Complete 100,000 mile maintenance service including engine oil change, transmission fluid change, coolant replacement, spark plug replacement, air filter replacement, and brake fluid flush for the 2016-2021 Honda Civic 1.5L turbo.

Warnings

⚠️Engine and coolant system must be completely cold before draining coolant to avoid severe burns.
⚠️Never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Always use jack stands rated for the vehicle weight.
The turbocharger and exhaust manifold remain extremely hot for 30+ minutes after engine shutdown. Allow adequate cooling time before working near these components.
ATF must be at correct temperature (95-113°F) for accurate fill level. Overfilling can damage the transmission.
ℹ️Use only Honda Type 2 coolant. Mixing coolant types can cause corrosion and cooling system damage.
ℹ️This vehicle uses a CVT transmission. The fill procedure differs from conventional automatic transmissions.

  • Honda DW-1 ATF — 3 qt
  • Honda Type 2 Coolant (Blue) — 6 qt
  • DOT 3 Brake Fluid — 1 qt

Preparation

  1. Park vehicle on level surface and engage parking brake
  2. Allow engine to cool completely (minimum 2 hours) before beginning work
  3. Gather all fluids, filters, and tools before starting
  4. Raise vehicle and support securely on jack stands at all four corners
  5. Remove engine cover by pulling upward on front edge then lifting away
  6. Remove front wheels for easier access to brake calipers during brake fluid service

Procedure

  1. 1
Drain engine oil and replace filter
Place drain pan under oil pan. Remove oil drain plug with 17mm socket and allow oil to drain completely (approximately 10 minutes). While draining, remove oil filter located on driver side of engine block using oil filter wrench. Install new oil filter hand-tight plus 3/4 turn. Install drain plug with NEW crush washer and torque to specification.
  2. 2
    Replace engine air filter
Open hood and locate air box on driver side of engine bay. Release air box clips (4 total) and lift top half of air box. Remove old air filter element and inspect air box for debris. Install new air filter with directional arrow pointing toward engine. Reinstall air box top and secure clips.
  3. 3
    Replace cabin air filter
Open glove box and remove contents. Press inward on both sides of glove box to release stoppers and lower completely. Remove cabin air filter cover by pressing tabs. Slide old cabin air filter out noting airflow direction arrow. Install new filter with arrow pointing down (toward floor). Reinstall cover and glove box.
  4. 4
    Replace spark plugs
Locate ignition coils on top of engine (4 total). Disconnect each coil electrical connector by pressing release tab. Remove mounting bolt from each coil using 10mm socket and pull coils straight up to remove. Use 16mm spark plug socket with extension to remove old plugs. Check gap on new plugs (should be 0.028-0.031 inches). Install new plugs hand-tight, then torque to 18-22 lb-ft (24-30 Nm). Reinstall ignition coils and torque mounting bolts.
Do not drop anything into spark plug tubes. Foreign objects can cause severe engine damage.
  5. 5
    Drain and refill transmission fluid
Locate CVT transmission drain plug on bottom of transmission (requires access from underneath). Place drain pan underneath and remove drain plug with 17mm socket. Allow fluid to drain completely (approximately 3 quarts will drain). Reinstall drain plug with torque specification. Remove transmission fill bolt on side of transmission case. Using funnel and tube, add 3 quarts of Honda DW-1 ATF through fill hole. Start engine and shift through all gear positions, holding each for 5 seconds. With engine idling and transmission in Park, check fluid level at fill hole - fluid should just begin to drip out. Add small amounts if needed. Reinstall fill bolt.
Transmission fluid must be checked at operating temperature (95-113°F). Use infrared thermometer on transmission case for accuracy.
  6. 6
    Drain cooling system
Ensure engine is completely cold. Place large drain pan under radiator. Locate radiator drain plug at bottom driver side of radiator and open to drain coolant. Remove radiator cap to speed draining. Once drained, close drain plug. Locate engine block drain bolt on rear of engine block (passenger side, below exhaust manifold) and remove to drain block. Reinstall block drain bolt hand-tight.
⚠️Coolant is toxic to animals and children. Dispose of used coolant properly at recycling center.
  7. 7
    Refill cooling system
Mix Honda Type 2 coolant 50/50 with distilled water (or use pre-mixed). Slowly fill cooling system through radiator neck until full. Install radiator cap. Fill coolant reservoir to MAX line. Start engine and allow to reach operating temperature with heater on maximum. Watch temperature gauge to ensure normal operation. Squeeze upper radiator hose several times to burp air from system. Check coolant level in reservoir and add if needed. After engine reaches operating temperature and cooling fan cycles on, turn off engine and allow to cool. Recheck coolant level when cold and top off reservoir to MAX line.
Air pockets in cooling system can cause overheating. Monitor temperature gauge closely during first drive cycle.
  8. 8
    Flush and bleed brake fluid
Check brake fluid reservoir level and top off with fresh DOT 3 fluid. Starting with passenger rear wheel, locate bleeder screw on brake caliper. Attach clear tube to bleeder and place other end in catch bottle. Have assistant pump brake pedal 3-4 times and hold. Open bleeder screw 1/2 turn while pedal is held down. Close bleeder before pedal reaches floor. Repeat until fluid runs clear with no air bubbles. Move to driver rear, then passenger front, then driver front, repeating process at each wheel. Frequently check and refill reservoir to prevent air introduction. Final fluid should be clear, not dark brown.
⚠️Never reuse brake fluid. Never allow reservoir to run empty during bleeding or entire process must be restarted.
  9. 9
    Refill engine oil
Lower vehicle to ground. Using funnel, add 3.5 quarts of Honda Genuine 0W-20 oil through oil filler cap on top of engine. Start engine and allow to run for 30 seconds, then shut off. Wait 2 minutes for oil to drain to pan. Check oil level with dipstick - should be between MIN and MAX marks. Add remaining oil in small increments until level reaches MAX mark. Do not overfill.
  10. 10
Reinstall wheels and perform final checks
Reinstall all four wheels, threading lug nuts by hand initially. Using torque wrench, tighten lug nuts in star pattern to specification. Lower vehicle completely to ground. Reinstall engine cover by positioning rear tabs first, then pressing down on front until clips engage. Check underneath vehicle for any fluid leaks from drain plugs or filter. Verify all electrical connectors are secured.

Reassembly

  1. Double-check all drain plugs are properly torqued and not leaking
  2. Verify engine cover is fully seated and secured
  3. Confirm all tools and parts have been removed from engine bay
  4. Reset maintenance reminder in vehicle information display if equipped

Verification

  • Start engine and verify no warning lights on dashboard
  • Check for leaks under vehicle after engine reaches operating temperature
  • Verify oil pressure gauge shows normal reading within 10 seconds of startup
  • Test drive vehicle and verify smooth operation, no unusual noises, and normal temperature gauge reading
  • Recheck all fluid levels after test drive and top off as needed
  • Inspect work area for any drips or leaks 24 hours after service
  • Monitor coolant level in reservoir over next few days and top off if needed as air purges from system
