Replace the fuel pressure regulator on the 1.5L turbo engine to restore proper fuel system pressure and resolve fuel delivery issues.
Warnings
⚠️Gasoline is extremely flammable. Ensure adequate ventilation and no ignition sources within 50 feet of work area.
⚠️Fuel system operates under high pressure (60+ psi). Failure to properly relieve pressure will cause fuel spray and fire risk.
⚠Do not smoke or use open flames during this procedure. Have a fire extinguisher readily accessible.
⚠Work on a cool engine only. Hot components can ignite fuel vapors.

Preparation
- Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
- Ensure engine is completely cool (wait minimum 2 hours after last operation)
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait 3 minutes for system capacitors to discharge
- Remove engine cover by pulling upward on front clips and rotating cover forward
- Place absorbent pads and drip pan under fuel rail area to catch residual fuel
Procedure
- 1Relieve fuel system pressureLocate the fuel pump relay in the under-hood fuse box (relay #44). Remove the fuel pump relay. Attempt to start the engine and let it run until it stalls (typically 5-10 seconds). Crank the engine for an additional 3 seconds to ensure all residual pressure is released. Turn ignition OFF and reinstall the fuel pump relay.⚠️Residual fuel will still be present in lines even after pressure relief. Have shop towels ready.
- 2Disconnect fuel feed lineLocate the fuel feed line connection at the fuel rail on the driver's side of the engine. Using the appropriate fuel line disconnect tool, press the release tabs and carefully disconnect the quick-connect fitting. Cover the open line with a clean shop towel to prevent contamination. Some fuel will drain from the line.
- 3Remove electrical connectorsDisconnect the fuel injector electrical connectors by pressing the release tabs and pulling straight up. Label connectors if needed for reassembly reference. Disconnect the fuel pressure regulator electrical connector located on the driver's side end of the fuel rail.
- 4Remove fuel rail mounting boltsRemove the two fuel rail mounting bolts located at each end of the fuel rail assembly. Carefully lift the fuel rail assembly slightly to access the fuel pressure regulator. Do not fully remove the fuel rail unless necessary; it can remain connected to injectors.⚠Fuel rail is still connected to injectors. Support rail to prevent damage to injector seals.Torque specFuel Rail Bolts19 Nm (14 lb-ft)
- 5Disconnect fuel return lineLocate the fuel return line connected to the fuel pressure regulator. Using the appropriate disconnect tool, release the quick-connect fitting and separate the return line from the regulator. Cover the open line with a shop towel.
- 6Remove fuel pressure regulator mounting screwsRemove the two mounting screws securing the fuel pressure regulator to the fuel rail. Note the orientation of the regulator for proper installation of the replacement unit.Torque specRegulator Mounting Screws5 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 7Remove fuel pressure regulatorCarefully pull the fuel pressure regulator straight out from the fuel rail. Remove and discard the old O-ring from the regulator bore in the fuel rail. Inspect the fuel rail bore for any debris, corrosion, or damage.
- 8Install new fuel pressure regulatorLubricate the new O-ring with clean engine oil and install it into the fuel rail bore. Ensure the O-ring is properly seated in the groove. Install the new fuel pressure regulator, ensuring correct orientation matches the original. Press firmly until fully seated.⚠Do not use petroleum jelly or grease on O-ring. Use only clean engine oil for lubrication.
- 9Secure regulator mounting screwsInstall the two regulator mounting screws and tighten in a criss-cross pattern to the specified torque. Do not overtighten as this can damage the regulator housing.Torque specRegulator Mounting Screws5 Nm (4 lb-ft)
- 10Reconnect fuel return lineConnect the fuel return line to the fuel pressure regulator. Push the quick-connect fitting straight onto the regulator port until it clicks into place. Gently tug on the line to verify it is locked.
- 11Reinstall fuel rail assemblyCarefully lower the fuel rail assembly back into position, ensuring all injectors are properly aligned with their bores. Install the two fuel rail mounting bolts and tighten to specification in a criss-cross pattern.Torque specFuel Rail Bolts19 Nm (14 lb-ft)
- 12Reconnect electrical connectionsReconnect the fuel pressure regulator electrical connector. Reconnect all four fuel injector electrical connectors, ensuring each clicks securely into place.
- 13Reconnect fuel feed lineInstall new sealing washers on the fuel feed line if applicable. Connect the fuel feed line to the fuel rail, pushing the quick-connect fitting straight on until it clicks. Verify the connection is secure by gently pulling on the line.
- 14Prime fuel system and check for leaksReconnect the negative battery terminal. Turn the ignition to ON position (do not start) for 2 seconds, then OFF. Repeat this cycle 3-4 times to prime the fuel system. Carefully inspect all fuel connections for leaks. Wipe away any spilled fuel before proceeding.⚠️Do not start engine if any fuel leaks are detected. Repair leaks before proceeding.
Reassembly
- Reinstall engine cover by aligning rear tabs first, then pressing down front clips until they click
- Remove absorbent pads and drip pan from work area
- Dispose of fuel-soaked materials in approved container away from work area
Verification
- Start engine and allow it to idle for 2 minutes while monitoring for fuel leaks at all disturbed connections
- Check for proper engine idle quality and absence of rough running or misfires
- Verify no fuel odor is present in engine compartment
- Perform a test drive and confirm normal acceleration and no hesitation under load
- Re-inspect all fuel connections after test drive for any seepage or wet spots
- Verify no diagnostic trouble codes are present using an OBD-II scanner
