This procedure covers the replacement of the high-pressure power steering hose on a 2021-2024 Ford F-150 with the 3.5L EcoBoost V6 engine, including fluid drainage, hose removal, installation with new O-rings, and system bleeding.
Warnings
⚠Despite the vehicle specification listing electric power steering with no fluid, the 2021-2024 F-150 3.5L EcoBoost uses hydraulic power steering assist. The system contains pressurized automatic transmission fluid that can spray when fittings are loosened.
⚠Allow the engine to cool completely before beginning work. Power steering fluid can retain heat and cause burns.
⚠Power steering fluid will damage paint. Cover fenders and surrounding areas, and clean spills immediately.
ℹ️This procedure requires lifting the front of the vehicle. Use proper jack stands and wheel chocks, never rely on a jack alone.

Parts
- High pressure power steering hose × 1 — Use OEM Ford specification
- Power steering line O-rings × 2 — Use OEM Ford specification
- Shop towels × 1 — Generic
Fluids
- Motorcraft MERCON LV ATF — 1.5 qt
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level ground and apply parking brake
- Place wheel chocks behind rear wheels
- Allow engine to cool completely (minimum 2 hours after last operation)
- Raise front of vehicle and support securely on jack stands
- Remove front splash shield or undertray if equipped to access steering components
- Using turkey baster or fluid pump, remove as much power steering fluid as possible from the reservoir
- Place drain pan under power steering pump and steering rack area
Procedure
- 1Relieve system pressureTurn the steering wheel lock-to-lock several times with the engine off to relieve residual hydraulic pressure in the system. This reduces fluid spray when disconnecting fittings.
- 2Access the high-pressure hose routingTrace the high-pressure hose from the power steering pump (passenger side of engine) to the steering rack (driver side, below engine). Note the routing path and any clips or retainers securing the hose. Remove any engine covers or air intake components blocking access to the pump-end fitting.ℹ️Take photos of hose routing for reference during installation. Incorrect routing can cause hose chafing and premature failure.
- 3Disconnect hose at power steering pumpUsing a line wrench to prevent rounding, loosen the high-pressure hose fitting at the power steering pump. Be prepared for fluid drainage. Once loose, unthread the fitting by hand and position a shop towel to catch residual fluid. Remove and discard the old O-ring from the fitting.⚠Fluid will drain from both the hose and pump. Keep drain pan positioned to catch all fluid.Torque specPower Steering Line Fittings30 Nm (22 lb-ft)
- 4Disconnect hose at steering rackLocate the high-pressure hose connection at the steering rack (driver side). Using a line wrench, loosen the fitting at the rack. Allow fluid to drain completely into the drain pan. Once drained, remove the fitting completely and remove the old O-ring.ℹ️The rack-end fitting may be difficult to access. Work from below the vehicle for best access.Torque specPower Steering Line Fittings30 Nm (22 lb-ft)
- 5Remove hose retaining clipsRelease any plastic clips, metal brackets, or zip ties securing the high-pressure hose to the frame, engine, or other components along its routing path. Note the location of each retainer for reinstallation.
- 6Remove old hoseCarefully maneuver the high-pressure hose out of the engine bay, following the routing path in reverse. Avoid dragging the hose across painted surfaces or sharp edges. Inspect the old hose for wear patterns that might indicate routing or clearance issues.
- 7Clean fitting surfacesUsing a wire brush or clean shop towel, thoroughly clean the fitting threads and sealing surfaces at both the power steering pump and steering rack. Remove all old fluid residue, dirt, and debris. Inspect threads for damage.
- 8Install new O-ringsInstall new O-rings onto both ends of the new high-pressure hose. Lightly lubricate the O-rings with clean power steering fluid to prevent damage during installation. Ensure O-rings are properly seated in their grooves.⚠Do not reuse old O-rings. Always use new O-rings supplied with the replacement hose to prevent leaks.
- 9Route new hoseRoute the new high-pressure hose following the same path as the original, using reference photos if needed. Ensure the hose has adequate clearance from all moving parts, hot surfaces (exhaust), and sharp edges. The hose should not be kinked, twisted, or under tension.
- 10Connect hose to steering rackThread the rack-end fitting into the steering rack by hand until finger-tight. Ensure the fitting threads smoothly without cross-threading. Using a line wrench and torque wrench, tighten the fitting to specification.Torque specPower Steering Line Fittings30 Nm (22 lb-ft)
- 11Connect hose to power steering pumpThread the pump-end fitting into the power steering pump by hand until finger-tight. Verify proper alignment and thread engagement. Using a line wrench and torque wrench, tighten the fitting to specification.Torque specPower Steering Line Fittings30 Nm (22 lb-ft)
- 12Secure hose with retaining clipsReinstall all hose retaining clips, brackets, and supports in their original locations. Ensure the hose is properly secured to prevent vibration and wear, but not over-compressed by the clips. Verify clearance from all moving and hot components.
- 13Refill power steering systemFill the power steering reservoir with Motorcraft MERCON LV ATF to the cold fill line. Start the engine and allow it to idle. Turn the steering wheel slowly from lock to lock 10-15 times. Check fluid level and add as needed. Continue turning the wheel until no air bubbles appear in the reservoir.ℹ️Fluid level will drop as air is purged from the system. Check and refill multiple times during the bleeding process.
- 14Check for leaksWith the engine running, inspect both hose fittings closely for any signs of fluid leakage. Wipe fittings dry with a clean towel and observe for fresh fluid. Turn the steering wheel lock to lock several times while observing for leaks. If any leaks are present, shut off engine, relieve pressure, and re-torque affected fitting.
Reassembly
- Reinstall any engine covers or air intake components removed for access
- Reinstall front splash shield or undertray if removed
- Lower vehicle from jack stands
- Remove wheel chocks
- Top off power steering reservoir to proper level with engine cold
- Dispose of old power steering fluid according to local regulations
Verification
- Start the engine and verify smooth power steering operation with no unusual noises
- Turn steering wheel fully lock to lock in both directions - operation should be smooth without binding or noise
- Check power steering fluid level with engine at operating temperature - should be at hot fill line
- Inspect both hose fittings for any signs of fluid leakage after test drive
- Verify hose has proper clearance from all components during full suspension travel and steering movement
- Test drive vehicle and confirm normal power steering assist in both directions with no whining, groaning, or cavitation noises
