This procedure covers the diagnosis and replacement of the instrument cluster (speedometer) in a 2018-2024 Honda Accord with the 1.5L turbo engine, including electrical disconnection and recalibration steps.

Warnings

Disconnecting the battery will erase radio presets and require power window initialization.
The instrument cluster contains sensitive electronics. Handle by edges only and avoid static discharge.
ℹ️Some clusters may require dealer-level programming to transfer VIN and mileage data. Verify compatibility before ordering replacement.

Parts

  • Instrument cluster assembly × 1 — Use OEM specification
  • Instrument cluster connector seals (if damaged) × 1 — Use OEM specification

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key fob from vehicle
  3. Wait at least 3 minutes after turning off ignition to allow airbag system to discharge
  4. Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 2 minutes before proceeding
  5. Position steering wheel in the straight-ahead position at lowest height setting for maximum access

Procedure

  1. 1
    Disconnect battery negative terminal
Using a 10mm socket, loosen the negative battery terminal bolt. Remove the cable from the battery post and secure it away from the terminal to prevent accidental reconnection. Wait a minimum of 2 minutes before proceeding to allow airbag system capacitors to fully discharge.

    Battery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
  2. 2
    Remove lower steering column covers
Locate the two Phillips screws on the underside of the lower steering column cover. Remove these screws and carefully pull the lower cover away from the column. The cover has retaining clips on the sides that will release with gentle outward pressure. Set the lower cover aside.

    Cover Screws10 Nm (8 lb-ft)
  3. 3
    Remove upper steering column cover
With the lower cover removed, locate the upper cover securing points. Remove the Phillips screws at the top of the upper column cover. Carefully separate the upper cover from the column assembly, being mindful of the clip locations at the sides and rear. Place the cover in a safe location.

  4. 4
    Remove instrument cluster trim bezel
Using a trim removal tool or flathead screwdriver wrapped in tape, carefully pry the instrument cluster bezel away from the dashboard starting at the lower corners. Work around the perimeter releasing the retaining clips. There are approximately 8-10 clips holding this bezel. Once all clips are released, pull the bezel forward and away from the dashboard.
  5. 5
    Remove instrument cluster mounting bolts
With the bezel removed, you will see four 10mm bolts securing the instrument cluster to the dashboard frame (two at top, two at bottom). Using a 10mm socket, remove all four mounting bolts completely. Support the cluster with one hand as you remove the final bolt to prevent it from falling.
Support the instrument cluster while removing the last bolt to prevent damage to wiring harnesses.
    Torque spec
    Module Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
  6. 6
    Disconnect instrument cluster electrical connectors
Carefully pull the instrument cluster forward approximately 4-6 inches to access the rear connectors. You will find two large multi-pin connectors (typically a black 32-pin and a gray 24-pin connector). Press the locking tabs on each connector and pull straight back to disconnect. Note the orientation and routing of each connector for reinstallation.
Do not pull on wires. Press the connector release tabs firmly and pull only on the connector bodies.
  7. 7
    Remove instrument cluster from dashboard
With both electrical connectors disconnected, carefully maneuver the instrument cluster out through the dashboard opening. Guide it past the steering column, tilting slightly if needed. Handle the cluster by the edges and avoid touching the display screen or circuit boards.
  8. 8
    Install replacement instrument cluster
Position the new or repaired instrument cluster near the dashboard opening. Carefully guide it into position, ensuring wiring harnesses are not pinched or kinked. Before fully inserting, verify the cluster orientation matches the mounting hole pattern.
  9. 9
    Reconnect electrical connectors
With the cluster partially inserted, reconnect both electrical connectors to the rear of the instrument cluster. Push each connector firmly until you hear and feel a positive click indicating the locking tab has engaged. Verify connectors are fully seated by gently tugging on the connector bodies (not wires).
  10. 10
    Secure instrument cluster
Push the instrument cluster fully into the dashboard opening, aligning the four mounting bolt holes. Install all four mounting bolts and hand-tighten them initially. Using a torque wrench, tighten the mounting bolts in a cross pattern (top left, bottom right, top right, bottom left) to the specified torque.

    Module Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
  11. 11
Reinstall trim bezel and column covers
Position the instrument cluster trim bezel and press firmly around the perimeter to engage all retaining clips. Install the upper steering column cover and secure with screws. Install the lower steering column cover, ensuring all clips engage, then secure with screws. Torque all cover screws to specification.

    Cover Screws10 Nm (8 lb-ft)
  12. 12
    Reconnect battery and initialize systems
Reconnect the negative battery terminal and torque the terminal bolt to specification. Turn the ignition to ON position (do not start engine). Verify the instrument cluster powers up and completes its self-test sequence. All warning lights should illuminate briefly then extinguish except for those that are condition-dependent (parking brake, etc.).
ℹ️If replacing with a new cluster, dealer programming may be required to transfer mileage and VIN data per federal regulations.

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked before securing cluster
  2. Verify all dashboard trim pieces are flush and all retaining clips are properly engaged
  3. Perform power window auto-up/down initialization: lower window fully, then raise fully and hold switch for 2 seconds

Verification

  • Turn ignition to ON position and verify all instrument cluster displays illuminate correctly
  • Verify speedometer reads 0 mph with vehicle stationary
  • Start engine and verify tachometer responds to throttle input
  • Check that all warning lights function properly during bulb check
  • Test drive vehicle and verify speedometer tracks vehicle speed accurately
  • Verify odometer displays correct mileage (should match vehicle records)
  • Check that all indicator lights (turn signals, high beams, etc.) illuminate on cluster when activated
  • Scan for diagnostic trouble codes; address any communication errors if present
