Power Seat Motor

This procedure covers the removal and replacement of a power seat motor on a 2016-2021 Honda Civic with the 1.5L turbo engine, including seat access and electrical disconnection.

Preparation

1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
2. Move the seat to be serviced to the full forward position for easier access to rear mounting bolts
3. Open driver or passenger door fully and secure in open position
4. Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait minimum 3 minutes for airbag system discharge
5. Gather all tools and new power seat motor assembly

Procedure

   Disconnect seat electrical connectors
   Locate the main seat wiring harness connectors under the front center of the seat. Press the release tab and disconnect all electrical connectors (typically 2-4 connectors depending on seat features). Note connector positions or take photos for reassembly reference.

   Remove front seat mounting bolts
   Using a 14mm socket, remove the two front seat mounting bolts. These are located at the front of each seat rail. Keep bolts organized for reinstallation.
   ℹ️Front bolts may have threadlocker applied from factory.

   Remove rear seat mounting bolts
   Slide the seat fully rearward to access the rear mounting bolts. Using a 14mm socket, remove the two rear seat mounting bolts located at the rear of each seat rail.

   Remove seat from vehicle
   Carefully tilt the seat backward and lift it out of the vehicle. The seat weighs approximately 60-80 lbs. Set the seat upside down on a protected work surface with the seat rails facing upward. Use blankets or cardboard to protect both the seat and work surface.

   Remove seat track covers
   Using trim panel tools, carefully pry off the plastic covers that protect the seat track mechanisms. These covers snap into place and may have small retaining clips. Work slowly to avoid breaking the clips.

   Locate and identify failed motor
   Identify which motor has failed: the horizontal motor (fore/aft movement), vertical motor (height adjustment), or recline motor. The motors are typically mounted to the seat frame with 2-3 bolts each and have a gear drive connection to the seat mechanism. Trace the wiring from the motor to ensure you have identified the correct unit.

   Disconnect motor electrical connector
   Press the release tab on the individual motor connector and disconnect it. If the connector is corroded or difficult to remove, apply electrical contact cleaner and gently work the connector free. Do not pull on wires.

   Remove motor mounting bolts
   Using a 10mm socket, remove the motor mounting bolts (typically 2-3 bolts). Note the orientation of the motor and any alignment features before removal. The motor gear must properly mesh with the seat mechanism drive gear.
   ⚠Do not rotate the seat mechanism manually while motor is removed as this may cause the gears to bind during reassembly.

   Remove failed motor from seat frame
   Carefully pull the motor away from the seat mechanism. The motor gear will disengage from the drive mechanism. Inspect the mounting area and gear teeth for damage or excessive wear.

    Prepare and install new motor
    Compare the new motor to the old unit to ensure correct replacement. Clean the mounting surface with a wire brush if necessary. Align the motor gear with the seat mechanism drive gear and carefully position the new motor into place. Ensure the gear teeth mesh properly before attempting to install mounting bolts.

    Install motor mounting bolts
    Install the motor mounting bolts and tighten in a crossing pattern to ensure even seating. Torque the mounting bolts to specification using a torque wrench. Verify the motor is securely mounted and the gear engagement is correct by manually checking for any play or misalignment.

    Reconnect motor electrical connector
    Reconnect the electrical connector to the new motor. Ensure the connector locks into place with an audible click. Verify the connection is secure by gently tugging on the connector housing (not the wires).

    Reinstall seat track covers
    Snap the seat track covers back into place. Ensure all retaining clips are properly engaged and the covers are flush with the seat frame.

    Reinstall seat into vehicle
    Carefully lift the seat and position it back into the vehicle. Align the seat mounting holes with the floor mounting points. You may need to slide the seat mechanism to align the front and rear mounting points.

    Install seat mounting bolts
    Install all four seat mounting bolts (two front, two rear). Start all bolts by hand first to ensure proper threading. Torque the mounting bolts to the higher specification (32.0 Nm/24 lb-ft) using a crossing pattern (front left, rear right, front right, rear left) to ensure even seat mounting.
    ⚠Proper torque on seat mounting bolts is critical for crash safety. Use a calibrated torque wrench.

    Reconnect seat electrical connectors
    Reconnect all seat electrical connectors under the seat. Ensure each connector clicks into place securely. Route wiring away from moving seat components and pinch points.

    Reconnect battery and test operation
    Reconnect the negative battery terminal and torque to specification. Turn the ignition to ON position (engine off). Test all seat motor functions: forward/back movement, height adjustment, and recline operation. Verify the repaired function operates smoothly through full range of motion without binding or unusual noise.

Reassembly

1. Ensure all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
2. Verify all seat mounting bolts are torqued to the critical 32.0 Nm specification
3. Confirm no tools or parts are left in the vehicle
4. Check that seat track covers are properly installed and secure

Verification

• Test all power seat functions with ignition ON: verify forward/back, height adjustment, and recline all operate smoothly
• Check for any unusual noises during seat operation that might indicate gear misalignment
• Verify seat is solidly mounted with no movement or play at mounting points
• Confirm no warning lights on instrument cluster related to airbag or seat systems
• If vehicle has memory seat function, verify memory settings can be stored and recalled properly
