Expert-verified. Personally reviewed and approved by OLP's master technicians (Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — 20+ years each). Always follow the vehicle's factory service information and torque specs.

This procedure covers removal and replacement of the starter solenoid on the 2018-2024 Honda Accord with 1.5L turbo engine, including proper electrical disconnection and torque specifications.

Warnings

⚠️Always disconnect the negative battery terminal first and reconnect it last to prevent short circuits and electrical shock
The starter solenoid is located near the exhaust system. Allow engine to cool completely before beginning work
Ensure vehicle is on level ground and properly supported on jack stands before working underneath
ℹ️The starter solenoid on this engine is integral to the starter assembly. This procedure assumes replacement of the solenoid only, which may require partial starter disassembly

Parts

  • Starter solenoid × 1 — Use OEM Honda specification or quality aftermarket
  • Dielectric grease × 1 — Small packet for electrical connections

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
  2. Allow engine to cool completely (minimum 2 hours if recently driven)
  3. Disconnect negative battery cable and secure away from battery post
  4. Raise front of vehicle and support securely on jack stands
  5. Remove plastic engine undertray/splash shield if equipped

Procedure

  1. 1
    Disconnect battery negative terminal
Using a 10mm wrench, loosen and remove the negative battery terminal cable. Secure the cable away from the battery to prevent accidental contact during the repair.
    Torque spec
    Battery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
  2. 2
    Access starter location
The starter is located on the transmission bellhousing side, below the intake manifold. Access is best from underneath the vehicle. Remove the engine undertray using 10mm bolts if not already removed.
  3. 3
    Disconnect starter wiring harness
Locate the main starter solenoid wire connector and the battery cable terminal on top of the starter. Press the release tab and disconnect the wiring harness connector from the solenoid. Using a 12mm socket, remove the nut securing the battery positive cable to the solenoid terminal stud.
The battery cable terminal may still have residual voltage. Avoid contact with metal surfaces
    Torque spec
    Battery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
  4. 4
    Remove starter mounting bolts
Using a 14mm socket with extension, remove the two or three starter mounting bolts securing the starter to the transmission bellhousing. The upper bolt may require access from above through the engine bay. Support the starter assembly while removing the final bolt.
Starter assembly weighs approximately 8-10 lbs. Support it while removing final mounting bolt to prevent dropping
    Torque spec
    Mounting Bolts32 Nm (24 lb-ft)
  5. 5
    Remove starter assembly
Carefully lower and remove the starter assembly from the bellhousing. Maneuver it out from underneath the vehicle, being mindful of surrounding components and wiring. Place on clean work surface.
  6. 6
    Remove solenoid mounting bolts
With starter on workbench, locate the two or three bolts securing the solenoid to the starter motor housing. These are typically 10mm bolts. Remove these bolts and carefully lift the solenoid away from the starter, noting the position of any shims or spacers.
ℹ️The solenoid plunger engages with the starter drive mechanism. Note orientation and engagement before separation
    Torque spec
    Module Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
  7. 7
    Inspect and clean mounting surfaces
Inspect the starter motor mounting surface and solenoid mating surface for corrosion, debris, or damage. Clean both surfaces with wire brush if needed. Check electrical contacts inside solenoid mounting area for wear or burning.
  8. 8
    Install new solenoid
Position the new starter solenoid onto the starter motor housing, ensuring the plunger properly engages with the shift fork mechanism. Align mounting holes and install mounting bolts finger-tight, then torque to specification in a cross pattern.
    Torque spec
    Module Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
  9. 9
    Reinstall starter assembly
Position the starter assembly back into the bellhousing opening. Align the mounting holes with the transmission bellhousing. Install starter mounting bolts finger-tight initially to ensure proper alignment.
  10. 10
    Torque starter mounting bolts
Using a torque wrench, tighten the starter mounting bolts to specification. Start with the lower bolt, then the upper bolt(s) to ensure even seating against the bellhousing.
    Torque spec
    Mounting Bolts32 Nm (24 lb-ft)
  11. 11
    Reconnect electrical connections
Reconnect the battery positive cable to the solenoid terminal stud. Clean terminal if needed and apply small amount of dielectric grease. Torque the terminal nut to specification. Reconnect the wiring harness connector to the solenoid, ensuring it clicks into place securely.
    Torque spec
    Battery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
  12. 12
    Reinstall undertray and lower vehicle
Reinstall the engine undertray or splash shield if removed. Verify all fasteners are secure. Carefully lower the vehicle from jack stands to ground level.
  13. 13
    Reconnect battery
Reconnect the negative battery terminal cable. Clean the terminal post if needed before reconnecting. Torque the battery terminal bolt to specification.
    Torque spec
    Battery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)

Reassembly

  1. Ensure all electrical connections are clean, tight, and properly secured
  2. Verify starter mounting bolts are torqued to specification and starter is firmly seated against bellhousing
  3. Confirm engine undertray is properly reinstalled with all fasteners secure
  4. Double-check that no tools or parts were left in engine bay or under vehicle

Verification

  • With vehicle in Park and foot on brake, turn ignition key to START position and verify engine cranks normally
  • Listen for any abnormal grinding, clicking, or buzzing noises from starter area during cranking
  • Verify engine starts and runs normally without any warning lights
  • Check that starter disengages properly when key is released to RUN position
  • Perform 3-5 start cycles to confirm consistent operation and proper solenoid engagement
