Parts
- Dimmer switch assembly (wiper/washer stalk) × 1 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
- Turn ignition off and remove key/fob from vehicle
- Allow vehicle to sit for at least 3 minutes to discharge airbag system capacitors
- Open hood and disconnect negative battery terminal using 10mm socket
- Wait an additional 3 minutes after battery disconnect before proceeding
- Position steering wheel straight ahead and turn to lock position to remove key
Procedure
- 1Remove lower steering column coversLocate the lower steering column cover beneath the steering wheel. Remove the two Phillips screws at the bottom of the lower cover. Gently pull the lower cover downward and away from the column to release the retaining clips. Set aside in a safe location.
- 2Remove upper steering column coverWith the lower cover removed, locate the upper steering column cover. Remove the two Phillips screws securing the upper cover (typically located at the top sides). Carefully separate the upper cover from the column, working around the ignition cylinder and key slot. Disconnect any courtesy light connectors if equipped.
- 3Access dimmer switch mountingWith both covers removed, you will now have clear access to the left side of the steering column where the dimmer switch (wiper/washer stalk) is mounted. Identify the electrical connector at the base of the switch assembly and the mounting screws holding the switch bracket to the column.
- 4Disconnect dimmer switch electrical connectorLocate the electrical connector for the dimmer switch assembly. Press the locking tab on the connector and carefully pull the connector straight out from the switch. Do not pull on the wires themselves. If access is tight, you may need to trace the wire harness to a point where you can disconnect it more easily.⚠The connector locking tab can be fragile. Use a small flat blade screwdriver to assist with release if needed, but do not force it.
- 5Remove dimmer switch mounting screwsLocate the two Phillips or Torx screws securing the dimmer switch bracket to the steering column (typically on the left side of the column). Remove these screws completely and place them in your parts tray. These screws secure the switch assembly to the column housing.Torque specCover Screws10 Nm (8 lb-ft)
- 6Remove dimmer switch assemblyWith the screws removed and connector disconnected, carefully pull the dimmer switch assembly away from the steering column. The switch may have alignment pins or tabs that need to be gently wiggled free. Remove the assembly completely from the vehicle and inspect the mounting area for any debris or damage.
- 7Install new dimmer switch assemblyPosition the new dimmer switch assembly onto the steering column, aligning the mounting holes and any locating pins or tabs with their corresponding positions on the column housing. Ensure the switch is fully seated against the column before installing screws.
- 8Install and torque mounting screwsInstall the two mounting screws finger-tight first to ensure proper alignment. Then torque the screws to specification using a torque wrench. Tighten in an alternating pattern if applicable to ensure even clamping force.Torque specCover Screws10 Nm (8 lb-ft)
- 9Reconnect electrical connectorReconnect the electrical connector to the dimmer switch assembly, ensuring it clicks fully into place. Give the connector a gentle tug to verify it is securely locked. Route any wiring to prevent pinching during cover reinstallation.
- 10Reinstall upper steering column coverPosition the upper steering column cover back onto the column, working it carefully around the ignition cylinder. Reconnect any courtesy light connectors if equipped. Install the two Phillips screws and torque to specification.Torque specCover Screws10 Nm (8 lb-ft)
- 11Reinstall lower steering column coverAlign the lower steering column cover with the upper cover and column assembly. Press firmly to engage all retaining clips until you hear them click into place. Install the two Phillips screws at the bottom and torque to specification.Torque specCover Screws10 Nm (8 lb-ft)
- 12Reconnect battery and initialize systemsReconnect the negative battery terminal and torque the terminal bolt to specification. Do not overtighten as this can damage the terminal.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
Reassembly
- Ensure all steering column covers are properly seated with no gaps
- Verify all screws are installed and torqued to specification
- Check that the dimmer switch stalk operates smoothly without binding
Verification
- Turn ignition to ON position (engine off) and verify instrument cluster illuminates with no warning lights related to the switch
- Test all dimmer switch functions: wiper off, intermittent (all speeds), low speed, high speed
- Test washer function by pulling the stalk toward you - washer spray and wiper activation should occur
- Test mist function (if equipped) by pushing stalk down briefly
- Verify all wiper speeds operate correctly and return to proper park position
- Confirm no rattles or loose components in steering column area
- Re-initialize power windows and sunroof as needed: Hold window switch up until fully closed, then continue holding for 2 seconds. Repeat for each window and sunroof
