Install an aftermarket subwoofer in the trunk area of a 2018-2024 Honda Accord, including proper wiring from the head unit and mounting.
Warnings
⚠Disconnect battery negative terminal before starting to prevent electrical shorts
⚠Route power cable away from all moving parts, sharp edges, and heat sources
ℹ️Verify amplifier power requirements before selecting wire gauge and fuse rating
ℹ️Some Accord models have active noise cancellation which may require additional integration

Parts
- Subwoofer enclosure (powered or passive) × 1 — Use aftermarket specification matching vehicle size
- Amplifier (if using passive subwoofer) × 1 — Use aftermarket specification
- Subwoofer wiring kit with power cable, RCA cables, remote wire × 1 — Minimum 8 AWG for power wire
- Inline fuse holder with appropriate fuse × 1 — Match amplifier requirements
- Ring terminal connectors × 2 — For battery connection
- Butt connectors or solder and heat shrink × 1 — For speaker level inputs if needed
Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and set parking brake
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 3 minutes for system discharge
- Remove trunk floor mat and access spare tire well if routing wires underneath
- Determine mounting location for subwoofer ensuring trunk functionality is maintained
- Plan wire routing path from battery through firewall or door sill to trunk
Procedure
- 1Run power cable from battery to trunkRoute the power cable from the battery positive terminal through an existing firewall grommet or along the door sill channel to the trunk. Use the passenger side to avoid interference with steering components. Install inline fuse holder within 18 inches of battery connection but do not insert fuse yet. Secure cable every 12 inches with zip ties away from heat and moving parts.
- 2Connect power cable to batteryAttach ring terminal to power cable end. Connect to positive battery terminal under the terminal bolt. Ensure connection is clean and tight. Do not install fuse in inline holder yet.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 3Remove head unit trim and access harnessUse panel removal tools to carefully pry out the center console trim panel surrounding the infotainment screen. Disconnect climate control connectors if necessary. Access the back of the head unit to identify RCA outputs or speaker wire connections. On non-premium audio systems, you may need to tap into rear speaker wires.
- 4Run RCA and remote turn-on cablesRoute RCA audio cables and amplifier remote turn-on wire from the head unit to the trunk using the same path as the power cable but on the opposite side of the vehicle to minimize noise interference. Use wire fish tape to pull cables through door sills or under carpet. Connect remote wire to the head unit's power antenna or amplifier turn-on lead (typically blue/white wire).
- 5Connect RCA cables to head unitIf the factory head unit has RCA outputs, connect the RCA cables directly. If tapping speaker wires, identify rear speaker positive and negative wires using a multimeter, connect using appropriate line output converter per converter instructions, then connect converter outputs to RCA cables.
- 6Mount amplifier in trunkSelect a mounting location on the trunk side wall or floor that allows adequate ventilation around the amplifier. Ensure mounting surface is clean and flat. If mounting to metal, drill pilot holes and secure amplifier mounting bracket using appropriate fasteners. If using module mounting bolts for brackets, apply specified torque.Torque specModule Mounting Bolts8 Nm (6 lb-ft)
- 7Establish ground connectionLocate a solid chassis ground point in the trunk within 18 inches of the amplifier. Remove paint down to bare metal using sandpaper or wire brush. Attach ring terminal from amplifier ground wire to chassis using a ground bolt. Ensure metal-to-metal contact for proper grounding.Torque specGround Bolt13 Nm (10 lb-ft)
- 8Connect amplifier wiringConnect power cable to amplifier positive terminal, ground cable to amplifier ground terminal, RCA cables to amplifier inputs, and remote turn-on wire to amplifier remote terminal. Verify all connections are secure and no bare wire is exposed. Double-check polarity on all connections.
- 9Mount and connect subwooferPosition subwoofer enclosure in selected trunk location ensuring it does not interfere with trunk lid closure or seat folding. Secure enclosure to prevent movement during driving. Connect speaker wire from amplifier output to subwoofer terminals, observing correct polarity (positive to positive, negative to negative).
- 10Set amplifier gain and crossoverSet amplifier low-pass crossover between 80-120 Hz depending on subwoofer specifications. Set gain control to minimum initially. Disable any bass boost features for initial testing. Verify phase switch is set to 0 degrees.
- 11Reconnect battery and insert fuseReconnect negative battery terminal and torque to specification. Insert fuse into inline fuse holder near battery. Verify no smoke, sparks, or unusual sounds when fuse is inserted.Torque specBattery Terminal Bolts6 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 12Test and tune systemTurn ignition to accessory position and power on head unit. Play music with bass content and verify subwoofer activates. Gradually increase amplifier gain until desired output is achieved without distortion. Listen for rattles and verify amplifier does not go into thermal protection. Adjust crossover and phase as needed for best integration with door speakers.
Reassembly
- Reinstall all interior trim panels and ensure all clips are fully seated
- Secure all wiring with zip ties and verify no wires are pinched or exposed
- Replace trunk floor mat and organize subwoofer enclosure for safe trunk use
- Reset radio presets and clock if disconnected during installation
Verification
- Verify subwoofer powers on when head unit is turned on and shuts off when head unit is off
- Test at various volume levels to ensure no distortion or clipping occurs
- Check that amplifier does not overheat during extended use
- Verify no electrical interference with other vehicle systems
- Confirm all trunk functionality remains intact including spare tire access
- Check that battery voltage remains stable with system operating
