This procedure covers the replacement of the dimmer switch (wiper/washer stalk assembly) on the steering column of a 2018-2024 Honda Accord with the 1.5L turbo engine.

Warnings

Disconnecting the battery will erase radio presets and may require window and sunroof re-initialization after repair.
Do not use metal tools near airbag connectors or SRS components. The dimmer switch is part of the steering column assembly which includes airbag wiring.
ℹ️Ensure the steering wheel is centered and locked before beginning work to prevent damage to the clockspring.

Parts

  • Dimmer switch assembly (wiper/washer stalk) × 1 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
  2. Turn ignition off and remove key/fob from vehicle
  3. Allow vehicle to sit for at least 3 minutes to discharge airbag system capacitors
  4. Open hood and disconnect negative battery terminal using 10mm socket
  5. Wait an additional 3 minutes after battery disconnect before proceeding
  6. Position steering wheel straight ahead and turn to lock position to remove key

Procedure

  1. 1
    Remove lower steering column covers
Locate the lower steering column cover beneath the steering wheel. Remove the two Phillips screws at the bottom of the lower cover. Gently pull the lower cover downward and away from the column to release the retaining clips. Set aside in a safe location.
  2. 2
    Remove upper steering column cover
With the lower cover removed, locate the upper steering column cover. Remove the two Phillips screws securing the upper cover (typically located at the top sides). Carefully separate the upper cover from the column, working around the ignition cylinder and key slot. Disconnect any courtesy light connectors if equipped.
  3. 3
    Access dimmer switch mounting
With both covers removed, you will now have clear access to the left side of the steering column where the dimmer switch (wiper/washer stalk) is mounted. Identify the electrical connector at the base of the switch assembly and the mounting screws holding the switch bracket to the column.
  4. 4
    Disconnect dimmer switch electrical connector
Locate the electrical connector for the dimmer switch assembly. Press the locking tab on the connector and carefully pull the connector straight out from the switch. Do not pull on the wires themselves. If access is tight, you may need to trace the wire harness to a point where you can disconnect it more easily.
The connector locking tab can be fragile. Use a small flat blade screwdriver to assist with release if needed, but do not force it.
  5. 5
    Remove dimmer switch mounting screws
Locate the two Phillips or Torx screws securing the dimmer switch bracket to the steering column (typically on the left side of the column). Remove these screws completely and place them in your parts tray. These screws secure the switch assembly to the column housing.

  6. 6
    Remove dimmer switch assembly
With the screws removed and connector disconnected, carefully pull the dimmer switch assembly away from the steering column. The switch may have alignment pins or tabs that need to be gently wiggled free. Remove the assembly completely from the vehicle and inspect the mounting area for any debris or damage.
  7. 7
    Install new dimmer switch assembly
Position the new dimmer switch assembly onto the steering column, aligning the mounting holes and any locating pins or tabs with their corresponding positions on the column housing. Ensure the switch is fully seated against the column before installing screws.
  8. 8
    Install and torque mounting screws
Install the two mounting screws finger-tight first to ensure proper alignment. Then torque the screws to specification using a torque wrench. Tighten in an alternating pattern if applicable to ensure even clamping force.

  9. 9
    Reconnect electrical connector
Reconnect the electrical connector to the dimmer switch assembly, ensuring it clicks fully into place. Give the connector a gentle tug to verify it is securely locked. Route any wiring to prevent pinching during cover reinstallation.
  10. 10
    Reinstall upper steering column cover
Position the upper steering column cover back onto the column, working it carefully around the ignition cylinder. Reconnect any courtesy light connectors if equipped. Install the two Phillips screws and torque to specification.

  11. 11
    Reinstall lower steering column cover
Align the lower steering column cover with the upper cover and column assembly. Press firmly to engage all retaining clips until you hear them click into place. Install the two Phillips screws at the bottom and torque to specification.

  12. 12
    Reconnect battery and initialize systems
Reconnect the negative battery terminal and torque the terminal bolt to specification. Do not overtighten as this can damage the terminal.

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all steering column covers are properly seated with no gaps
  2. Verify all screws are installed and torqued to specification
  3. Check that the dimmer switch stalk operates smoothly without binding

Verification

  • Turn ignition to ON position (engine off) and verify instrument cluster illuminates with no warning lights related to the switch
  • Test all dimmer switch functions: wiper off, intermittent (all speeds), low speed, high speed
  • Test washer function by pulling the stalk toward you - washer spray and wiper activation should occur
  • Test mist function (if equipped) by pushing stalk down briefly
  • Verify all wiper speeds operate correctly and return to proper park position
  • Confirm no rattles or loose components in steering column area
  • Re-initialize power windows and sunroof as needed: Hold window switch up until fully closed, then continue holding for 2 seconds. Repeat for each window and sunroof
