Steering Wheel

This procedure covers removal and installation of the steering wheel on a 2018-2024 Honda Accord with 1.5L turbo engine, including airbag module handling and steering angle sensor calibration.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level ground with front wheels pointed straight ahead
2. Turn ignition to OFF and remove key
3. Disconnect negative battery cable, then positive battery cable
4. Wait minimum 3 minutes for SRS system capacitor discharge
5. Mark steering wheel position relative to steering column shaft with tape or paint pen for proper alignment during reinstallation

Procedure

   Remove lower steering column covers
   Remove the lower steering column cover screws and separate the upper and lower column covers. Set covers aside in a clean area to prevent scratching.
   Torque spec

   Remove driver airbag module
   Locate the two T30 Torx bolts on the sides of the steering wheel (accessible from the rear). Remove both airbag module mounting bolts. Carefully pull the airbag module away from the steering wheel. Disconnect the airbag electrical connector by pressing the release tab and pulling straight out. Disconnect the horn connector if equipped.
   ⚠️Place airbag module face-up on a clean, flat surface away from the work area. Never place face-down as accidental deployment can cause the module to become a projectile.
   ⚠Do not use impact tools on airbag module bolts. Hand tools only.

   Airbag Module Bolts7 Nm (5 lb-ft)

   Disconnect steering wheel electrical connections
   Disconnect the following connectors from behind the steering wheel: cruise control switch connector, audio/phone control connector (if equipped), paddle shifter connectors (if equipped), and steering angle sensor connector. Note the routing of all wiring harnesses for reinstallation.
   ℹ️Take photos of connector locations and wire routing before disconnection to aid reassembly.

   Remove steering wheel retaining nut
   Using a 19mm deep socket, remove the steering wheel retaining nut from the center of the steering wheel. Do not attempt to remove the steering wheel by pulling at this time.
   ⚠Keep the nut slightly threaded (2-3 turns) until the steering wheel is loosened with a puller to prevent the wheel from coming off suddenly.

   Steering Wheel Nut54 Nm (40 lb-ft)

   Install steering wheel puller and remove wheel
   Thread the steering wheel nut back on 2-3 turns. Install steering wheel puller (Honda 07JAC-001020A or equivalent) ensuring it is properly seated. Tighten the puller evenly to break the steering wheel free from the shaft taper. Once loose, remove the nut completely and lift the steering wheel off the column shaft. Guide all wiring harnesses through the wheel during removal.
   ⚠Do not strike the steering wheel or column shaft with a hammer. Use only a proper steering wheel puller to avoid damaging the column shaft or airbag components.

   Inspect steering column components
   Inspect the steering column shaft splines for damage or wear. Inspect the clockspring (cable reel) for any signs of damage. Verify the clockspring is centered - there should be alignment marks visible. If the clockspring has rotated out of position, it must be re-centered before installing the steering wheel.
   ⚠If the clockspring is not centered, the airbag system will malfunction and the clockspring may be damaged during steering operation. Center the clockspring according to manufacturer procedures if needed.

   Install replacement or repaired steering wheel
   Route all wiring harnesses through the new or repaired steering wheel. Align the steering wheel with your alignment marks and the steering column shaft flat/splines. Ensure the wheels are still pointed straight ahead. Slide the steering wheel onto the column shaft, ensuring full engagement with the splines.
   ℹ️The steering wheel should only fit in the correct position due to the spline design. Do not force if it does not slide on easily - verify alignment.

   Install steering wheel retaining nut
   Install a new steering wheel retaining nut (or clean and inspect the original if reusing). Torque the nut to specification using a torque wrench. Verify the steering wheel is fully seated on the shaft with no gap visible.

   Reconnect steering wheel electrical connections
   Reconnect all electrical connectors in reverse order of removal: steering angle sensor connector, paddle shifter connectors (if equipped), audio/phone control connector (if equipped), and cruise control switch connector. Ensure all connectors are fully seated with audible clicks and properly routed.
   ℹ️Verify no wires are pinched or under tension that would interfere with steering wheel rotation.

    Reinstall driver airbag module
    Reconnect the horn connector (if equipped) and airbag module connector. Ensure the connector locks fully. Position the airbag module onto the steering wheel, aligning the mounting holes. Install new airbag module mounting bolts (or clean original bolts if specified by manufacturer) and torque to specification in the sequence specified in the service manual (typically alternating side-to-side).
    ⚠️Ensure no wires are pinched between the airbag module and steering wheel. Verify the airbag connector is fully locked before installing the module.

    Reinstall steering column covers
    Position the upper and lower steering column covers and secure with the retaining screws. Torque screws to specification. Ensure covers are properly aligned and do not interfere with steering wheel movement.

    Reconnect battery and perform system initialization
    Reconnect positive battery cable first, then negative battery cable. Turn ignition to ON position (do not start engine). The SRS indicator light should illuminate for approximately 6 seconds then turn off. If the light stays on or flashes, there is a fault in the airbag system that must be diagnosed.
    ⚠Do not attempt to start or drive the vehicle if the SRS light remains illuminated.

    Calibrate steering angle sensor
    Connect Honda Diagnostic System (HDS) or equivalent scan tool. Navigate to VSA system and perform steering angle sensor calibration procedure. This typically requires turning the steering wheel fully left, then fully right, then back to center while the scan tool monitors the sensor. Follow the scan tool prompts exactly. Clear any stored VSA or power steering codes after successful calibration.
    ⚠Steering angle sensor calibration is mandatory after steering wheel removal. Vehicle stability control and steering assist will not function correctly without proper calibration.

Reassembly

1. Verify all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
2. Confirm steering wheel is centered with front wheels pointed straight ahead
3. Ensure no gaps exist between steering wheel and column shaft
4. Verify all trim panels and covers are properly secured

Verification

• Start engine and verify SRS indicator light turns off after 6 seconds
• Verify no warning lights are illuminated on instrument cluster (SRS, VSA, power steering)
• Test all steering wheel controls: cruise control, audio controls, horn, and paddle shifters (if equipped)
• Turn steering wheel slowly lock-to-lock while stationary and verify smooth operation with no binding or unusual noises
• Perform a test drive at low speed in a safe area and verify normal steering operation and no warning lights
• Use scan tool to verify no active or pending codes in SRS, VSA, or power steering systems
• Confirm steering angle sensor shows 0 degrees (±2 degrees) with wheels straight ahead using scan tool
