- Take photos of component positions for reference during reassembly
- Position transmission jack or secondary floor jack under subframe center for support
Procedure
- 1Disconnect sway bar linksLocate the sway bar end links connecting the sway bar to the lower control arms on both sides. Hold the ball stud shaft with an Allen key to prevent spinning, then remove the lower sway bar link nuts using appropriate socket. Disconnect both links from the control arms.Torque specSway Bar Link Nuts55 Nm (41 lb-ft)
- 2Separate lower ball joints from knucklesRemove the ball joint castle nuts from both lower control arms where they connect to the steering knuckles. Use a ball joint separator tool to press the ball joint stud out of the knuckle taper. Do not hammer on the knuckle. Once separated, support the knuckle/strut assembly with wire to prevent strain on the brake hose and CV axle.⚠Ball joint taper is very tight. Apply separator tool pressure gradually and tap on knuckle boss (not bearing surface) if needed.Torque specBall Joint Nut84 Nm (62 lb-ft)
- 3Disconnect steering rack from knucklesRemove the outer tie rod end castle nuts or lock nuts from both steering knuckles. Use a tie rod separator or ball joint separator to disconnect the tie rod ends from the knuckles. Count and record the number of exposed threads on each tie rod for approximate reinstallation position.ℹ️Thread count is only an approximation. Professional alignment is still required after reassembly.
- 4Disconnect power steering connections if equippedAlthough this vehicle has electric power steering with no hydraulic lines, verify no electrical connectors on the steering rack need disconnection. Disconnect the steering rack power connector if accessible from underneath. Label any electrical connections removed.ℹ️Some configurations may have sensors or connectors mounted to the rack that must be disconnected.
- 5Remove steering rack mounting hardwareLocate the steering rack mounting brackets that secure the rack to the subframe. Remove the steering rack mounting bolts (typically 2-4 bolts). Once free, secure the steering rack to the vehicle body using safety wire or mechanics wire to prevent it from hanging on the steering shaft U-joint.⚠Do not allow steering rack to hang freely as this can damage the steering shaft coupling and pinion seal.
- 6Disconnect engine mount(s) from subframeIdentify any engine or transmission mount brackets that attach to the subframe. Support the engine using a block of wood and floor jack positioned under the oil pan. Remove the lower mount bolts that connect the mount to the subframe. Leave the upper mount-to-engine connections intact.⚠️Engine must be properly supported before removing subframe mounts to prevent engine dropping.
- 7Mark subframe alignment positionBefore removing subframe mounting bolts, use paint marker to mark the exact position of the subframe relative to the body mounting points. Mark all four corners. This helps with initial positioning during installation and reduces alignment correction needed.ℹ️Factory alignment marks may still be visible on newer vehicles and should be preserved if possible.
- 8Support subframe with transmission jackPosition transmission jack or heavy-duty floor jack directly under the center of the subframe. Raise jack until it just contacts the subframe and supports its weight. Use wood blocks between jack and subframe to distribute load and prevent slipping. Secure subframe to jack with strap or chain if available.⚠️Subframe assembly with attached components weighs over 100 lbs. Ensure jack is stable and centered before removing mounting bolts.
- 9Remove rear subframe mounting boltsLocate the two rear subframe mounting bolts that secure the subframe to the chassis. These are large bolts typically requiring 17mm or 19mm socket. Support the rear of the subframe with a second jack stand if needed. Remove both rear mounting bolts completely.⚠Have assistant help guide subframe or use additional support as weight distribution changes when bolts are removed.
- 10Remove front subframe mounting boltsRemove the two front subframe mounting bolts using appropriate socket. As the last bolt is removed, carefully control the subframe with the transmission jack. The subframe will now be free from the vehicle.⚠️Maintain positive control of jack as final bolt is removed. Subframe may shift suddenly when freed.
- 11Lower and remove subframe assemblySlowly and carefully lower the transmission jack, guiding the subframe down and away from the vehicle. Watch for any remaining connections, wiring, or hoses that may still be attached. Once clear of the vehicle, lower completely and remove from under vehicle. If only replacing subframe, transfer all components (control arms, steering rack, sway bar) to new subframe.⚠Lower subframe slowly and check clearance on all sides. Front sway bar and control arms may need repositioning to clear body.
- 12Inspect and prepare new or replacement subframeIf installing new subframe, verify all mounting holes are clean and threads are undamaged. Transfer all components from old subframe maintaining their exact positions. Install steering rack onto new subframe using alignment marks made during removal. If reusing subframe, inspect for cracks, damage, or worn bushings and replace as needed.ℹ️Clean all bolt threads with wire brush and apply anti-seize to prevent future corrosion.
- 13Position and install subframeLoad the subframe assembly onto the transmission jack and carefully raise it into position under the vehicle. Align the subframe mounting holes with the chassis mounting points using the paint marks made during removal. Install all four subframe mounting bolts finger-tight first, then torque in a cross pattern to manufacturer specifications (typically 75-90 Nm, though exact spec not provided in database).⚠Subframe must be aligned precisely before tightening bolts. Misalignment will affect suspension geometry and cause premature wear.
- 14Reconnect engine mounts to subframeLower the engine jack slightly to allow engine mount to align with subframe mounting position. Install engine mount-to-subframe bolts and tighten to specification. Remove engine support jack once mounts are secured.
- 15Install steering rack to subframeIf steering rack was removed from subframe, position it using alignment marks and install mounting bolts. Tighten steering rack mounting bolts to specification. Remove safety wire supporting rack. Reconnect any electrical connectors to steering rack.ℹ️Verify steering rack is centered before connecting tie rod ends to ensure equal turning radius both directions.
