The 2012 GMC Yukon on the GMT900 platform is generally solid, but suffers from two expensive catastrophic issues: Active Fuel Management (AFM) lifter failure causing engine damage, and transmission oil cooler line leaks that cross-contaminate coolant and ATF, destroying the transmission.
AFM Lifter Collapse / Piston Ring Failure (5.3L V8)
Common · high severity
Typical onset: 80,000-150,000 mi
Symptoms: Ticking/tapping noise from engine at idle, especially on cold start, Check engine light with P0300-series misfire codes or P0521 oil pressure, Excessive oil consumption (1 qt per 1,000 miles or worse), Metal shavings in oil, valve train damage visible on lifter bores
Fix: AFM lifters fail due to oil pressure loss in the AFM system, causing collapsed lifters that chew up cam lobes. Often leads to secondary damage: wiped cam, scored cylinders, cracked pistons. Proper fix is AFM delete kit with new lifters, cam, and sometimes piston rings or full shortblock. Figure 18-30 labor hours for engine-out rebuild if pistons are damaged. Many owners disable AFM preemptively with a Range disable device.
Estimated cost: $3,500-8,500
Transmission Oil Cooler Line Leaks (Coolant/ATF Cross-Contamination)
Common · high severity
Typical onset: 60,000-120,000 mi
Symptoms: Pink or milky fluid in coolant overflow tank (ATF in coolant), Transmission slipping, delayed shifts, or complete failure, Chocolate milk appearance in transmission pan (coolant in ATF), Coolant loss with no external leaks visible
Fix: The steel cooler lines at the radiator corrode and rupture, allowing pressurized coolant to enter the transmission through the internal cooler. Once mixed, transmission is toast—clutches swell and fail. Requires new radiator, cooler lines, transmission flush or rebuild (usually rebuild), and cooling system flush. If caught early (just lines leaking), replace lines and external cooler immediately. Labor: 2-4 hours for lines, 12-18 for transmission rebuild.
Estimated cost: $500-6,000
Valve Cover Gasket / PCV System Oil Leaks
Common · low severity
Typical onset: 70,000-130,000 mi
Symptoms: Oil residue on top of engine, visible on valve covers, Burning oil smell from exhaust manifolds, Oil dripping onto exhaust or crossmember, Low oil level between changes
Fix: The rubber valve cover gaskets harden and shrink, leaking at the front and rear. The integrated PCV system in the covers also clogs, increasing crankcase pressure and worsening leaks. Replace both valve covers (they come with gaskets integrated) and check PCV hoses. 2.5-3.5 labor hours for both sides.
Estimated cost: $600-1,000
Transfer Case Pump Rub / Fluid Leak (4WD models)
Occasional · medium severity
Typical onset: 90,000-140,000 mi
Symptoms: Transfer case fluid leak from rear output seal or front pump area, Grinding or whining noise in 4WD operation, Service 4WD message on dash, Difficulty engaging 4WD modes
Fix: The NVG 246 or MP 1626 transfer cases can develop pump rub (internal wear) or output seal leaks. Seal replacement is 2-3 hours, but internal pump wear requires rebuild or replacement (8-10 hours). Check fluid level regularly; many run low and overheat internally. Reman transfer case is often more cost-effective than rebuild.
Estimated cost: $400-3,200
Front Differential Bearing Failure (4WD models)
Occasional · medium severity
Typical onset: 100,000-160,000 mi
Symptoms: Howling or droning noise from front end, speed-dependent, Noise changes pitch in turns, Vibration at highway speeds, Metal shavings in front differential fluid
Fix: The front AAM 9.25" differential bearings (carrier and pinion) wear due to inadequate fluid changes or heavy loads. Requires differential disassembly, new bearings, and setup with shims. Labor: 5-7 hours. If caught late, ring and pinion may also need replacement. Preventive fluid changes every 30k miles help.
Estimated cost: $1,200-2,500
Steering Shaft Clunk / Intermediate Shaft
Common · low severity
Typical onset: 50,000-100,000 mi
Symptoms: Clunk or knock when turning at low speeds or parking lot maneuvers, Felt through steering wheel, sounds like it's coming from column, More pronounced in cold weather or after sitting
Fix: The intermediate steering shaft U-joints wear and develop slop. GM released an updated shaft assembly with improved joints and grease seals. Replace entire intermediate shaft. 1.5-2 hours labor. Some techs try injecting grease as a temporary fix, but replacement is the real cure.
Estimated cost: $300-500
Evaporator Core Leak (A/C)
Occasional · medium severity
Typical onset: 70,000-120,000 mi
Symptoms: A/C blows warm after working fine, Refrigerant needs constant recharging, Oily residue on passenger floor or under dash, Sweet smell from vents
Fix: The evaporator core corrodes and leaks refrigerant inside the HVAC case. Requires complete dash removal to access—massive job. Figure 10-14 labor hours. New evaporator, drier, expansion valve, full system flush, and recharge. Some owners live with recharging annually to avoid the repair cost.
Estimated cost: $1,800-3,000
Owner tips
Disable AFM with a Range device or tuner as preventive maintenance—costs $150-300 and saves thousands in engine repairs
Replace transmission cooler lines and install external auxiliary cooler BEFORE they leak—cheap insurance at $400-600
Change transmission fluid every 50k miles (GM says lifetime, but it's not), front/rear diff every 30k
Use 0W-20 synthetic oil (upgraded spec for 5.3L) and change every 5,000 miles if AFM is still active
Buy one if the AFM has been deleted or if you're handy enough to do it yourself immediately; otherwise, the engine and transmission are ticking time bombs that will cost more than the truck's worth to fix.

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2011-2012 Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV, Escalade EXT, Chevrolet Avalanche, Silverado HD, Silverado LD, Suburban, Tahoe, GMC Sierra LD, Sierra HD, Yukon, and Yukon XL vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the ignition lock actuator may bind, making turning the key difficult or causing the ignition to get stuck in the "Start" position.
Consequence: If stuck in the "Start" position, the ignition may suddenly snap back into the "Accessory" position, causing a loss of engine, steering, and braking power, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash. If the vehicle is in a crash, the air bags may not deploy, increasing the risk of occupant injury.
Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the ignition lock housing, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on February 12, 2015. Owners may contact GM customer service at 1-800-458-8006 (Cadillac), 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet), or 1-800-462-8782 (GMC).
