Parts
- Transmission shift cable assembly × 1 — Use OEM Ford specification
- Shift cable grommet (firewall) × 1 — Often included with cable
- Cable retaining clips × 2 — Often included with cable
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Ensure shifter is in PARK position
- Disconnect negative battery cable and wait 2 minutes for airbag system to discharge
- Raise front of vehicle and support on jack stands
- Allow engine and transmission to cool completely
Procedure
- 1Remove center console lower panelRemove the lower center console panel surrounding the shift lever. Remove the cover screws securing the console trim panel. Carefully pry the panel free using trim tools, working around the perimeter to release all retaining clips. Disconnect any electrical connectors for USB ports or accessories if present.Torque specCover Screws12 Nm (9 lb-ft)
- 2Access shift cable at shifter assemblyLocate the shift cable connection at the base of the shifter assembly. Using needle nose pliers, compress the cable locking tab and slide the cable end off the shifter ball stud. Note the routing and orientation of the cable for installation reference. Take a photo if possible.⚠The plastic cable end fitting is fragile - do not pry or force it off the ball stud
- 3Remove cable bracket at shifterRemove the cable bracket bolts securing the shift cable bracket to the shifter assembly using a 10mm socket. Pull the cable housing free from the bracket. Note the cable routing through the floor pan and toward the firewall.Torque specCable Bracket Bolts15 Nm (11 lb-ft)
- 4Remove firewall grommetFrom inside the cabin, locate where the shift cable passes through the firewall. Using a flat blade screwdriver, carefully pry the rubber grommet and cable through the firewall from inside the vehicle. Push the cable assembly toward the engine bay.ℹ️Mark the grommet orientation before removal to ensure proper sealing on reinstallation
- 5Access transmission shift cable connection from underneathWorking from underneath the vehicle with proper lighting, locate the shift cable where it connects to the transmission shift lever on the driver's side of the transmission. Clean the area around the cable connection to identify the cable end and bracket mounting points.
- 6Disconnect cable from transmission leverUsing needle nose pliers or a small flat blade screwdriver, compress the cable end retaining clip and slide the cable end off the transmission shift lever ball stud. Note the position of the shift lever for reassembly reference.
- 7Remove cable bracket at transmissionRemove the cable bracket bolts securing the shift cable bracket to the transmission using a 10mm socket. There are typically two bolts holding the bracket. Pull the cable housing free from the bracket.Torque specCable Bracket Bolts15 Nm (11 lb-ft)
- 8Remove old shift cableTrace the cable routing from transmission to firewall, noting how it is secured with clips along the frame rail or transmission crossmember. Remove any cable routing clips or ties. Pull the entire cable assembly free from the vehicle through the engine bay, noting the complete routing path for new cable installation.
- 9Install new shift cable at transmissionRoute the new shift cable from the engine bay along the same path as the old cable, securing it with routing clips. Install the cable housing into the transmission bracket and secure with cable bracket bolts. Ensure the cable is properly seated in the bracket before tightening. Connect the cable end to the transmission shift lever ball stud, ensuring the retaining clip locks into place with an audible click.Torque specCable Bracket Bolts15 Nm (11 lb-ft)
- 10Route cable through firewallFrom the engine bay, feed the shift cable through the firewall opening. Install the rubber grommet into the firewall, ensuring it is fully seated and properly oriented to seal against weather and noise. Pull excess cable into the cabin.
- 11Connect cable to shifter assemblyRoute the cable to the shifter assembly following the original path. Install the cable housing into the shifter bracket and secure with cable bracket bolts. Connect the cable end to the shifter ball stud, ensuring the retaining clip engages fully.Torque specCable Bracket Bolts15 Nm (11 lb-ft)
- 12Adjust shift cableWith the transmission shift lever in PARK position (fully rearward), move the shifter inside the vehicle to PARK position. Locate the adjustment nut on the cable at the transmission end. Loosen the adjustment nut, ensure the cable housing is seated properly, then tighten to specification while holding the cable in position.ℹ️Proper adjustment is critical for correct gear engagement and starting safetyTorque specAdjustment Nut10 Nm (7 lb-ft)
- 13Verify shift operationBefore reinstalling console panels, cycle the shifter through all gear positions (P-R-N-D-L) multiple times. Verify that each gear position on the shifter corresponds to the correct position at the transmission lever. Check that the shifter returns to PARK fully and that the key can be removed only in PARK. Adjust if necessary using the adjustment nut.
Reassembly
- Reinstall center console lower panel and secure with cover screws to specification
- Reconnect any electrical connectors for console accessories
- Reconnect negative battery cable
- Lower vehicle from jack stands
Verification
- With brake pedal depressed and engine running, shift through all gear positions - each position should engage smoothly without binding
- Verify engine will only start in PARK and NEUTRAL positions
- Verify ignition key can only be removed when shifter is in PARK position
- Check that transmission position indicator on dash matches shifter position in all gears
- Test drive vehicle to confirm proper gear engagement and no slipping or delayed shifts
- Inspect firewall grommet for proper sealing with no visible gaps
