Replace the front turn signal bulb in a 2016-2021 Honda Civic 1.5L Turbo by accessing the bulb housing from the engine bay.

Warnings

Allow the bulb to cool for at least 5 minutes if the vehicle has been running recently to avoid burns
ℹ️Avoid touching the glass portion of new halogen bulbs with bare hands as oils can cause premature failure

Preparation

  1. Ensure the ignition is off and the headlight switch is in the OFF position
  2. Open the hood and secure it with the prop rod
  3. Identify which side requires bulb replacement (driver or passenger)

Procedure

  1. 1
Locate the turn signal bulb housing
From the engine bay, locate the turn signal bulb housing on the back of the headlight assembly. The turn signal is positioned at the outer corner of the headlight assembly, typically below the main headlight bulb. The socket is a cylindrical gray or black connector with a wiring harness attached.
  2. 2
    Disconnect the electrical connector
Press the release tab on the electrical connector and pull it straight off the bulb socket. You may need to rock it gently while pulling. Set the connector aside where it won't be damaged.
  3. 3
    Remove the bulb socket
Rotate the bulb socket counterclockwise approximately 1/4 turn (90 degrees) until it releases from the headlight housing. Pull the socket straight out from the housing. The socket and bulb will come out as one assembly.
  4. 4
    Remove the old bulb
The 7440A bulb is a wedge-type bulb. Grasp the bulb firmly and pull it straight out of the socket. It should release with moderate force. If the bulb is stuck, gently wiggle it side to side while pulling. Inspect the socket for any corrosion or damage.
  5. 5
    Install the new bulb
Using a clean shop towel or cloth to avoid touching the glass, align the new 7440A amber bulb with the socket and push it in firmly until it seats completely. The bulb should be fully inserted with no gap between the bulb base and socket.
  6. 6
    Reinstall the socket assembly
Insert the bulb socket back into the headlight housing, ensuring proper alignment of the tabs. Rotate the socket clockwise 1/4 turn until it locks into place. You should feel and hear a positive click when properly seated.
  7. 7
    Reconnect the electrical connector
Push the electrical connector firmly onto the bulb socket until the release tab clicks into place. Ensure the connection is secure by gently tugging on the connector.

Reassembly

  1. No disassembly was required beyond the bulb socket removal

Verification

  • Turn the ignition to the ON position without starting the engine
  • Activate the turn signal for the side you replaced and verify the front turn signal flashes at a normal rate (approximately 60-90 flashes per minute)
  • Turn on the hazard lights and confirm both front turn signals flash properly
  • Visually inspect that the turn signal is amber in color and adequately bright
  • If the turn signal flashes rapidly (hyper-flash), verify the correct bulb type was installed and the bulb is fully seated
