Replace a single hydraulic valve lifter on the 2016-2021 Honda Civic 1.5L turbo engine by removing the valve cover, camshaft, and rocker arm assembly to access the lifter.

Warnings

⚠️SAFETY-CRITICAL: Incorrect valve train assembly or torque specifications can cause catastrophic engine failure, valve-to-piston contact, and severe engine damage. If any step is unclear, seek professional service.
⚠️Engine must be completely cold before starting. Hot components can cause severe burns.
⚠️Camshaft timing must be maintained precisely. Do not rotate crankshaft or camshaft independently once timing chain is loose.
Keep all valve train components in exact order if removing multiple parts. Mixing positions can cause premature wear or failure.
Use only genuine Honda lifters. Aftermarket parts may have different specifications causing noise or damage.
ℹ️This procedure requires engine oil change. Plan accordingly.

Preparation

  1. Ensure engine is completely cold (minimum 2 hours after last operation)
  2. Disconnect negative battery cable and wait 3 minutes for system discharge
  3. Remove engine cover by pulling upward on clip points
  4. Remove air intake duct and air filter housing assembly
  5. Drain engine oil completely and reinstall drain plug
  6. Support engine from above using engine support bar or hoist with load leveler
  7. Remove right side engine mount to allow engine tilting for access
  8. Label and photograph all vacuum lines and electrical connections before removal
  9. Position vehicle on level surface with parking brake engaged and wheel chocks in place

Procedure

  1. 1
Remove ignition coils and spark plugs
Disconnect all four ignition coil electrical connectors. Remove the ignition coil mounting bolts and pull coils straight out. Remove all four spark plugs using a 16mm spark plug socket. Keep components organized by cylinder position.
  2. 2
    Remove valve cover assembly
Disconnect PCV hose and breather hose from valve cover. Remove all valve cover bolts in reverse of tightening sequence (start from outside, work inward). Carefully lift valve cover off, tapping gently with rubber mallet if stuck. Inspect gasket mating surfaces for damage.
Do not pry between valve cover and cylinder head as this will damage sealing surfaces.
    Torque spec
    Cover Bolts15 Nm (11 lb-ft)
  3. 3
Rotate engine to TDC cylinder #1
Remove the rubber access plug from the timing chain cover. Rotate crankshaft clockwise using 19mm socket on crankshaft pulley bolt until the UP mark on the camshaft sprocket aligns with the cylinder head mating surface and timing marks align. Verify piston #1 is at top dead center compression stroke.
⚠️Always rotate engine in normal direction of rotation (clockwise from front). Never rotate counterclockwise.
  4. 4
Secure camshaft timing and remove camshaft sprocket
Mark the timing chain to camshaft sprocket relationship with paint pen. Install cam holding tool or secure camshaft sprocket to timing chain using zip ties to prevent timing loss. Remove camshaft sprocket bolt (while preventing camshaft rotation). Carefully slide sprocket forward keeping chain engaged, support with wire.
⚠️Timing chain must remain engaged with crankshaft sprocket. Do not allow chain to fall into timing cover or timing will be lost.
  5. 5
Remove camshaft and rocker arm assembly
Loosen rocker arm shaft bolts in reverse sequence (outside to inside) in 2-3 progressive steps to prevent warping. Remove bolts completely and carefully lift rocker arm shaft assembly with camshaft as a single unit. Place on clean workspace maintaining component orientation. Note which lifter is being replaced and its position.
Rocker shaft assembly bolts must be loosened gradually and evenly. Sudden release can warp shaft or damage rocker arms.
    Torque spec
    Rocker Arm Shaft Bolts25 Nm (18 lb-ft)
  6. 6
Remove and inspect rocker arms and lifters
Remove rocker arms from shaft if needed to access lifter position. The lifter sits in the cylinder head bore beneath the rocker arm. Use magnet or pick tool to carefully extract the failed lifter from its bore. Inspect bore for scoring, debris, or damage. Inspect camshaft lobes for wear or scoring at the affected position.
If camshaft shows wear or scoring, it must be replaced. Do not install new lifter on worn cam lobe.
  7. 7
    Install new lifter
Clean lifter bore thoroughly with lint-free cloth and brake cleaner. Coat new lifter exterior with fresh 0W-20 engine oil. Ensure lifter internal check valve moves freely by pressing plunger - it should have slight spring resistance. Install lifter into bore ensuring it seats fully and sits flat. Rotate lifter to verify free movement in bore.
New lifter must be primed with oil and plunger must move freely. A stuck lifter will cause immediate damage.
  8. 8
Reinstall rocker arm and camshaft assembly
Lubricate all camshaft journals and lobes with fresh engine oil. Position rocker arm shaft assembly with camshaft back onto cylinder head, ensuring rocker arms align with valve stems and lifters. Verify camshaft journal alignment. Install rocker arm shaft bolts finger-tight initially. Tighten bolts in proper sequence (center outward) evenly in 2-3 progressive steps to final torque specification.
⚠️Rocker shaft bolts MUST be tightened in proper sequence and evenly. Improper tightening will warp shaft and cause valve train failure.
    Torque spec
    Rocker Arm Shaft Bolts25 Nm (18 lb-ft)
  9. 9
Reinstall camshaft sprocket and verify timing
Clean camshaft sprocket bolt threads and apply light engine oil. Position camshaft sprocket onto camshaft with timing marks aligned as marked previously. Install and tighten sprocket bolt to specification while holding camshaft. Remove cam holding tool or support ties. Rotate engine two complete revolutions clockwise and verify all timing marks realign at TDC.
⚠️Timing marks MUST align perfectly after two rotations. If not aligned, timing is incorrect and engine must not be started.
  10. 10
Install new valve cover gasket and reassemble
Clean cylinder head gasket surface thoroughly with plastic scraper and brake cleaner. Install new spark plug tube seals into valve cover. Position new gasket onto valve cover (not cylinder head). Apply small dab of RTV sealant at camshaft cap corners only. Place valve cover onto cylinder head and install bolts. Tighten valve cover bolts in proper sequence (inside outward) to specification.
Use minimal RTV sealant. Excess sealant can enter oil passages and cause engine damage.
    Torque spec
    Cover Bolts15 Nm (11 lb-ft)
  11. 11
Reinstall ignition system and engine mount
Install spark plugs to proper torque (do not over-tighten into aluminum head). Install ignition coils and tighten mounting bolts. Reconnect all ignition coil connectors. Reinstall right engine mount and remove engine support. Reinstall air intake system and engine cover. Reconnect battery negative cable.

Reassembly

  1. Fill engine with 4.0 quarts of Honda Genuine 0W-20 engine oil
  2. Before starting engine, remove all spark plugs and crank engine for 10 seconds to prime oil system and lifters
  3. Reinstall spark plugs and ignition coils
  4. Start engine and immediately verify oil pressure light extinguishes within 2-3 seconds
  5. Allow engine to idle for 5 minutes listening for abnormal valve train noise
  6. If ticking persists beyond 5 minutes, shut down and reinspect lifter installation
  7. Check for oil leaks around valve cover gasket while engine is running

Verification

  • Engine should idle smoothly without valve train ticking or knocking noises after initial lifter break-in period (up to 5 minutes)
  • No oil leaks present around valve cover perimeter or camshaft seal
  • Engine oil level is correct on dipstick after running and settling
  • Check engine light does not illuminate (no timing-related fault codes)
  • Test drive vehicle and verify normal engine operation under load with no abnormal noises
  • Recheck valve cover bolt torque after engine reaches operating temperature and cools (gasket settling)
  • Monitor oil consumption over next 500 miles to ensure proper lifter sealing
