Expert-verified. Personally reviewed and approved by OLP's master technicians (Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — 20+ years each). Always follow the vehicle's factory service information and torque specs.

This procedure removes and replaces the driver airbag module in the steering wheel of a 2016-2021 Honda Civic 1.5L Turbo.

Warnings

⚠️AIRBAG SYSTEM: Accidental deployment can cause severe injury or death. Follow all battery disconnect and wait time procedures exactly.
⚠️Never use non-OEM airbag modules or salvaged airbags. Only install new Honda genuine parts.
⚠️Do not strike, drop, or mishandle the airbag module. Store airbag face-up on a flat surface away from work area.
Incorrect torque on airbag bolts can cause deployment failure or accidental deployment. Use a calibrated torque wrench.
SRS system fault codes must be cleared with a Honda-compatible scan tool after replacement. Vehicle may not pass inspection with SRS light on.
Disconnecting the battery will erase radio presets and may require power window relearn procedures.
ℹ️This vehicle may have steering angle sensor calibration requirements after steering wheel removal. Consult factory service information.

Parts

  • Driver airbag module × 1 — Use OEM Honda part number for your specific trim level
  • Airbag connector clips (if damaged) × 1 — Inspect during removal

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Turn ignition OFF and remove key or fob from vehicle
  3. Turn front wheels to straight-ahead position and verify steering wheel is centered
  4. Wait for engine to cool completely if vehicle was recently driven
  5. Ensure you have the new OEM airbag module and all necessary tools before beginning

Procedure

  1. 1
Disconnect battery and discharge SRS system
Open hood and locate the 12V battery in the engine bay. Using a 10mm wrench, loosen and remove the negative battery terminal. Secure the cable away from the battery post. Wait a MINIMUM of 3 minutes (not 2) to allow the SRS backup capacitor to fully discharge. This wait time is critical for safety. Set a timer to ensure you wait the full duration.
  2. 2
    Access airbag module mounting bolts
Sit in the driver's seat with the door open. Look at the sides of the steering wheel (left and right). Locate two small access holes on the back/side of the steering wheel (one on each side). These provide access to the airbag module T30 Torx mounting bolts. On some trim levels, there may be small covers that need to be popped out with a trim tool first.
  3. 3
    Remove airbag module bolts
Insert the T30 Torx bit through each access hole and locate the airbag module mounting bolt. Turn counterclockwise to remove. There are two bolts total (one per side). Keep these bolts as they will be reused. Note: These bolts have specific torque requirements for reinstallation.
    Torque spec
    Airbag Module Bolts7 Nm (5 lb-ft)
  4. 4
Remove airbag module from steering wheel
Carefully pull the airbag module straight away from the steering wheel hub. It may require gentle wiggling but should come free once both bolts are removed. Support the module as you pull it toward you - do not let it hang by the wiring. The module will still be connected by two electrical connectors on the back.
⚠️Keep airbag module pointed away from your face and body during removal.
  5. 5
    Disconnect airbag electrical connectors
With the airbag module facing you, locate the two electrical connectors on the back (typically one yellow connector for the airbag and one for the horn). Each connector has a locking tab or slider. For the yellow SRS connector, slide the red locking tab toward you, then press the release tab while pulling the connector straight out. Disconnect the horn connector using its release tab. Note the routing and orientation of connectors for reassembly.
Do not force connectors. The yellow SRS connector has a secondary lock that must be released first.
  6. 6
    Store old airbag module safely
Place the removed airbag module face-UP on a clean, flat surface in a secure area away from the work zone. Never place it face-down. Keep it away from electrical sources, heat, and areas where it could be dropped or struck. If the module is being replaced due to deployment, handle as hazardous waste per local regulations.
  7. 7
    Inspect steering wheel and connectors
Examine the steering wheel mounting surface for damage or cracks. Inspect both electrical connectors for corrosion, damage, or bent pins. Check that the connector locking mechanisms are intact. Verify the clock spring (spiral cable) behind the steering wheel shows no damage and the centering marks are aligned if visible. If any damage is found, do not proceed until components are replaced.
  8. 8
    Prepare new airbag module
Remove the new airbag module from its packaging. Inspect for any shipping damage. Verify it matches the part number of the original module and is appropriate for your specific Civic trim level (modules vary by trim). Keep protective covers on connectors until ready to install.
  9. 9
Connect electrical connectors to new module
Remove protective covers from the new airbag connectors. Connect the horn connector first, ensuring it clicks into place. Then connect the yellow SRS connector, making sure it is fully seated. Slide the red secondary lock back into the locked position until it clicks. Verify both connectors are fully engaged and secure. Gently tug on each connector to confirm proper connection.
Ensure the yellow SRS connector red lock slides fully into place. Incomplete locking can cause system faults.
  10. 10
Install airbag module to steering wheel
Route the connector wiring into the steering wheel hub, ensuring no wires are pinched. Align the airbag module with the mounting holes on the steering wheel. Press the module gently toward the steering wheel until it is flush. Verify proper alignment before inserting bolts.
  11. 11
Install and torque airbag module bolts
Insert both T30 Torx airbag module bolts through the access holes on each side of the steering wheel. Thread them by hand first to ensure proper engagement. Using a calibrated torque wrench with T30 Torx bit, torque each bolt to exactly 7.0 Nm (5.0 lb-ft). This is a very low torque - do not overtighten. Torque both bolts evenly.
Critical torque specification: 7.0 Nm is approximately 62 inch-pounds. Use an accurate torque wrench - this is not hand-tight.

  12. 12
    Reconnect battery and clear codes
Return to the engine bay and reconnect the negative battery terminal. Tighten securely. Do not start the vehicle yet. If you have a Honda-compatible OBD-II scan tool, connect it and clear any SRS fault codes. If you do not have a scan tool, the codes may self-clear after successful system check, but professional code clearing is recommended.
  13. 13
    Perform SRS system check
Ensure no one is in front of the vehicle or inside except the driver's seat (with you properly seated and belted). Turn the ignition to ON position without starting the engine. Observe the SRS light on the instrument cluster. It should illuminate for approximately 6 seconds, then turn OFF. If the light stays on, flashes, or does not illuminate at all, there is a system fault. Do not drive the vehicle - diagnose fault codes with a scan tool.
An illuminated SRS light indicates a system fault. The airbag may not deploy in a crash. Professional diagnosis required.

Reassembly

  1. If access hole covers were removed from steering wheel, press them back into place ensuring they snap securely
  2. Perform power window auto-up/down relearn if necessary: lower each window fully, raise fully and hold switch for 2 seconds
  3. Reset clock and radio presets as needed

Verification

  • Confirm SRS warning light follows proper sequence: ON for 6 seconds at ignition ON, then OFF
  • Verify horn functions properly by pressing center of steering wheel
  • Gently attempt to move airbag module - it should be firmly mounted with no play or movement
  • Check that steering wheel operates normally with no binding or unusual noises
  • Test drive vehicle in safe area and verify no SRS light illumination during normal operation
  • If available, use scan tool to verify no active or pending SRS fault codes
  • Consider professional verification with Honda diagnostic equipment to confirm proper system function
