star pattern. Lower vehicle until tire just contacts ground (weight not fully on tire). Torque lug nuts to specification in star pattern. Fully lower vehicle and remove jack stands and floor jack.Torque specWheel Lug Nuts140 Nm (103 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Ensure all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
- Verify no tools or parts are left in wheel well area
- Check brake fluid level in master cylinder reservoir and top off with DOT 4 LV fluid if needed
- Remove wheel chocks from front wheels
Verification
- With vehicle in park on level ground, press brake pedal several times to verify normal brake pedal feel
- Using scan tool or vehicle controls, apply electronic parking brake and verify actuator operates smoothly without unusual noise
- Verify parking brake indicator light illuminates on instrument cluster when parking brake is applied
- Release parking brake using vehicle controls and verify indicator light extinguishes
- Perform parking brake hold test: With parking brake applied on level ground, shift to neutral and verify vehicle does not roll
- Test drive vehicle at low speed in safe area and verify normal brake operation and parking brake function
- Using scan tool, verify no parking brake fault codes are present in vehicle systems
- If any unusual operation, noise, or fault codes are present, do not operate vehicle and consult a qualified technician
