This procedure covers removal and replacement of the EGR cooler on the 2016-2021 Honda Civic 1.5L turbocharged engine, including coolant drain, exhaust component disconnection, and system reassembly.

Preparation
- Ensure engine is completely cold (minimum 3 hours after last operation)
- Park vehicle on level ground, engage parking brake, and place wheel chocks behind rear wheels
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and secure away from battery post
- Raise front of vehicle and support securely on jack stands
- Remove engine splash shield and undercarriage covers
- Spray all exhaust fasteners with penetrating oil and allow to soak
- Place drain pan under radiator drain plug
Procedure
- 1Drain coolant from systemOpen radiator drain plug at bottom of radiator and drain coolant into pan. Remove radiator cap to speed draining. Once drained, close drain plug and dispose of old coolant properly. The EGR cooler is part of the cooling system and must be drained to prevent spillage.
- 2Remove upper engine coverRemove the plastic engine cover by pulling upward on the four mounting points. The cover is held by rubber grommets. Set aside in clean area.
- 3Disconnect EGR cooler coolant linesLocate the two coolant hoses connected to the EGR cooler near the firewall. Use hose clamp pliers to compress and slide back the spring clamps. Have a drain pan ready as residual coolant will drain. Disconnect both inlet and outlet coolant hoses from the EGR cooler. - 5Disconnect oxygen sensorLocate the primary oxygen sensor in the exhaust pipe between turbo and catalytic converter. Disconnect the electrical connector by pressing the release tab. Using an O2 sensor socket or 22mm wrench, carefully unthread the sensor from the exhaust pipe. Turn counterclockwise to remove. - 18Bleed cooling system and final checksWith engine at operating temperature, turn heater to maximum heat and verify hot air output. Rev engine to 2500 RPM several times to help purge air pockets. Once air is purged and coolant level stabilizes, turn off engine and allow to cool. When cool, top off coolant to MAX line and install radiator cap. Reconnect negative battery terminal.
Reassembly
- Ensure all coolant hose clamps are properly positioned and tight
- Verify all exhaust connections are secure with no gaps at gaskets
- Double-check that oxygen sensor electrical connector is fully engaged
- Confirm all heat shields are properly installed to prevent heat damage to surrounding components
- Check that no tools or materials were left in engine bay
Verification
- Start engine and verify no coolant leaks at EGR cooler connections during warmup
- Check for exhaust leaks by listening for hissing at all disturbed connections
- Verify no check engine light after 10 minutes of operation
- Monitor coolant temperature gauge remains in normal range during test drive
- Verify heater produces hot air at full temperature setting
- Check coolant level after engine cools completely and top off if needed
- Inspect ground under vehicle after 24 hours of operation for any fluid leaks
- Use scan tool to verify oxygen sensor is reading properly and no EGR-related codes are present
