🔧Does this apply to your car? Most transmission control modules must be programmed and have adaptations relearned after replacement — and on some vehicles (many Mercedes 722.9, ZF mechatronic units) the TCM lives INSIDE the transmission, which changes this from a 1-hour job to a 4-8 hour job. Verify your TCM location before quoting.
✓Expert-verified. Personally reviewed and approved by OLP's master technicians (Chris Hackleman — 20+ years each). Always follow the vehicle's factory service information and torque specs.
This procedure covers the replacement of the Transmission Control Module (TCM) on the 2016-2021 Honda Civic with the 1.5L turbocharged engine and CVT transmission.
Warnings
⚠The TCM must be programmed to the vehicle using Honda Diagnostic System (HDS) or compatible scan tool after installation. Failure to program will result in transmission malfunctions.
⚠Do not disconnect the battery or TCM connector with the ignition on, as this may corrupt stored data or damage electronic components.
ℹ️The TCM is located on the transmission case. Some transmission fluid may drip when removing the module cover.

Preparation
- Park vehicle on level ground and engage parking brake
- Turn ignition off and remove key
- Disconnect negative battery terminal and wait at least 3 minutes before proceeding
- Allow transmission to cool if vehicle was recently driven
- Raise and safely support the front of the vehicle on jack stands
- Remove engine undercover to access transmission from below
Procedure
- 1Locate the TCMFrom underneath the vehicle, locate the TCM on the driver's side of the transmission case. The TCM is a rectangular aluminum unit with an electrical connector and is secured by a cover with multiple bolts.
- 2Disconnect the TCM electrical connectorPress the locking tab on the TCM electrical connector and carefully pull the connector away from the module. Wiggle gently if needed but do not force. The connector may be secured with a secondary lock or clip that must be released first.
- 3Remove the TCM cover boltsUsing a 10mm socket, remove the bolts securing the TCM cover to the transmission case. There are typically 4-6 bolts around the perimeter. Keep track of bolt locations as some may be different lengths.Torque specCover Screws10 Nm (8 lb-ft)
- 4Remove the TCM coverCarefully pull the cover away from the transmission case. A small amount of transmission fluid may be present behind the cover. Have a shop towel ready to catch any drips. Inspect the gasket or O-ring seal on the cover.
- 5Remove the TCM mounting boltsUsing a 10mm socket, remove the bolts securing the TCM to the transmission case. The TCM is typically held by 2-3 bolts. Note the bolt positions for reinstallation.Torque specSensor Bolts10 Nm (8 lb-ft)
- 6Extract the TCM from the transmissionCarefully pull the TCM straight out from the transmission case. The module may have O-rings or seals that create resistance. Do not pry or use excessive force. Wiggle gently while pulling if needed.
- 7Inspect and clean the mounting surfaceClean the TCM mounting surface on the transmission case with a clean shop towel. Remove any old gasket material or debris. Inspect for damage or cracks. Check the condition of any O-rings or seals.
- 8Install the new TCMEnsure any O-rings or seals are properly positioned on the new TCM. Carefully insert the TCM into the transmission case, aligning it with the mounting holes. Push firmly but gently until fully seated. Do not force.
- 9Install the TCM mounting boltsInstall the TCM mounting bolts and tighten to specification using a torque wrench. Tighten evenly in a criss-cross pattern to ensure proper seating.Torque specSensor Bolts10 Nm (8 lb-ft)
- 10Reinstall the TCM coverInstall a new gasket or O-ring seal on the cover if damaged or worn. Position the cover over the TCM and install all bolts hand-tight first. Then torque bolts to specification in a criss-cross pattern to ensure even sealing.Torque specCover Screws10 Nm (8 lb-ft)
- 11Reconnect the TCM electrical connectorAlign the electrical connector with the TCM and push firmly until it clicks into place. Ensure the locking tab engages fully and any secondary locks are secured.
- 12Reinstall undercover and lower vehicleReinstall the engine undercover and any removed splash shields. Carefully lower the vehicle from jack stands. Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
- 13Program the TCMConnect the Honda Diagnostic System (HDS) or compatible professional scan tool. Turn ignition to ON position (do not start engine). Follow the scan tool prompts to program the new TCM to the vehicle. This process typically takes 10-20 minutes and requires stable battery voltage.
Reassembly
- Ensure all electrical connectors are fully seated and locked
- Verify all undercovers and shields are properly secured
- Double-check that all bolts are torqued to specification
Verification
- With the scan tool still connected, verify no DTCs are present after TCM programming is complete
- Start the engine and verify it shifts into gear smoothly (D, R, P positions)
- Test drive the vehicle through all gears and verify smooth shifting with no warning lights
- Recheck for transmission fluid leaks around the TCM area after test drive
- Use scan tool to verify TCM communication and proper transmission temperature readings
