This procedure covers removal and replacement of the front door window motor and regulator assembly on 2021-2024 Ford F-150 trucks with the 3.5L EcoBoost V6 engine.

Warnings

Disconnect battery negative terminal before beginning work to prevent power window system damage and ensure safety during electrical work
Support the window glass securely before disconnecting regulator to prevent glass from falling and breaking
ℹ️Do not slam door with window motor disconnected as unsupported glass can shatter

Parts

  • Window regulator and motor assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification or Motorcraft part
  • Door panel retaining clips × 1 — Replace any broken clips
  • Vapor barrier adhesive × 1 — If barrier is damaged during removal

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 2 minutes for system capacitors to discharge
  3. Roll window to approximately half-way position before disconnecting battery if motor is functional
  4. Gather all tools and new parts for installation
  5. Inspect new regulator assembly to verify correct part before starting disassembly

Procedure

  1. 1
    Disconnect battery
Disconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm socket. Wait at least 2 minutes before proceeding to allow all electrical system capacitors to fully discharge.
    Torque spec
    Battery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
  2. 2
    Remove door panel
Remove the door pull handle cover by prying gently with trim tool. Remove two Torx T30 screws behind the handle. Remove the power window/lock switch panel by prying up from rear edge, then disconnect electrical connector. Remove door panel perimeter clips using trim removal tool, working around entire edge. Lift panel up and away from door frame to disengage from window sill.
  3. 3
    Remove vapor barrier access
Carefully peel back the plastic vapor barrier to access the window regulator mounting area. Use caution to avoid tearing the barrier - only remove enough to access regulator bolts and electrical connector. If barrier tears, replacement adhesive will be needed during reassembly.
  4. 4
    Secure window glass
If window is still operational, roll window all the way up. Once at full up position, use power window tape or duct tape to secure the window glass to the door frame by taping across the top of the glass to the exterior door frame. This prevents glass from falling when regulator is disconnected. If motor is inoperative, manually slide glass to full up position before taping.
  5. 5
    Disconnect window motor electrical connector
Locate the window motor electrical connector inside the door cavity. Press the connector release tab and carefully disconnect the harness from the window motor. Move wiring harness away from work area.
  6. 6
    Separate glass from regulator
Locate the two 10mm bolts that attach the window glass channel to the regulator lift mechanism (usually visible through access holes in door frame). Remove these bolts and carefully separate the glass from the regulator. Ensure glass remains secured by tape to door frame.
  7. 7
    Remove regulator mounting bolts
Locate all regulator mounting bolts (typically 4-6 bolts around the regulator assembly). Remove the 10mm regulator mounting bolts. Note the position and orientation of the regulator for proper installation of replacement unit.
    Torque spec
    Module Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
  8. 8
    Extract regulator assembly
Carefully maneuver the window regulator and motor assembly out through the large access opening in the door frame. The assembly may need to be rotated and angled to clear the door structure. Work slowly to avoid damaging wiring harness or vapor barrier.
  9. 9
    Install new regulator assembly
Position the new window regulator and motor assembly inside the door cavity. Align the regulator mounting holes with the door frame mounting points. Ensure the motor is oriented correctly with electrical connector accessible and regulator arms are not twisted or bound.
  10. 10
    Install regulator mounting bolts
Install all regulator mounting bolts finger-tight first to ensure proper alignment. Once all bolts are started, torque mounting bolts to specification in a cross pattern to ensure even seating of the regulator against door frame.
    Torque spec
    Module Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
  11. 11
    Attach glass to regulator
Remove tape securing glass to door frame. Lower glass carefully into door and align the glass channel with the regulator lift mechanism mounting points. Install the two 10mm glass-to-regulator attachment bolts and tighten securely but do not overtighten as this can crack the glass channel.
  12. 12
    Connect electrical and test
Connect the electrical connector to the window motor ensuring it clicks fully into place. Temporarily reconnect the battery negative terminal. Test window operation through full up and down travel before completing reassembly. Verify smooth operation with no binding or unusual noise. If operation is not smooth, check regulator alignment and glass attachment. Disconnect battery again before final reassembly.
    Torque spec
    Battery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
  13. 13
Reinstall vapor barrier and door panel
Reposition the vapor barrier and press adhesive edges firmly to door frame. Apply new adhesive if barrier was torn. Position door panel onto door by engaging top edge onto window sill first, then pressing firmly around perimeter to engage all retaining clips. Replace any broken clips. Install door pull handle screws and covers. Reconnect power window/lock switch connector and snap switch panel into place.
  14. 14
    Final battery connection
Reconnect the negative battery terminal and torque to specification. Do not overtighten as this can damage the battery terminal.
    Torque spec
    Battery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all door panel clips are properly seated and panel is flush with door frame
  2. Verify vapor barrier is completely sealed to prevent moisture intrusion into door cavity
  3. Check that all interior trim pieces and switches are properly reinstalled and functional
  4. If power window auto-up/auto-down feature does not work after replacement, perform window relearn procedure per Ford service manual

Verification

  • Test window operation through full travel multiple times to verify smooth operation with no binding or noise
  • Verify window seals properly against weatherstripping at full up position
  • Check that auto-up and auto-down functions work correctly (perform relearn if necessary)
  • Verify window stops correctly at full up and full down positions without overtravel
  • Ensure door panel is secure with no rattles or loose clips
  • Confirm all power window and lock switches operate correctly
