This procedure covers the replacement of the steering angle sensor on a 2018-2024 Honda Accord with the 1.5L turbo engine, including calibration requirements.
Warnings
⚠️The airbag system must be fully deactivated before working on the steering column. Failure to wait the full 3 minutes after battery disconnect can result in airbag deployment and serious injury.
⚠Steering angle sensor calibration is mandatory after replacement. Failure to calibrate will cause steering warning lights, ESC malfunction, and potential safety system failures.
⚠Do not rotate the steering wheel with the intermediate shaft disconnected or steering angle sensor removed, as this can damage the clock spring and SRS components.
ℹ️The vehicle must be on a level surface with wheels pointed straight ahead before beginning this procedure.

Parts
- Steering angle sensor × 1 — Use OEM Honda part number
- Steering column cover screws (if damaged) × 4 — Use OEM specification
Preparation
- Position vehicle on level surface with front wheels pointed straight ahead
- Turn ignition to OFF position and remove key/fob from vehicle
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait minimum 3 minutes for airbag system capacitors to discharge
- Set parking brake and place wheel chocks behind rear wheels
- Lower driver's seat to lowest position for better access to steering column
- Record any active steering or stability control fault codes with scan tool before beginning work
Procedure
- 1Remove lower steering column coversRemove the lower dashboard knee bolster if equipped. Locate and remove the screws securing the upper and lower steering column covers (typically 2-4 Torx screws). Carefully separate the upper cover from the lower cover and remove both pieces. Disconnect any electrical connectors for cruise control or paddle shifters if present on the upper cover.
- 2Access steering angle sensorLocate the steering angle sensor module mounted on the steering column beneath the steering wheel. The sensor is typically a black plastic housing attached to the steering shaft with a wiring harness connector. Note the orientation and position of the sensor before removal.
- 3Disconnect electrical connectorPress the locking tab on the steering angle sensor electrical connector and carefully disconnect it from the sensor module. Do not pull on the wires; press the release tab and pull the connector housing. Move the wiring harness aside to prevent damage during sensor removal.
- 4Remove steering angle sensor mounting hardwareRemove the mounting screws or bolts securing the steering angle sensor to the steering column. On most 2018-2024 Accord models, this involves 2-3 screws. Keep track of any spacers or alignment features. Carefully slide the sensor assembly off the steering shaft, noting its orientation and any alignment marks.
- 5Install new steering angle sensorEnsure the steering wheel is still centered and has not been moved. Align the new steering angle sensor with the steering shaft, matching the factory orientation and any alignment notches or tabs. Slide the sensor onto the shaft until it seats fully against the mounting surface. Verify proper engagement before securing.
- 6Secure sensor mounting hardwareInstall the steering angle sensor mounting screws and tighten evenly in a cross pattern to ensure proper seating. If torque specification is provided in service manual, follow those values. Ensure the sensor housing is flush against the mounting surface with no gaps.Torque specCover Screws10 Nm (8 lb-ft)
- 7Reconnect electrical connectorReconnect the electrical connector to the steering angle sensor, ensuring it clicks into place and the locking tab engages fully. Gently tug on the connector to verify it is secure. Route the wiring harness back to its original position and secure any clips.
- 8Reinstall steering column coversReconnect any electrical connectors for cruise control or paddle shifters. Align the upper and lower steering column covers and snap them together. Install all cover screws and tighten securely but do not overtighten plastic components.Torque specCover Screws10 Nm (8 lb-ft)
- 9Reconnect battery and prepare for calibrationReconnect the negative battery terminal. Turn the ignition to ON position without starting the engine. Verify that the steering angle sensor is recognized by the vehicle systems. Multiple warning lights (VSA, power steering, etc.) will likely illuminate until calibration is completed.
- 10Perform steering angle sensor calibrationConnect the Honda Diagnostic System (HDS) or compatible scan tool capable of Honda steering angle sensor calibration. Navigate to the VSA or steering system menu and select steering angle sensor calibration/zero point calibration. Ensure the vehicle is on level ground with wheels straight ahead. Follow the scan tool prompts to complete the calibration procedure, which typically involves confirming the steering wheel is centered and initiating the zero-point learning.
Reassembly
- Verify all steering column covers are properly secured and all trim pieces are reinstalled
- Confirm all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
- Ensure no tools or parts have been left in the driver footwell area
- Reinstall lower dashboard knee bolster if it was removed
Verification
- Start the engine and verify that all steering-related warning lights (power steering, VSA, etc.) are extinguished after calibration
- Turn the steering wheel slowly from lock to lock while stationary to verify smooth operation and no binding
- Use scan tool to verify steering angle sensor is reading correctly and shows approximately 0 degrees with wheels straight
- Perform a test drive at low speed in a safe area to confirm proper operation of electric power steering and VSA systems
- Re-scan for fault codes and verify no new codes are present related to steering angle sensor or stability control systems
- Verify steering wheel returns to center properly after turns and steering feel is normal
