Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and turn off ignition
- Engage parking brake
- Allow tail lights to cool if recently operated
- Open tailgate for easier access to tail light assembly
Procedure
- 1Access tail light assemblyFrom inside the bed near the tailgate, locate the tail light assembly access panel on the inner bed wall. The panel is typically a small rectangular cover behind the tail light location.
- 2Remove access panelRemove the access panel cover by turning the plastic fasteners counterclockwise or removing retaining screws if equipped. Carefully pull the panel away to expose the back of the tail light assembly.
- 3Locate turn signal bulb socketIdentify the turn signal bulb socket at the rear of the tail light assembly. The turn signal is typically the amber-colored bulb socket, usually located in the middle or upper portion of the assembly. Refer to the lens markings on the outside if needed.
- 4Remove bulb socketGrasp the bulb socket firmly and rotate it counterclockwise approximately 1/4 turn (90 degrees) until it releases from the housing. Pull the socket straight out from the tail light assembly.
- 5Remove failed bulbPress the bulb gently into the socket while turning counterclockwise to release it from the bayonet-style mount, or pull straight out if it's a wedge-type bulb. Inspect the socket for any corrosion or damage.
- 6Install new bulbUsing a clean cloth or gloves, handle the new bulb only by its base. Insert the new bulb into the socket and press in while turning clockwise until it locks (bayonet style), or push firmly until seated (wedge style). Ensure the bulb is secure in the socket.
- 7Test bulb operationBefore reinstalling the socket, have an assistant turn on the ignition and activate the turn signal to verify the new bulb illuminates properly. Check both turn signal and hazard light functions.
- 8Reinstall bulb socketAlign the socket tabs with the slots in the tail light housing. Insert the socket fully and rotate clockwise approximately 1/4 turn until it locks into place. Tug gently to confirm it's secured.
- 9Replace access panelPosition the access panel back into place and secure with fasteners by turning clockwise or installing screws. Ensure the panel is flush and fully seated.
Reassembly
- Ensure all fasteners on the access panel are properly secured
- Close tailgate and verify it operates normally
Verification
- Turn ignition to ON position and activate both left and right turn signals to confirm proper operation
- Test hazard lights to verify all functions work correctly
- Walk around vehicle to visually confirm the turn signal flashes at normal speed with proper brightness
- Check for any warning lights on the instrument cluster indicating bulb failure
